  • I picked up a 2003 model Weber Genesis Silver B gas grill for a real bargain from a friend who had replaced it with another grill. I decided to completely gut it, fix it up, replace some parts and get it back to like new grilling condition. I bought a lot of new Weber replacement parts and went to work cleaning and restoring this grill. I think this is a testament to Weber quality. The grill was structurally sound and all it took was some elbow grease and determination to bring her back to life. I also found it to be awesome that Weber still has parts available for a 10-year old gas grill. I was also able to download the users manual and some parts replacement guides from Weber's website.
    Serial Number: DT0707465
    Model: 2250000
    I'm glad I recorded these numbers... when I was cleaning the grill cart, the numbers came off the stickers. I should have thought about that before I started but no worries... This grill is going to live here at the Man Cave!

    My Genesis silver is 20 years old and, still works fantastic. I was fortunate that the guy I bought it from took very good care of things. $100 for a 20 year old Weber that will probably outlast a brand new $400 grill can't beat it with a stick!!! Love my new to me grill!!!

    I just picked up one of these free in terrible condition. Must've been sitting outdoors for years untouched. I'm going to rip it apart, power wash it bare, hit it with hi-temp paint, and replace the burners, lines, and ignition.
    I think it'll be worth the effort given how great everyone says these are. Still will be cheaper than buying something new that won't last.

    • @stevem4783
      @stevem4783 Před 2 měsíci +1

      After cleaning it up it's not in bad shape at all. The plastics are mint and there's no critical rust damage, only minor surface stuff on replaceable parts. The red paint on the lid is in good condition, the blacks need to be redone but that's easy.
      It's going to be a nice cooker once I get the internals replaced. I think it'll take roughly $150 for some aftermarket burners, ignition, and new grates all around, a couple bucks for some high temp paint, that's all. Maybe a new thermometer too.
      I see now why people love these and paid a premium for them. A day's work will have it in almost new condition and it's over 20 years old.

    Great video, thanks for posting. I have had my Genesis since 2001 - 16 years going strong. I'm on the third set of flavouriser bars and third set of grills. I've just put in 18 gauge stainless bars and the solid rod stainless grills. If it ever dies, I'll definitely buy another Weber. The customer service is fantastic, and no problems with parts supply. They just gave me a free igniter too.

    I purchased my Weber Genius Silver in the fall of 1999. It was on sale because it was a discontinued style for that model. Today is September of 2022 and it’s still running strong. I replaced the grills to the stainless about 5 years ago and a tune up this month with a new striker kit and a new regulator and hose between the bottle and the gas distribution manifold. I will never have another brand of gas grill other than Weber. When I brought it home in 1999 in the back of my pickup turned sideways to the cab, going down the interstate it took a tumble falling and destroying one of the fold out tables (I’ve got fold up tables on left and right side). I called Weber service and explained what had happened and it was unused brand new. They sent it to me for free just pay for shipping. Fantastic service. The big box stores used to have a wide verity of replacement parts but no more, just accessories. Went to a True Value and found all of the Weber original parts I needed on this last service. The Web has an fantastic supply of factory original parts but I did not have to order what I needed.

    I have the Weber Genesis Silver B that I bought in the early spring of 2002 (it could be a 2001 model). This is the 17th year of service for this grill. The cover eventually rotted and fell apart. I didn't bother replacing it since I mistakenly thought, at that point, that the grill was probably on borrowed time. So, the grill sat outside unprotected, in four seasons of weather, for probably 5 years. Two years ago the burners finally rotted to the point where only the front burner would light. I decided to replace the burners and the igniter switch. I searched CZcams, and the internet in general, to see what was involved. It was then that I discovered dozens of Weber owners who had gas grills that were 18, 20, or 23 years old and were still going strong! You mean it's NORMAL for these to last this long LOL? Long and short, I replaced the burners and igniter, cleaned up the grill, and for a total cost of around $55 and a few hours of work I got what amounted to a brand new Weber grill. Of course, I bought a new cover too.

    My dad inherited my grandfathers genesis 1000 with the wood slats. He’s now passed it down to me and today I took a chance and found one of these genesis silvers for 40 dollars. The cleanest bbq I’ve ever seen for its age. I was planning on doing a full restore of the OG bbq but everything is easily converted. Even the side pannels were able to be thrown on to the originals red lid. I couldn’t be happier with this bbq. I will probably end up switching out the plastic for the wooden pieces, it really adds to the look, even though the plastics more practical

    My Weber turned 25 this year. Finally had to put in new burners. Did put in new porcelain bars, 3rd set, went with the cast iron grates instead of stainless. Did my 3rd igniter last year. Also installed my 2nd regulator this year. I got the parts direct from Weber. The customer service people were great in helping get the correct parts and delivery was spot on. There are some rust spots starting to show up on the cart I will have to take care of those in the near future. Otherwise she runs like brand new. I grill about 4 times a week. $232 for parts sure beats $700 for a new grill or $400 for a new Q model. Your video was really good. Thank you.

    I would really like to see HOW you do this stuff. HOW do you paint the bottom of the aluminum box? Do you sand it first? Prime it? Use spray paint or brush on? HOW do you paint the aluminum ends of the grill lid - do you mask off the enamel part? For places that have rust, HOW do you treat it? HOW did you clean out and test the burner tubes? Thank you for making the video, and thanks for all your Man Cave Meals. It's a lot of work making these videos - I'd just like to see more "how to" for those of us who are beginners.

    I restored my dad's mid-1980s Weber grill. Just a two-burner grill, 15 inches deep and 22 inches wide. The red finish still looks awesome. I replaced the flavoizors, grill grates and propane tube and tanks 4 years ago, but had to replace the grill grate again this year. However, Weber now offers enamel-covered cast iron grill grates, which is a step up compared to the stamped metal enameled grills that came with it originally.

    We also bought this in late 2003, after reading about its highest rating in a consumer magazine. The BEST grill we ever had, and it was still going strong when we moved to another state and had to leave it behind. The company honored their 10-year guarantee too, and the only replacement we needed was the fold-down table. It had a small crack in it from new. Love the Weber company--would never hesitate to purchase another from this company.

    I have the same Weber Genesis Silver B... it's 23 1/2 years old! and still working... this thing doesn't owe me anything... lives outdoors 365 days a year... usually gets one good cleaning per year... I haven't bothered with a cover for the last 6 years or so as they are more trouble than they're worth... original flavorizer bars, twisted and deformed but functional... I upgraded to solid stainless rod grates about 8 or 9 years ago... the best thing about this model is the non-metal end tables with fold up extensions... As I have less space now I expect to shift to a Fuego Element soon.

    I am the original owner of a 2000 Weber Genesis Silver B-NG and have rebuilt it twice. It works great, gets up to 650 degrees and looks like new. The porcelain lid has a 25 year replacement warranty. So if you are the original owner and there is any sign of rust they will replace it for free. The cast aluminum firebox actually has a lifetime warranty. You used to be able to buy original parts directly from Weber to replace rusted out frame parts. Since Weber switched to a new design a few years back those factory frame parts aren't available anymore which means you need to be on the lookout for rust. You can easily get 25 or more years out of one of these grills if you keep them covered and replace parts as they age. Why not just buy a new BBQ? Good question...I like rebuilding them and the old ones work better than the new ones which is true of so many things these days. Happy Grilling!

    Nice job. I just acquired my Mom’s Weber Genesis Silver. Parked unused in a garage for 7 years all it needed was a little bit of cleaning. This version only has 2 Burners but has all five flavor bars. I think you could go all in with the 5 pack replacements rather than just the 3 over the burners.

    • @this_is_steve
      @this_is_steve Před 2 lety +1

      That's right, you need 5 all (or more in other models). They are flavorizer bars, not heat shields. The purpose is when the juices drip they hit the sizzling hot bars and evaporate back up to the meat for extra flavor.

They use stainless steel bars on the Weber Gold series. They didn't cost much more than steel. Hoping I'll never have to deal with them rotting out ever again. I do think it's time to look at my burner tubes though.

    A few more tips for those keeping these old gals running for another 20 years -
    1. Amazon has many aftermarket parts for these that are specific to Weber but cheaper than Weber. If the grill is old anyway, I 'd go for it, especially the easy to build parts like flavorizer bars.
    2. Put the nasty stuff in a self-cleaning oven
    3. Think about the parts you NEED to operate and stock up on those now. You don't need the auto-ignitor or thermometer for example
    4. Certain parts continue to be available because they also fit Weber Spirit. I'm thinking flavorizer bars and grates - not sure about other stuff
    5. You can always cut down a longer flavorizer bar or cooking grate from a bigger grill
    6. Get some type of grill cover. I get the 75% off clearance ones at Home Depot
    7. Get everything you can in stainless steel to cut down on rust
    8. You can always Home Depot the cotter pins and other hardware as necessary
    9. You can always put a can under it to catch the grease if you don't have the parts
    10. When the actual metal body of the grill rusts out, you need a new grill
    I have two Genesis Silver A's (the second was free). I plan to keep at least one going until 2040 or beyond. Best no-nonsense grills ever.

    @dman1391 Před 6 lety +3

    These older Weber grills are way better than that new 2017 line they came out with. Based on lots of reviews that new GS4 tapered burner system sucks, the temps don't get hot enough for searing. Also, they reverted back to that open cart design which sucks and allows wind to whip underneath your burner tubes affecting the temps. They have a closed design model but they jacked the prices up $400 which I don't agree with. I spent $150 replacing parts in my older 2007 Spirit, so glad I did!

    they're such a great Grill I've had one since 1996 and it's completely rusted and rotted away and unfortunately the burner controls don't work anymore to turn it up or down it just turns it on too high but I can still do things X takes anything that has to be done on high it works perfect everything is completely rusted so I can't touch anything because it'll disintegrate on me as far as the screws bolts and nuts go I have never once use to cover on this and I think it's last of this line because of the fact that I've never used to cover the cover seems to trap condensation inside these grills and Watson from the inside out much faster than if it's not covered I use my girl all year round in the middle of winter the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that the bottom is wide open the newer ones are all encased and if it's a windy day it blows a lot of the heat away very quickly if the bottom is exposed the way these are other than that best girl in the world

    The old burner tubes were stainless, in good condition and did not need to be replaced IMO. Weber parts are expensive and add up quick if you get a bunch! If you're gonna throw a bunch of (relatively) expensive parts at a grill when refurbishing, then you would have been better off just buying a really nice, barely used pre-owned grill or a new one, also IMHO. Everything except the flavorizers could be stripped of all grease/dirt/surface rust and re-seasoned and reused. I rehabbed the same grill, same condition and (other that A LOT of elbow grease) it only cost me one can of paint! Well, I had a few old (but stainless) flavorizers that I only needed to clean up and cut down 2" to reuse in the rehab unit. Lastly, if you're gonna throw all that money at a rehab grill why would you put same crappy enamel steel flavorizers back on rather than finding nice 16 ga. stainless ones?? Dumb.

      I don't remember how much I spent.. it's been over four years now but I am sure I spent less than $200. I could have spent even less but the stainless steel grates were a bit more expensive for the set. Whether it's worth the money is up to you. I spent well under half what a new comparable model would have cost... probably closer to 1/3 of that cost. The grill was in brand new condition functionally when I was done with it.

    "HOW do you paint the bottom of the aluminum box?" First, painting ANYTHING is 99% surface preparation, and 1% of actual painting. Scrape as much crud as you can with a metal scraper, inside and out. Wire wheel on a drill, or wire hand brush, to get about as much crud as you can. Sand down the rust spots the best you can. If you have access to a sandblaster, that would be ideal, but expensive and messy. Wipe the whole thing down with acetone or a good automotive engine degreaser. Rinse with water, wipe it off good, and let it fully dry. STOP! YOU MUST USE HIGH HEAT PAINT, OR SPECIAL GRILL SPRAY PAINT IN A CAN. DO NOT PAINT THE INSIDE OF THE FIREBOX. When that's done, one or maybe two coats from a rattle can should do it.

  • @pix4c

    • @johnberkowitz4467
      @johnberkowitz4467 Před 6 lety +3

      A 1200 degree flat black BBQ spray paint from Rust-oleum works great on the frame. I use the same paint, but in a can with a mini-roller for the outside of the firebox and the cast aluminum sides of the lid. The porcelain lid is guaranteed for 25 years if you are the original owner. The paint on the cast aluminum is warranted for only one. The mini roller makes it look like it just rolled out of the factory.

Once you have the Weber part number you may be able to find adequate third party replacement parts at a lot lower price on Amazon.
