Except the predator-prey dynamic is reversed
the fact that the kid literally turned into a watermelon and none of the kids cared or even looked at him like he is weird kind of tells me this is a common problem in this world. it kind of worries me the other kids literally saw their friend turn into a watermelon, didn't care, didn't ask where a random watermelon came from, and just ate his corpse without any remorse is kind of scary. also what would it feel like to be slowly turned into a watermelon, just your organs growing and turning into plants and eventually your brain would be completley transformed and you would die. also i know this story about a guy who was eating peas and a pea went into his lung and grew inside of it
He got his revenge since they will all have the same fate as him.
Regarding the man with the pea, it would be decently sterile within your lungs.

That's only half the truth. The shells of black watermelon seeds are not just indigestible, but also hard and sharp. That can cause injuries if you ingest too many for the body to surround them with softer matter on the way through the digestive system. With Watermelons being almost entirely water and hardly any tissue, that's easier to do than you think. It's not a smart move to risk getting half-digested feces and intestinal bacteria into the bloodstream.
However, if you chew them properly, Watermelon seeds contain valuable nutrients that would be a waste to just flush down the toilet undigested, or toss into the garbage.

What makes this worse is that they will become watermelon as well, most likely leading to their destruction. We can also assume that the "man-melons" have some sort of mind altering affect that causes people to want to eat them, why else would you eat watermelon you know for a fact to have once been your friend? this means that more and more people will eat the melon, be destroyed, and be eaten. The growth of this melon plague will be exponential and will likely lead to the death of the human race, and possibly all multicellular animal life.
