Food For Thought.... Long Read warning.
Mike, I'm about 17 hours late seeing this, writing this before the ship came through, (Shelly Just walked up)
What would be cool is if you could find out what kind of repairs had to be done.
Anytime you play with engines on these beasts, You are talking massive weights for parts(tons possibly)and then you most always have availability issues or having to have machine work done and then one has to get in-line for that...(most times) so a month for something on the scale of this really isn't that bad,. Heck I can have to wait for parts for my vehicles or equipment,(tractors, excavators, etc)that long.
You don't just run down to the local parts store and say... Hey I need pistons and ring kit for the Barker, or gasket set, or do you have a camshaft or a Crank and Bearings,. Man I'm getting a chuckle just thinking about the different components or machine work required to get something like this going again,. depending on what gave up the ghost, even minor stuff can be major on something this size.
I hate it for the wallet that took the hit for repairs and revenue missed while being down. and if any of the crew missed work right here before Christmas and during Thanksgiving. ALL that would $UCK...
And Doing a Test run would be good,. Except... considering the crew and vessel expense to run out the harbor and not sure if they pay for the bridge to go up and down, Just like I'm sure many don't realize how much an Airliner pays every time they land and take off (runway/airport toll)for lack of better words.
But the dollar amount to do a test run would make all our heads spin. If you were to put a dollar amount out there.
What I have mentioned here is what many never think of nor do they have a reason to think of.
But when you stop and think about it... Overwhelming might be a good start.
Sorry for the long read but I thought I'd shine a different light(Just a Little)of what all these companies have to deal with on a daily basis across the World,. Cruise lines included.
Cheers.
Well thought out things to think about and information like this make the best comments. This comment should absolutely applauded and it’s fantastic to read. I read this two times. I love the prospective that you provided and especially someone like me that doesn’t know a ton about engines. This gives me more information to think about. Absolutely fantastic stuff. Please bring more like this to the table for all of us to enjoy and learn from in the future.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️🙏
Glad you enjoyed.
Thanks for bringing this video to us and all the leg and camera work you do.

Man, I had to watch the JRB coming through the canal on my iPhone on the way to handbell practice! Will watch it again here....so glad you are out here for us!! I could not have been more thrilled to hear the "Barker bark" again in real life!! THANK YOU, Mike!!!!! 😘🥰
Thank you again for that wonderful picture that you shared. It just helps us explore the world with these neat pictures coming in. Thanks again my friend Elizabeth.
Yes, that was fantastic. Thanks for bundling up and bringing us the Barker.
The barker is such an awesome ship
@@vibewithmike I watched the JRB come out to Lake Superior on Duluth areal lift bridge
@ILikeGT101 that’s awesome! What an awesome ship
I lived in Duluth as a young girl....I loved hearing the ship horns.
I hope these videos bring you back to Duluth
Awesome. Woo,. Merry Christmas every one on the Barker and fans,😘

That was Awesome Mike... thanks and stay warm and enjoy your hot coco!
Thanks for watching the ship Ken
The Barker Bark is sounding grand!!!

@@vibewithmike My wife and I watched this video this morning while eating breakfast.
Loved it!! Well done!!
My favorite ship and horn, 🤗💥💥
I’m so happy that the captain did a master salute on the ship
Mine, too!
How awesome was that ship! It was so great
Glad the HORN didn’t get “repaired”. When you are perfect the way you are nobody messes with perfection! 🎉🎺
I’m so happy the captain gave us a salute
Wow, the captain and wheelsman sure did a good job with that lineup, entering the span and easing through the canal while babying that port side engine!
The captain really stepped up to the plate and gave us an awesome horn salute what a ship
Hi Mike, so glad the Barker is back in service, we've been waiting a month for her. You finally got a taste of snow.
I just checked and it's only travelling at 7.9 miles!
I’m so happy to see that shit moving again. I love it.
Yeah, it’s smart they’re taking it easy to make sure the engine is OK
It's going to be gorgeous with all the stars in the sky, too 🤩🤩
All the best things I could’ve happened in this video actually happened. What an awesome backdrop and an awesome ship.
I LOVED the sound of the Barker's horn 😊! What a growl! I was 👏👏 for the horn. How awesome was that?! Mike, that was a GREAT video!!
One of the most fantastic ships out there without a doubt
Yert Mike… Happy Monday Night… it’s cold as snowballs here in Sparta Tennessee… so it’s 10:36 and the temp is 28 degrees and the wind bites pretty hard. Just cold with no snow. It’s great to see the James R Barker back out on the Great Lakes tonight. Safe travels to the Captain and Crew and we will all be waiting for the big long horn chords coming into the Duluth Harbor. Thank you for getting out tonight in the cold. See you next time…🛳️🥶🛳️🥶🛳️
The captain really gave us a treat with that powerful horn blast, and we were able to enjoy it with 5 million lights at Bentleyville. It was so wonderful. It did get cold here in Duluth today.
Great to see the Barker back underway again! Fantastic coverage Mike thanks so much!!
Thanks Peter, I’m just glad to see that barker back out there doing some work. I was worried that it would stay in all season.
Yet another gorgeous night! 😊😊👍
It was a really great ship
Great job by the Captain with a nice master salute!! So good to hear the JRB again. Fair winds, Captain and crew!!
Victoria, can you imagine how lucky we got to see this ship go out with the Bentleyville lights and night? Unbelievable.
@@vibewithmike It was awesome, Mike! I kept saying “c’mom, where’s the horn??” 😆 The relief capt did a nice job! Sorry I missed the live but was so happy to see the JRB back in action. God, I love these ships!
@VictoriaS-lh6ym just when we thought there would be no horn it was a master salute
Yes, the Bentleyville lights, the bridge lights, the reflections on the water…it was a great video. You do such a nice job and I so appreciate you. I wouldn’t get to experience this otherwise! 🙏🏻
@@vibewithmike Just awesome. Hope you have a blessed and happy holiday season, Mike.
Thanks Vibe with MIKE! MLVS (DCHS61) Glendale, AZ! Really appreciate seeing videos from my hometown!!!!
You’re so lucky, now living in a beautiful state of Arizona, and you lived in Duluth. Best of both worlds.
Thanks, Mike. Another great livestream.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. There’s nothing like seeing the barker on the move and especially when we thought that it might not even move the rest of the season. Powerful horn blast too!
That horn is THE best sounding horn ever!
There’s not another horn out there that’s cooler. That’s the ultimate alarm clock ship.
@@vibewithmike I think my kids would think I've gone looney if I made it my phone ringtone. Tempting :)
Beautiful clear crisp night.
Cruising gently through the channel.
It was cool seeing the ship go very slow through the canal. I’m sure they were going kind of slow to test out that engine.
Worth the wait! Master salute. ❤
That was an awesome salute from the ship
This is pure love for these beautiful ships. Thank you for sharing such wonderful information
Absolutely, these ships are awesome and they’re absolutely fun to watch and to think about
Awesome Mike great to hear she is back in service. And what an amazing salute. All right boat friends... Sail on over to the lLIKE BUTTON and give the button a master salute. It helps the channel
Can you believe how lucky we got to hear master salute from this awesome ship! At first, I thought the vessel was going to move to another dock, but I heard the radio call that the captain said they are going out to the lake. That really made my day, but I had no idea how fun and awesome this would be.
Sorry I missed the live show, another great video.
The Barker is the best
This was my favorite Barker video I’ve ever done
Just watched it again. I know there’s no crying in baseball but I have cried twice watching this I don’t know what it is about the ships, but I always do cry.
There’s nothing wrong with crying at all. These ships bring out the emotions in many people You can tell in the video how excited I was to watch it. We all have different emotions from the ships. Cry away my friend! These ships are wonderful.
Watched on catch up. Very atmospheric Mike - thank you for your dedication to the job which gives all us viewers hours of pleasure 😁
I love your passion for these ships!
The bridge does make it cooler, also how close the ships are. It's great to learn the meanings of the lights, horns,etc..
These ships are mesmerizing to watch my friend
Great to see the James R Barker back
I’m hoping I get to see this ship return back to Duluth
Amazing video Mike and a master salute to top it off
I could never imagine the conditions to see the ship finally go out. Bentleyville, 5 million lights, a master salute.
Thank you! Watched on Harbor Cams live and may have shed a tear or two! Now watching you!
It’s so wonderful to see that JRB leave and everything seems to be fine on the ship
Yes!!! She's my general ring tone! And on my bucket list to see and hear her!
@laurenolson8492 we have to get that ringtone!
I'm not a ship macanic. But I am a gear head. She looks like she's running strong. Safe voyage J.R.B.
That’s great to know, I hope that ship never has issues again. I love seeing it on the water and I know everybody else does too.
My middle name is James, so I like that ship even better, hahaha! But just for fun, I had my musical tuner out, and James went from 113.0 HZ, which is a B flat2, and went up to a 7 4. 8, which is an E flat2, so it actually has two notes . The tower is 282.5 HZ, which is a D4. I thought that was kind of cool! So now you know, in case you were wondering, hahaha!🎵🎵😊
Now this is some cool new information that I’ve never even heard of with a ship! That is so cool to know the movement level with that tuner. If you’re able to, in the future, can you do that for other ships? This is so cool and unique. it’s actually teaching me and others how the tuner process works! Very cool and different for us!
Most definitely it be my pleasure.!@@vibewithmike
The Barker is heading to the TORCO ore dock in Toledo. Toledo Ore Railroad Company. Most people think of ore shipments bound for mills at Gary, IN and Burns/Indiana Harbors. But being an Ohio guy with family ties to Toledo, lets not forget about Toledo. The TORCO dock receives ore and then ships the pellets by rail to mills in KY and southeastern Ohio. Mostly KY these days. The VanEnkevort fleet of articulated tugs regularly ship ore to Toledo.
Great to see the ship back out travelling the lake. Mike thanks for the video showing the second ship with a steering pole. Low tech but obviously very efficient. Kids said hello. Take care Chris and family
I hope you and the family are doing great. What better than to watch the James R Barker head back out on the lake
I didn't get to watch the livestream tonight😢.... But, I got to watch it about a half hour later. WHAT AN AWESOME MASTER SALUTE!!!!!😊
The JRB's my favorite ship; and I missed seeing it.
Can you believe how beautiful it was to see that ship again? I didn’t know if it was going to move this year
Mike l do remember that commercial !! I loved it when the butler asked the question about playing the tape and the Guy's response.
I know this commercial is a blast from the past, but it definitely felt like paralleled the horn from this ship
Great Video Mike I Enjoyed It Fantastic Horn Salute Good Luck To The Crew of The Barker To Be Sailing Again Mike Have A Great Monday 🌃😊
How can I have a replicate this awesome video? The ship was stunning.
Just watched the replay of everyone's favorite ship.missed that wonderful horn salute. Great to see her back @ work. Great video thanks Mike
The captain really gave us what we wanted with the ship
Hi Mike, I am enjoying to-nights your commentary for the exit of the JRBarker. Thanks Mike for your ongoing commentary from Duluth,. sorry I am not there to enjoy. Warwick G from NZ.
I really enjoy your comments. You’re very positive. I mentioned you because I wanted others to know how much I appreciate you dropping comments and being part of our boat friends community.
Always wondered what the control room smells like when a boats exhaust passes right under it. Nice to hear the bark again.
Maybe they hold their breath as the ship goes under?😂 The Barker is such an awesome ship!
Probably no different than locomotive exhaust. I haven't been next to any ship's, though, just guessing because it's diesel.
Well, missed the live feed again but got to watch the show on the video replay. Live or not the JRB is a spectacular sight and we did get the salute. Obviously the regular skipper puts on a fantastic performance with the horn but this one wasn’t bad. Great piece, Mike and hello to all of the Boat Friends. I hope to catch the next live show.
Greg, how could we ask for more in this video! All of the lights, the bridge, the salute, etc.. How the heck am I gonna top this in the future? This was so fun to record. It really was so fun.
What a party awesome video and salute :)
Ken, I’m so so happy this ship did a master salute for everybody
I worked on the Barker a long time ago. If I recall correctly, she had two Fairbanks Morse 8,000 horsepower diesel engines and 4 Caterpillar generators to provide electrical power. I recall there were problems with the port side engine, but I'm not sure why. I did a cursory search on the internet, but I didn't see any news stories as to what the problem was or why it took so long to repair. I know Interlake has a Facebook page, but I don't have an account, so I can't look there. Perhaps we should put boat friend Chuck G on the case. He always has a lot of inside information. I forgot to mention that I worked on deck, so I didn't get down to the engine room much. Great video as usual. I did manage to catch it live. I hope you made it to Grandma's for a hot chocolate, or perhaps something stronger! As for the ships in the picture, they both looked like salties to me.
Corporal, I said it before, and I will say it again! I have nothing but respect and love for people like you that have put time in on the water. It takes guts and there’s time way from love ones that other professions don’t encounter. Serious, thank you! there’s nothing like the horn on the barker. I actually think Chuck might know more information about those horns but I’m not certain. He is really helped me with a lot of information over the last year that has been critical to me understanding ships in the industry more. I did actually go over to grandmas right after.👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️📣📣📣📣📣📣📣
The JRB got some bark to it!❤
Thanks Mike!
Amazing such a huge vessel just creeping from the darkness. I can imagine seeing that sucker on the radar screen in the fog! Hair standing up when that horn went off too!
I definitely tried to warn that lady that came up to me on the pier what was about to happen. That horn is no joke.
Had to watch it again for the BARK 💖😁
And here was a moment when we didn’t think the ship was going to do a salute

As a kid in Sturgeon Bay Wi the ships coming through the canal are supper close. Was there for the Bell River launch from Bay Ship as well as many others from all the builders throughout my life.
That is one best horn sound on that ship❤
This ship gets the gold medal of the coolest horn
Best horn ever!!!
Safe journey!
You could hear the horn to the top of the hill in Duluth I bet. What a ship.
It is Tuesday morning here. It is fine and sunny and quite warm.
Hey, you’ve already made it to Tuesday! That’s awesome. I hope you enjoyed the ship. Debbie, everything that could happen right in this video did for the ship. The awesome lights in the backdrop, the lighting in general, ship did a master salute. It was awesome.
Hey Mike and all Boat Friend NATION! Sorry I missed the live feed as grand kids came over right when the boat was coming into view. They don’t call her the Barker for nothing! Wow! That was a blast , literally……. What a big fella for sure, and both stacks were pumping, and could not hear anything knocking going by so she has passed the test so far anyway. Fair seas and safe passage to the Boat and crew!
Chuck, I know you were just as pumped up watching this as I was. As I watched this happen live, I could not believe that we were watching the JRB going out with Bentleyville lights in the background. I didn’t even think the ship would make it out for the season. It’s definitely a video that’s gonna be hard for me to top Brother.
@@vibewithmike What amazes me is how quiet something that is over 3 city blocks long, is so very quit going by…… And when you think about it, it is not that far away, so any noise would be audible for sure…. To see that huge ship with Bentlyville lights in the background was something you would think you had paid someone to set up so perfectly. And you pulled it off!!! Well done my friend, well done… Classic…… You realize you have raised the bar right? Hahahahaha. Really beautiful nights work for sure!!!!!
@chucke4294 that is seriously one of the craziest things, All of these ships are super quiet as they go by but they’re enormous.
You don't need much power for only 8 knots whatever the limit is through the canal.
@maxrshelltrack7443 Max, did you see this one posted today? I think you’ll like it, it’s out on the boat. czcams.com/video/VbjFR4cQhEs/video.htmlsi=VYNQyn_3Q_6JAOKc
That hip horn is so awesome!!
I wonder if you opened your door if you could hear it to your house, that horn on the ship?📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣📣⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Such a nice show, the most memorable ship movement I've ever seen was BB 62 , USS New Jersey being towed up the Delaware river to where she is now, was a spectacular view from the Ben Franklin bridge so I was looking down on her, hard to believe that a warship can be so beautiful
Here’s that exact situation with the shipping towed right here www.nj.com/camden/2023/12/battleship-new-jersey-to-be-towed-to-dry-dock-early-next-year-for-maintenance.html
@VibewithMike thank you so much for sharing the Barker with us as I just missed her going out, hubby wanted to watch his sports 😭 Hope she makes it back one more time before they close the Locks!
I’m gonna keep my eye on this ship. Thank you so much for watching my friend.

Awesome coverage man.
Sorry Mike I missed the live stream yet again.
You definitely will enjoy this one. I sure did. Everything I would want to happen in a ship video did happen in this one tonight.
I am so glad The Barker is alright! Snow i8s snow bro! Its a shift in the right direction! Dude that is awesome! Hopefully one day you can get a ride on one of these amazing ships through one of these awesome crew members! The Bentleyville lights look great! I wonder what the issue was with the Barker. I am not going to cheat and look haha! He sure did! Sounded like a tuba! Thank you for sharing Mike! Have a great Tuesday my friend!

Hi Mike! I missed the live, but it certainly didn't take away the magic that I experienced with this particular video. I've been dealing with stage 4 cancer since 2017. The last couple of weeks have been a very rough go, especially these last few nights . The view of the colored lights with the reflection in the water and the view looking up underneath the bridge with those three spotlights we're just absolutely beautiful! The reason I say that this was magical for me is because I forgot all about the sickness even though it was short-lived it made up for all the time that I've been experiencing the sickness and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do. You put a lot of heart full of love and compassion in these videos you do and I felt that from day one I never thought of how much peace, tranquility and healing that comes over me by just watching these Majestic ships can be, but it sure dose help me! Your videos have become something I completely enjoy! I hope someday I can come over there and stand where you are and just take it all in. I love you, brother, and blessings of love, peace togetherness, and protection always to everyone! 💙🙏🏻💪
Brother, you keep fighting that cancer because myself and all of your other boat friends have your back man! Never give up!
Regarding the ship, to even think that the ship was going to leave this year, versus being repaired at all, off-season was surprising, but to have it leave with Bentleyville lights and have a master salute was absolutely unbelievable!👍👍👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️

Have you ever had a green Christmas, when I grew up in Duluth never had a green Christmas but here in Indiana had green Christmases and this year a green Christmas
It’s been a while, but we definitely will have a Christmas with no snow on the ground. It’s gonna be kind of weird in Duluth, but we’ll keep looking at the ships.
Another awesome video @Vibe with Mike
J! Thanks man! I really didn’t know for sure if the ship would be moving because of the repairs. Last year the American Spirit took off the entire end of the shipping season, and made its first move earlier this spring, that too was being repaired. I was so pumped up that I 100% forgot to take a decibel rating. I was just caught up in the moment man. I hope you are doing great, all the best to you my friend. I’m assuming it’s still in Japan?
We just got back from Boulder City, NV
I’ve been to Boulder city many times, what a beautiful place!
Good work Mike love your show. From Tim in West Fargo ND.
All’s right with the world
Especially now that we know we have this beautiful ship back out there
Heya - I might possible have seen you..... I love the JRB -so when Duluth Harbor Com bought up a video of her leaving yesterday, I had to watch it. At the end it showed someone climbing to where the Boat Friends Beacon seemed to be - completely covered in a hoodie lol......
I wish I had some photos to show the Boat Friends but alas I have none - not really a boat person when I was a young. The only time my Hubs and I have been on a ship was a Med Cruise on the Ocean Village for our honeymoon nearly 20 years ago.
Waiting to see all the rest of your videos and the rest of the Boat Friends photos etc.
Clare, that person in the hoodie was me pulling that Boat Friends Beacon down from the pull. That blue light indicates I’m going to be doing a live stream of a ship or I will be recording a ship or something in the area that will be uploaded at a later date. It was amazing seeing the Barker yesterday. The horn really was amazing as well. I still have never been on a cruise. That’s cool that you did. Go on a cruise. Fantastic. Well, I hope you and your husband have a wonderful day today. I have a very fun video coming Possibly tomorrow for you.👍⛴️

Tony, I’m really glad that you’re enjoying the ships. Just remember, they’ll never be no stress or or any issues. We’re just gonna have fun man.
Great early evening scene with the Christmas lights with rapidly disappearing evening glow.
In Ventura county we get car carriers from Japan and China in Port Hueneme (south of Oxnard) it is a deep water port that
receives many new cars from Asia. The car carriers are different shaped ocean going ships.
There are many US Navy ocean going ships that visit Port Hueneme because it is a deep water port.
It is amazing to know these ships were in China or Japan a week or 2 ago.
This is so cool Wendy, this is the type of information that expands all of our knowledge base when it comes to the Maritime industry. I want all the boat friends to check out this awesome port city! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Hueneme,_California
