    1.7L of oil isn't nominal. And with all the conditions listed where the engine may use "extra" oil, is just about all driving conditions that will be encountered in Australia.
    My V6 Prado with 306000km on it doesn't use oil...

      @@nunawadingtoyota8134 I’m not going off what John Cadogan says. I’m going off the modern history of the automobile. Modern cars never burnt oil until the recent chasing of parasitic losses became thing. Paying for 0.1 litres of extra fuel per hundred kilometres is well worth it IMO to not have to top the oil off every time you drive the car. I’m sure most people driving a Landcruiser would agree seeing as they aren’t exactly a fuel efficient vehicle to begin with.
      Also if manufacturers insist on chasing parasitic losses then it would be nice if A) they admitted that it will burn oil between services before people bought the car B) actually quantify it with a specific amount per 1000kms straight out of the blocks rather than some arbitrary range after they are caught out and C) built enough sump capacity into the vehicle that it can go between services without being topped back up.

    I recall when subaru went to low friction rings in an attempt to reduce fuel consumption. It did, and then, when you added the cost of tipping a litre of oil into the motor every 1000km itvprooved to be cheaper to have the vehicle using more fuel and less oil.

  • @davidlewington3324
    @davidlewington3324 Před rokem +1

    Thanks for the heads up on oil usage by the LC300 under various conditions.
    At first, this was alarming information to me, as like most non automotive engineers, engine oil usage is synonymous with engine problems or excessive wear. The latter being not something that would apply to a new engine.
    I researched the issue and *ironically* I was reassured by John Cadogan's Videos from 2017 and 2020 that are very reassuring as to the reasons that modern engines do use more oil than their forebears.
    The 2017 video refers to a Holden Colorado using 2L oil in between 15,000 k services. John explained why this was not a concern in light of change of engine designs to reduce internal friction, for which extra oil consumption was a consequence (unlike the old days) and that the extra costs in oil could be offset in fuel savings. John writes "it's not indicative of early wear or a defect unless the consumption rate increases substantially. It's kind of just how your engine rolls, frankly I don't believe it's that much of an imposition actually to tip in one liter of engine oil every six months which ordinary drivers is about seven and a half thousand kilometres especially since whatever the oils costing you you saved more money in fuel"
    The 2020 video echoes a similar tune referring to a 2.4L 4cyl Kia using 1L of oil in between 15,000 km services. John writes,"relax because you don't have a problem." John continues, " this is where oil consumption comes in...so you can increase the clearances between the valve stems and the valve guides in the head and this makes it easier for the valves to move up and down and the ring thing makes it easier for the pistons to move up and down but when you do that you open the door to increased oil consumption so it's a balancing act." and "a little bit of oil consumption and a liter every seven and a half thousand k's is hardly what i would call excessive. Just deal with it particularly if it does not get any worse if that consumption just stays the same every seven and a half thousand k's then just do what the owner's manual says dude ."
    So if understanding correctly and due to "backed off clearances", then for some 4 cyl modern cars, I L of oil usage every 7,500k is acceptable (2L in 15,000k), if not expected. By extrapolation then, perhaps for a 6 cyl car that equates to 1.5L oil top up per 7,500K? It's not entirely clear to me but the LC300 *might* use 1.7L of oil in between 10,000 k services.
    1.7L oil usage per 10,000k would appear fine IF the benchmark is 1.5L oil per 7,500k. Also, this might only be expected if say towing heavier loads on a regular basis etc.?
    John Cadogan, in his latest video addressing this topic in relation to the LC300, seems far more focused on disparaging Toyota and less reassuring that some engines use oil as a consequence of their design. Just my personal view but I do find that in John's videos, the signal to noise ratio does vary considerably which is why I have stopped regularly tuning in.
    That said, It appears that the quantum of oil usage may be the issue and so I would like to see some guidelines published by Toyota (if they do not already exist) as to what is acceptable oil consumption under average as well as "severe" conditions.
    It also concerns me that "servicing" requirements increase to every 5,000k/3 months under "severe" conditions. This now goes beyond topping up the oil and becomes a far more costly and time consuming exercise for LC300 owners.I assume the service involves replacing the oil?

      Hi,
      Thanks so much for getting in touch and the detailed comment. I do watch John's videos for the educational content but failed to see logic applied in the case of the LC300 Oil usage video.
      His past videos on oil consumption clearly confirm his views on what is normal oil usage and let's keep in mind that the additional 2 cylinders on the V6 will of course increase the overall oil consumption when referenced against a 4 cyl engine
      Toyota states that oil consumption should decrease by 30000km travelled. We are still trying to get some information on what that number may be. Please use the customer information notice as a guide as to what is acceptable during the break in period. Additional maintenance requirements are not new and apply to every model to ensure services are performed correctly based on usage conditions. LC300 owners have not been singled out in this instance and the type of service required will depend on time and the km's travelled.

    Hi Darek, thanks for sharing this, I'd been trying to get clarification on this topic for a long time, with no luck. What are your thoughts about how this could impact the DPF as the engine burns oil and then being expelled via the exaust into the DPF. In some cases have seen these engine use 4 litres or more in 7-10k kms? That's my main worry.

What are your thoughts if this could cause any longevity issues with exaust valves, DPF, etc. I'm being told it's just the way the 300's are. I also have a Prado with 1GD and no issues alike, and the 1GD is also modern diesel, so it doesn't make sense to me. Thanks 😊

      My experience with my 2019 Prado is slightly different. I use about 500ml of oil every 5000km and that is also how often I do the oil change. The reason for us making this video is that owners who may be concerned about oil usage on their LC300 can rest assured that oil consumption is part and parcel of engine operation. As the customer notice advises, the amount of oil usage will depend on the way the vehicle is being used and the engineering team have taken this into consideration when designing the complete package. At some point we need sit back and enjoy our vehicle with the full confidence that the engineering team knows what they are talking about

    If a brand new LC300 off the dealer is burning 30% of engine oil capacity per scheduled service interval, then we have problem. I suspect 0w-20 was being used for the vehicle, 0w-30 or 5w-30 would be more suitable. Engine Oil has chemicals in it that’s would eventually break down overtime, regardless if the vehicle is running or sitting there. Service a brand new vehicle 15,000km/12months is stupid, stick with the 10,000km/6months which ever comes firsts. Not bashing Toyota on this, but my father owns a GR LC300 that he bought from Nunawading Toyota as we know one of the salesman there for a long time. Oil consumption is not the issue, it’s the misconception that engines are not supposed to use oil and lack of understanding of why they do.

      @@nunawadingtoyota8134 no, oil consumption is the issue, my 400,000km 1hd powered cruiser uses a barely noticeable amount of oil between services
      It does 200km a day, 25% of the time it tows about 2 ton and when its not towing its doing 120-130km/hr
      This shouldn’t be a thing toyota needs to inform its customers about because it just shouldn’t happen especially for a minimum spend of $100k

    • @nunawadingtoyota8134
      @nunawadingtoyota8134  Před rokem +1

      1HD was and still is an awesome motor but in fairness we have moved on since then. 227kW and 700 Nm are impressive figures for a 3.3l engine. I think you’d agree that Toyota knows how to build engines. Toyota has issued this Customer information notice for owners that may be concerned about oil usage on their vehicles and explained the reasons for this. Not everyone may agree…

      @@nunawadingtoyota8134 I’m no fan of Cadogan, he’s a liar. I’ve watched Tojo’s customer service decent over 20 years and involved in a second court case with Toyota after the Hilux DPF attempted fraud. Toyota, it’s warranty and service department have exceeded any anecdotal poor reputation with published facts that expose the company, its products and its service staff as incompetent, negligent and even criminal in its business practices. With the expanding reach of the internet trading off an historical brand is quickly becoming redundant, Toyotas denial, deflections and are coming back to haunt them.
      Maybe Toyota should compensate customers for the R&D thats imposed on them.
