Many thanks, exactly what I needed to know, although the colour comparison would've been better served in another video for those of us coming just to find out how to get a Trådfri bulb to pair with a Hue Bridge.
It was monumentally inconvenient though, I was doing it for the GU10s in my kitchen, which is the only place in the whole house you can connect a GU10 to power, so I had to haul a powerline networking unit into the kitchen along with the Hue Bridge, find a longer ethernet cable and hold the bridge up in the air for a while to get it to pair with each of the four GU10s in turn. The first one refused to do it, so I tried the next and it worked straight away. Thought maybe I had mixed firmware versions. Tried the other two and they worked as well, so I went back to the first one... and that worked too!
So IKEA are definitely selling some white dimmable GU10 Trådfri lights in the UK with sufficiently recent firmware on. I bought these today.
You can also use a Hue dimmer or Lutron connected bulb (not Pico) remote to pair the bulb to the Hue hub. Then the bulb doesn't need to be near the hub. Just make sure the dimmer is already paired with the hub. Hold the dimmer near the bulb while pressing and holding the on button, and go through the pairing process. Then the bulb can be controlled with both the dimmer and the hub.
What, so all the fun I just had setting up my Hue Bridge in the kitchen was unnecessary? Aaaw man.
This worked perfectly first time! Thanks for uploading and your clear instructions! Subscribed!
Glad it worked! Welcome to Smarter Home Life! :-)
Do the ikea motion sensor, dimmer puck, and light switch work through the hue bridge on both ikea and hue bulbs?
Really good tutorial. Phillps and Ikea lights both working due to your guidence.👍
Great video and the configuration worked for. Great job and keep on!
This is a serious step in the right direction. Thanks for the update. A thorough and informative video as always. (That's a compliment btw, just to be clear... 😊) Quick question. Do you have any idea when Ikea will roll out homekit support? I've been tapping 'check for update' every hour since I updated my iPhone and old iPad mini to iOS 11. Can't wait to try it out.
Thanks! According to their PR team, the next big updates are coming in October. This will be the HomeKit/Alexa/Google Assistant software-based upgrade for their Gateway device, along with some other "surprises" that they wouldn't discuss further. We'll find out soon!
For Android you can use Hue Essential to issue a TouchLink command.
You don't have to mess with java on your computer to do it.
Very useful video thanks 👍🏻
Will the tradfri colour bulbs work with Hue Entertainment (light effects while watching movies or gaming)
how can you add the bulbs to homekit after doing this pairing process?
Looks like Amsterdam on the picture in the background! :)
Hi, Great video! 👍 Thinking of buying this... if I buy lightbulbs do I need the ikea gateway, the hue bridge, both or will either work? Thanks,
just needs a new device handler in smartthings, ikea bulbs aren't supported officially yet. no doubt someone on the forums will sort it out soon
Thanks for video. Have a new ikea bulb (clear one as you mentioned in video). I pass whole procces, bulb is blinkig 15 seconds and flash at the end, but finaly not added at hue app. I repeated process severel time, pair, unpair, but every time same... any idea what is a problem?
Great How-To thx
you're my hero, keep on doing what you do
Is there a workaround yet for the hue + tradfri + homekit "problem" i'd love to talk to my iphone again 😂
which hue bridge is necessary? V1 or v2 or do both work?
Only have V2 at this point, so couldn't test on V1.
How about the Trådfri Bestå LED light door? Can that be paired as well to the Hue bridge?
It's going to depend on the firmware, and the Bestå doors have been removed from IKEA's main smart lighting overview page - so I'm not sure what the status of those are right now.
So if I'd buy a tradfri bulb now I only have to get a hue bridge to get it running through hue? Or am I missing something?
+Edgar Wagt Nope, you’re correct. Some Tradfri bulbs at your store might have old firmware though, and might need to be updated via Tradfri gateway. You won’t know until you try pairing them to Hue.
Smarter Home Life thanks, you think I'll be good if I order them online?
hey you good video
Is it possible to use the color Trådfri Bulbs with Hue Sync (as ambience for watching TV) like I can doit with my Hue Light strips?
I have the Ikea system and I can't figure out how to add Phillips hue bulbs??????
Wow, Thanks. What is the IKEA Article Number for the color bulb?
Sure thing. Right now, the color bulb is so new that it is not yet listed on their site, but it is available in stores.
Hi. Superb video, thanks for all the info. What about Philips TV Ambilight? Will it work with IKEA bulbs via Hue Bridge 2.0? Thanks :)
+Pan Sidu Thx!! It might work. Generally, any light connected to the Hue bridge can usually do practically anything. Here’s some more info: www2.meethue.com/pt-br/support/ambilight-plus-hue/
Great video!
With the new Echo Plus, do you think, you can control ikea bulbs with the hue app, without having a hue bridge or ikea gateway?
Will test once the Echo Plus is available! :)
Cool! Looking forward to it!
Is Homekit now supported via a Philips Hue bridge with the new tradfri update for homekit?
Great video, very interesting!. One question, is there any way to pair an IKEA Bulb if you only have a Philips Hue Bridge (no IKEA controller present)? Thank you.
Thank you! By now, the firmware across the Tradfri bulbs found at IKEA stores should be updated so that what's mentioned in the video will work without doing needing to update the firmware. Just ensure the bulb is reset like the video mentions and the rest of the steps should work. Evidently, all of it can now be done in the Hue app itself without downloading the additional apps as shown in the video. But, in a worst case scenario, follow the video's instructions :)
If the firmware version of the bulb it's 1.2 or above, it will work. I bought some Gu10 bulbs yesterday and they were ok. If not, you can update them using the tradfri hub, but all of the bulbs were above 1.2 version.
Or you can just ask Ikea to update them....
Any chance you've tried to pair the motion controller from Ikea to the hue system yet? apparently it can be done but i'm struggling :(
@SmarterHomeLife 11:36 , has #Homekit integration changed?
I bought a Hue starter kit, (4 bulbs), and use it with HomeKit.
I would like to reduce costs by:
Adding IKEA's TRÅDFRI smart bulbs to Philips HUE, but I need it to be integrated with HomeKit. (Example: living room lights will be a mix of HUE/TRÅDFRI bulbs)
"Hey, siri, turn on Living Room lights".
The Hue Bridge (most likely) still restricts HomeKit control of Hue-only devices. But I no longer have the IKEA products and can't verify this.
I have managed to work with the philips bridge but I have not managed to appear in apple homkit
Can I use my ikes bridge with hue bulbs and Phillips app thanks
Would this work with GU10 bulbs and would then hue dimmer work with this
I need a bit of help. I've got a tradfri setup with the remote control, gateway and 8 dimmable (warm and bright whites) bulbs.
I now bought amazon echo plus (coming with its own hue hub)...How do I pair everything so that I can control everything from alexa ? I'm unable to find the devices through the standard alexa functionality.
I'm assuming you've added the IKEA skill for Alexa, right? Ensure the Tradfri hub is up-to-date with software updates and you've run Discovery with no luck? There is a specific setting to turn on Alexa functionality for Tradfri - specifically, I haven't used them together. Check out this article for some details: bigtechquestion.com/2017/11/01/smarthome/how-do-i-control-ikea-smart-lights-from-alexa/
Can you do this with the round gen 1 Hue bridge?
Do these work with Ambilight+Hue on Philips TV?
Not sure, but it's a good possibility because they can be part of Hue scenes and schedules/automations within the Hue app. Would say yes, but have no way to confirm it.

Thanks for the reply
Will report back if I test
Have you tried it yet? Its a deal breaker for me
Would also love to know about this...
The "Ambiance White" version of the Tradfri is said to only have 3 steps in color temperature with the original Tradfri bridge and app. Is that also the case for the Hue Bridge or does it "unlock" more colors (so it'd be just a limitation of the Ikea smartphone app, not the bulb software)? Thanks!
It's just a limitation of the IKEA gateway and remote, the bulb (and the full-color bulb) are capable of many more fine variations of whites and colors.
Thx a lot for the VERY fast answer! :) Very nice, I know where I'm going this weekend ;)
I already thought of it as it just kind of makes sense (noone cares about more than 3 light colors, so the interface of the IKEA app is kept clean and simple). However, it might look strange if I put a Hue and a Tradfri into the same lamp and they are (too much) differently colored, because I cannot adjust the Tradfri enough... So thank you again, I googled this for >1h and couldn't find any answer to this question!
Sure thing! The Hue light will be more deeply saturated with some colors, especially green, vs the full-color Tradfri. So if they are side-by-side it could look strange.
I don't plan to use the color ones (at least not more than one and I'm not yet sure which one to choose for this, because the Hue is brighter, the Tradfri is cheaper). The rest "side-by-side" ones will be the "Ambiance White" ones - not only because they are cheaper, but also because they are brighter than the Hues. However, I still got one Philips Hue Ambiance White, so I want to continue using it for now. So: 1 colored whatever; 1 Hue Ambiance White; 1 Tradfri "Ambiance White" in one lamp...
Hello, I would like to ask you if it is possible to change color temperature on IKEA tradfri using Philips Bridge to different then 3 predefined colours? I have white spectrum GU10 bulbs, however I dont like 2700K a 4000K is too white. I would like to set temperature similar to 3000K, however it's not possible via Tradfri app or Tradfri remote. So using Philips bridge and application I can set different temperature and then use Tradfri remote to switch it on and off with last used color? Thank you very much.
It is possible to make the color temp changes beyond the 3 presets using the Philips Hue Bridge. Didn't try adding the remote to it in that configuration, but some people (if I recall correctly) have done it. It takes a bit of Googling to get the right sequence of button presses to get the remote setup properly.
The combination of IKEA bulb+HUE bridge is working with Apple Home kite, meaning does it works with Siri ? Thanks
Sadly it doesn't work with Siri because Apple locks out HomeKit from recognizing anything but Hue bulbs on the Hue hub. But the Tradfri gateway is now HomeKit-enabled, so the bulbs will work with Siri in their "native habitat".
Where do I get the lights in the thumbnail?
IKEA :) They don't seem to make them in white anymore though. Here's a link to find them - www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=kajuta
Can you connect the Ikea light switch to the pileups hue swich
It should technically be possible. Some users have reported success with doing it with the SmartThings hub but not the Hue Bridge. The two switches probably can't be cross-connected, though.
Got a question! I just bought some Ikea lights today (Oct. 21, 207), and I'm trying to pair them to a Huge bridge. I followed your process and can get it to flash, but it never shows up in the Hue app after going full brightness :( I've tried it several times now, any ideas?
Sure. Which specific IKEA Tradfri lights did you purchase?
Smarter Home Life I got the E26 1000 lumen white only bulb, found here: m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/80339436/
I found that boxes labeled 1721 and up are supposed to have the newer firmware that "just works" with the Hue hub, but mine are 1706. Will the process in this video work with those without a firmware update?
For reference, I have an up to date, late generation hub (the square-ish one).
Thanks for your help!
Sure thing. Thanks for the info on the specifically-labeled boxes. I have that same E26 bulb and it never paired after multiple attempts to the Hue Bridge (square one). But, that was at least a month ago and they may have finally issued a firmware update for it. The only way to know for sure is to get the IKEA bridge and check the firmware and update it if possible.
i dunno, its a bit of faff to save a little money. i'd rather buy hue bulbs that i know be better and will continue to work (philips have updated firmware to cut off 3rd party bulbs before). would be cool to see it working directly with smartthings though :)
Right. Actually, IKEA had publicly announced before that they were working directly with Philips to enable the functionality. I think if Philips cuts-off 3rd-party bulbs again in the future, they're screwing themselves over. The first time it was met with massive customer backlash.
Seems this Zigbee thing is not that standardized so Philips would have to test with Ikea equipment as well when doing releases. I'd hope they do that, because I like the programmability and price of the hub. Were they to break things again I would find a replacement, and would not be tied to peripherals of Hue any more.
There are certain flavors of Zigbee, such as Light Link vs Home Automation protocol. Also, Philips has enabled some custom functionality with their bulbs. Philips and IKEA are working together to "officially" make the IKEA bulbs compatible with the Hue Bridge. There's an interesting discussion about some of these issues here: developers.meethue.com/content/philips-hue-and-ikea-tr%C3%A5dfri
Do you need the Ikea gateway to use these bulbs with Hue?
Should not. The earlier versions of the bulbs didn't have the right firmware to support Hue control, but the ones in stores now should be on the latest version.
@SmarterHomeLife I need this to work with Siri via HomeKit . Is that possible ?
The Tradfri lights can work with HomeKit with the Tradfri Gateway, yes.
HELLO HOW CAN I KEEP THE LIGHT CHANGING THE COLORS WITH ONLY THE REMOTE
Sadly there isn't a way to do this with the IKEA remote.
Would love to support your show. But how? Patreon is creditcard only and i dont have that. I only have iDeal. Patreon is not “every-people-that-want-to-support-the-show friendly”.
so compatibility between manufacturers isn't guaranteed and you'll be unable to update products of competitors.
I'll see if I can stick with Philips products instead, that's a -1 for the ZigBee protocol
6.50 thank me later :)
Thank you for learning how to correctly post time codes
2:25 did a high schooler design that UI 🤮
You are all over the place. Seriously. Do better bro. You could of made a sandwich in the middle of this and it would of made sense in this video.
Way too long winded and confusing. Jumping all over. Fail.
This light sucks
bla bla bla bla ... god 7m of bla bla...
Can I connect the Ikea lights to 1st generation philips bridge?
-Should- be possible, but don't have a 1st-gen bridge to test with.
