- Deanna Durbin, at age 18, singing Franz Schubert's masterpiece. Here is what Schubert had to say about this song, in a letter to his father:
"My new songs from Scott's 'Lady of the Lake' especially had much success. They also wondered greatly at my piety, which I expressed in a hymn to the Holy Virgin and which, it appears, grips every soul and turns it to devotion."

Ave Maria
Gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave, ave dominus
Dominus tecum
Benedicta tu in mulieribus
Et benedictus
Et benedictus fructus ventris
Tuae, Jesus.
Ave Maria
Ave Maria
Mater Dei
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Ora, ora pro nobis
Ora, ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Nunc et in hora mortis
In hora mortis nostrae
In hora mortis, mortis nostrae
In hora mortis nostrae
Ave Maria
Amen

Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

I finished my letter to Deanna then set it aside. A week or two had passed and I heard the saddest of news - the world had lost one of the greatest voices of our generations. Losing her voice, her presence, and her beauty was bad enough - losing her legendary talents, the memories she created - was devastating. They, those whom I enjoyed most in this meager lifetime, brought more than laughter and joy to me. Gone are the most enjoyable of friends - she, Deanna, among them.
i was named after deanna. i am now 62 and have just watched her for the first time. no wonder my mother loved her so much. fantastic
I'm 54 years old and I can't help crying when I hear this too.
So beautiful! My mother had this sung to her by a nurse as she was dying! Tears to my eyes every time I hear it! I love this so much!
I’m crying now!
I'm a 28 year old woman who only cries under very very rare circumstances. And yet, no matter how many times I watch this, it makes me tear up. I understand exactly where you're coming from. It's heart-breaking beauty!
not only one of the loveliest women in filmdom but one of the loveliest sopranos ever to grace the entertainment industry, and I am very proud to be able to say, a distant relative of mine.
The most beautiful Ave Maria rendition I have ever heard!! Miss Durbin's voice is so smooth, so soothing, so angelic, I want to cry.
So beautiful and such a way to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus.
What a blessing! Just beautiful. Always brings tears; and, this is how nuns should look. Good to see all the stars of Hollywood's Golden Years: Kay Francis, Walter Pidgeon, Henry Stephenson and S.Z. Szakall.
All I know is that this was my mothers favorite rendition of this song and is why I love it also....Thank You Deanna.....
I am so pleased I have found this.Deanna Durbin had a truly beautiful voice, pure as spring water. As a 50 year old man, seeing this brings back so many happy memories of sitting with my mother on a saturday afternoon to watch the old black and white films.Well done for posting this clip!
Absolutely true, and I love the Bach/Gounod piece with Miss Durbin and the choir boys as well. "Ave Maria"--Hail, Mary. "Gratia plena"--full of grace. Doesn't get much more Latin than that!
This is a most beautiful hymn. I dont know why people would want to bash each other. think about the words. absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!! Excellent video and thanks for sharing!!!
Reminds me of my Catholic School Education from 1953-1961. . . .those were the days!! God Bless for posting such a beautiful song!!!
I cannot believe the beauty of her voice, had not heard this for years, Deanna no one comes close to you for voice sheer perfection, RIP angel on earth.now angel in heaven.xx
Deanna Durbin is a beautiful beautiful voice beautiful woman 🙏
Just imagine if there was ANYONE living today that could sing just one third as well as Beloved Deanna? The mind boggles desn't it?
BRAVA Deanna, you were the BEST!!!!!!!!!!
A beautiful singer with a beautiful voice singing one of the most beautiful vocal pieces ever composed
The purest, clearest, most perfect soprano voice ever. Others have lovely qualities also, but she is my favorite!
love this by lanza, but its one of the best i have heard a soprano sing, a pure voice diffrent to any other soprano. like lanza a voice of beauty....
Mary was my Mothers name. We felt the presence of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes in 1988 as we marched in the evening procession with 10,000 of our closest friends and sang this song. Breath taking!!
My mom's favorite song. I love to listen to it and think of her.
She has an Angelic face for sure, a powerful voice descended from Heavens to touch the heart of hearts of all mankind.
no words need to be spoken, everytime I listen to her beautiful voice, so under rated, yet one of the best, every time she makes me cry, I think I have watched all her movies, especially when she starred with Franchot Tone, I am sure there was more going on there, the chemistry between the both of them was electric.
O Most Blessed among women art thou, Oh holy Mother of God.
My first true Love I fell in love with her at the Loews valencia In Manhattan years ago.
her voice is something special
Angelic Face with an Angelic voice! what a combination! Truly Heaven Sent!
Best I've heard yet and I'm still looking
This rendition of Ave Maria always moves me to tears I've listened to Deanna sing it hundreds of of times over the last 50years, my mother bought the record during WW2 and I found it in a box when I had just become a teenager and loved it ever since. Her voice is wonderful and she was such a lovely lady who wrote to me a couple of times and sent me a signed photo from Mad About Music dedicating the still to me which I sent to her some 30years ago, sadly missed by many LOL R.I.P.
Breath taking, her voice and beauty dares to be❤
Lovely...one of the most inspired and beautiful songs ever written. Schubert was touched by the muse.
Never seen this movie or heard this rendition of This beautiful song! Wonderful!
This song really grips the soul.
Heartbreakingly beautiful, I can't believe that I have never come across this version before. It makes me wonder what other treasures are out there. Thank you CZcams.

This song reminds me of my dear Mum who passed away a month ago. I can't put into words how much I miss her. Love you Mum.
Phenomenal as Schubert version is by far the most beautiful Ave Maria one will ever hear!
I love this song, a beautiful tribute to the Mother of God. Thank for posting it here.
One of the greatest voices of the 20th century. She inspired Maria Callas and Mario Lanza. RIP Deanna.
I have goosebumps listening to her. What a fantastic sweet operatic voice, so smooth. The best Ave Maria rendition I've heard. Just beautiful!
Beautiful. My dad loved her voice
Words could never begin to describe Deanna’s pure tone and elegance. She is simply perfect.
My mother loved Deanna Durbin, and I now know why, what a divine talent.
Frisson ,frisson , et larmes , j’arrive pas à contrôler mes émotion !!!!
Thank you for quoting Franz Schubert's letter to his father! Thanks for sharing this Rarity!
Потрясающая актриса.
A great performance for our Blessed Lady...
So angelic and heavenly
I adored Deanna, grew up watching all her movies and used to say my prayers that God would give me a voice like hers.. He never did, of course, her's was one in a million.. The fact that she could act too was just icing on the cake.. They just don't make movies like this anymore and they just don't make singers like Deanna..
If Schubert wrote nothing else he would be remembered till the end of time for Ave Maria!
My mother sang this at weddings it was her favourite song, soo I had it played at her funeral it is such a magnificent song.
amazing performance !!! beautiful the voice of an angel
Perfecto!!! Mesmerising, moving, devastating, soothing, amazing, uplifting, sad, inspired. xx
Incredible song with the perfect voice
Just beautiful!
Thank you Robby for sharing it with me.
R.I.P. I've loved her voice and her movies so much, tried to watch every single one of them. She was a wonderful singer and actress and a great person.
One of the greatest female voices ever. Pity she lived in the early days of film and recordings. Perfect intonation, breathing, phrasing and rhythm. What more can one want?
As a singer Deanna will never be overshadowed by anyone. Outside of opera she was quite simply in a class of her own!
Oh, Ceil! This is just beautiful. This is the kind of music one will hear in Heaven. No one knows what Heaven will be like, but I can't imagine Heaven without Mozart' music, as well as other great composers - Haydn's "Cretion" , etc. And now let's add Deanna Durbin to that list. (Of course, she's still living. :-) This is the best, most wonderful and glorious "Ave Maria" I've ever heard. Thank you for the posting.
operabuff1935
The Franz Schubert composition, the melody, the music, the arrangement, the performance by Deanna Durbin all magically woven together to create a masterpiece and to have been there during this scene would have been a moving and spiritual experience.
the voice of an angel
This is the best version of Ave Maria i have ever heard! Luv you and your beautiful soprano voice
This is a real classic version of this gorgeous piece. I listen to this one on my AVE MARIA playlist when I'm feeling nostalgic about my grandmother, who loved to sing this piece.
The most perfect version that I´ve hear
one of the best I've heard. She has a voice of an angel and a face to match.
what more can be said, simply beautiful
My Mom introduced me to this beautiful singer and we would watch her old movies and of course this piece on you tube. This was the song she remembered as a child and loved this so much. Mom died a few days ago and 'Ave Maria' was played at her funeral mass. I will always think of this with every rosary I offer for her.
Very beautiful voice and passion. Loved Deanna also in "One Hundred Men and A Girl". Was able to get on DVD.
Wow! I have heard this many times from different singers but "Wow" Deanna's is the nicest of all. Gorgeous. Spine tingling stuff!
Wow! She was the diva of the 1940s and boy could she sing!
Beautiful; the golden era of movies.
Her voice is so wonderful...timeless, agelessly sublime!
I remember seeing her hearing her at the loew's 72 street in New York City when I was a child. in the thirties. I saw her in several othe movies.I never forgot her voice. It is beautiful
Wonderful voice, my late father’s favourite, thanks for posting
Apparently 19 people are without souls or worse than satan. How this song, this rendition cannot bring a sinner to their knees or tears of joy, is beyond me.
Even Satan trembles at the mere sound of an "Ave".
Thank you for posting, this is one of the most beautiful renditions of this song I've heard in a while. How I miss when the Catholic Church was truly Catholic. "THIS" is what the angels treasure and what we strive for. Merry CHRISTmas, to all!
Anyone who would give this a thumbs down is just sadly ignorant. Even if it is not the style they listen to they should at least appreciate the performance and the song for the quality and the skill that it is.
It's such a shame that there aren't movies made like this anymore. I am a thirty something year old Catholic who longs for the church to be as it once was portrayed in beautiful segments of movies like this. Times when people not only respected the religious, but revered them with the highest regard. Now they are made nothing but mockeries of them. Jesus, mercy! Thanks for the beautiful video post. God bless.
That's what I call classic beauty!
My favourite song of all time by Deanna Durbin simply stunning!
I just Love this Hymns, it make me Cry---I use to sing it with weddings and funeral, when I was young. It's So emotional for me, with the hurtful journey with my marriage....
man she put her heart and soul into this song
This is what heavenly angels must look and sound like
A Canadian treasure.
Yes! I'm so proud to be Canadian right now :)
SO BEAUTIFUL IT MAKES ME WEEP.
MY BELOVED FATHER DIED AGED 94 3 YEARS AGO .AS A CHILD GROWING UP HE WOULD LISTEN TO DEANNA DURBIN SING AND HE WOULD TREMBLE AND SAY TO ME ,,,LIN NEVER WILL YOU HEAR SUCH A VOICE AS THIS ,OTHERS DO WELL BUT NOONE CAN COMPARE WITH HER .HE WAS SO RIGHT A BEAUTIFUL LADY AN ASTOUNDING VOICE .SENT FROM HEAVEN
Hard to follow that lovely performance. May the Lord bless her immortal soul Amen
R.I.P. Deanna I miss you and I will always love you :'(
Deanna Durbin sings it beautifully. Even though I prefer when this song is sung in the original German, I love Deanna's voice. Love this movie too.
She stopped making movies before I was even aware of her. Never realized how beautifully she sang until U-tube. Danke sehr!
Beautiful singing voice...brings tears to your eyes and love in your heart...thanks for sharing
Deanna and her voice are both unforgettable. We're so lucky to be able to see and hear her at her best.
P&D
I'm not a Catholic, but since seeing "Fantasia" as a child, this has always been one of my favorite pieces of music. Talent is a gift from God. You respond to the 'spark' of God in the composer, musician, singer, whatever the artist is. It speaks to the God
'spark' in you.
Never again will there be a voice like this.
The song Ave Maria is beautiful music from Heaven.
Imagine having to watch an Advertisment for Budweiser before hearing Ave Maria... welcome to America.. :-(
I second this. I hate the CZcams stupid advertisements interrupting. It really puts me off.
