  • A Nobel Laureate and distinguished physicist, Chu is credited with developing new methods to cool and trap atoms with laser lights. This groundbreaking scientific research uses advanced optical technology and has implications not only for physics, but also for biology. Presented as part of the Hitchcock Lecture series at UC Berkeley.

Origin of life and its evolution are the result of action of laws of hierarchical thermodynamics.
Thermodynamics investigates systems which can be characterized by state functions. The separation of biological systems into individual hierarchies of structures allows us to study the processes in them independently of the processes that take place in other hierarchical structures.

This lecture is far too dense for a regular youtube audience. You would have to read a large book on nucleic acid chemistry before you could follow the material. The subject at the end might be better suited for an interview that lasts around 8 minutes.
Oh, and by the way, the speaker here is the Secretary of Energy within the Obama administration.

I know this is an audience of physicists, but you'd think that at some point in their careers (probably even in their undergrad years) they took some biology classes and at least know what an enzyme is.
Then again, maybe he's addressing people with no biology knowledge at all. :/
