First Flight in a WWII replica FI 156, Fiesler Storch.

- One of my favorite things to do is to take folks flying in general, but the Storch is so unique it is always a real treat for most folks to get a ride in it. Chris Baldyga was in Texas for an RV repair course. He's a pilot and CFI, (Certificated Flight Instructor) from Michigan. Both of his sons are pilots and one of them is an Air Traffic Controller. Chris is a Facebook friend and had seen some of my Kitfox youtube videos so he contacted me to see if I was around. He also owns a Kitfox and a Piper Cherokee (PA-28).
He showed up just to look hoping to look at the Storch, but I surprised him with almost an hour inflight. We flew the Lampasas River, Stillhouse Lake and did some stalls and other fun stuff. I let him fly as much as he wanted to, but he really loved the view from the ample window in the Storch and had a blast. Here is part one. There was just too much for one long video. 70% Scale replica of a FI-156 Fiesler Storch
The FI-156 was ahead of it's time as a German WW2 observation and liaison airplane. Capable of Very short take off and landing with a 240 hp inverted v-8 engine and leading edge slats this airplane was truly one of the first STOL airplanes of the world. The landing gear was built to keep the prop high and the long legs provided ample travel for rough off field operation. One of the most notable stories of the Storch from WW2 is the rescue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from captivity on a mountain top hotel. I won't be landing this like Luke Czepiela, a Red Bull Air Race pilot and Carbon Cub owner, on the helipad atop the 56-story Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai, but then again, I don't have Mike Patey to modify it for me. However, the Storch is pretty impressive in it's own right, even if it's not built by CubCrafters.
Although mine is a small replica it is a hoot to fly and a real crowd draw.

Man. Totally jealous. Woke up this morning to -26c/-15f. Not fit for man or beast. I'll have my truck and trailer loaded up and heading south this fall. Storch lessons are definitely on the itinerary. Thanks for sharing, Levi.
