Detroit Pizza Gets a New York Twist From These NYC Slice Masters | Food Skills

- New Yorkers are territorial when it comes to their slices. So when two Staten Island pizza legends decide to open up a Detroit-style pie shop in the heart of Manhattan, you know they better have a good reason. Enter: Lions and Tigers and Squares-a Detroit-style pizza parlor “with a New York twist.” For Francis Garcia and Sal Basille, the masterminds behind NYC’s Artichoke Basille’s Pizza, the obsession with Detroit-style pie came from a trip to the Motor City in 2013, where they got a crash-course in the town’s unique approach to cheese, sauce, and dough. Now, on the corner of 8th Avenue and West 23rd Street in Chelsea, the cousins are churning out square pizzas with the best of them, covering their dough with heaps of fresh cheddar cheese and baking it all in a pan. The result is something crisp, cheesy, and decidedly untraditional, as far as purists from both cities are concerned. "Detroit is a pizza city. I mean, come on. People forget that," Garcia says. "It was a combination of loving the way that it tastes, loving the way that it looks, and loving the way that it came about."

Im from Detroit, and it always surprises me to see how much this style is spreading. Im glad people outside this area enjoy it
Caleb is this a normal Detroit style?
@@anonymousguy1188 yes. most people still use mutz but some use chedder
You haven’t had pizza until you’ve had Buddy’s. Detroit style is besf style
@@MostLikelyMortal buddys is a nice spot.
Not going to lie I feel like I need to try this when I go to NYC. Its nice to see local culture spread.
$5 for that whole square? That's a hell of a deal!
Yeah and honestly looks like better value since 1/4 of the pie isn't just bare crust around the edges. Looks like the perfect size to split up with a friend
Not gonna lie... I'd eat the whole damn thing lol

@giglio33012 lol Americans have been saying that since New York was New Amsterdam. His own Italian grand parents probably didn't even speak English when they arrived.
@@alexanderlee5669 But I bet they tried to learn. Unlike most immigrants today.
@giglio33012 yeah because Italians just blended in and became non hypenated... Oh wait they didn't

I’m from Detroit and I have been to Chicago and New York. All 3 cities make a mean pie and taste great in their own way, but nothing beats the taste of home. Would love to try this place!
@Pappy Tron There's a place outside of Detroit that serves New Haven style pizza. In fact, the owner trained at Pepe's. So good!
where is home? (ready to start the online pizza war. lol). I'm from L.A. look up Hollywood Pies.
That sausage onion butter pizza with maple syrup sounds awesome
bob Maybe , Yes!
Sounds like diabetes

It's interesting Detroit Pizza turns out to be. Went to lions & tigers a few days ago. I was blown away with the pepperoni pizza. Cheddar cheese in a pizza is a unique substitution. Worth going if you need a new pizza experience.
We don't consider it cheddar. It's brick cheese. Super mild. Very creamy. Melts well!
you never had cheddar cheese pizza??? lol its so not new. you can find them in any frozen pizza aisle
Every time I go in the comments on every vid I see a dude smiling in black sunglasses then I realize it’s u
These dudes are Super New York... I love it
They seem like somebody put out a casting call for guys who just scream out "I'm from NY" just by standing there.
They ARE New York
I'm from Detroit and nothing makes me happier than seeing our style of pizza spreading to different parts of the US. Proud to see first we feast showing the love!

Thank you so much First We Feast for actually recognizing the City of Detroit. Its too slept on and hated.
Check out the Pizza Show on Munchies, they have an episode dedicated to Detroit.
@Aniya Raine what reasons?

Detroit represent! I'm digging the love they are showing to the city!!!
People always make fun of Detroit, but when something great comes out of the city, those same people are lining up for it. Just goes to show, greatness can come from anywhere. Love your pizza, Detroit. Fell in love with it first time I saw it; hadn't even tasted it yet. I've had many different styles, but Detroit style is quite special.
I love it when my hometown gets recognize in a good way! 😎

Jesualdo Murillo you are right they did
As a New Yorker, that pizza looks BANGIN'! ! We might be pizza snobs, but a good slice is a good slice ANYWHERE! Props to Detroit. That pepperoni slice.....damn I'm hungry now!

i LOVE detroit style pizza!!! can't wait to try this place.
I’ve been here twice since this video aired, now my #1 favorite pizza place. The sausage and onion is NO JOKE the best pizza ever
For the longest time I never realized growing up the pizza I was eating was a regional thing and outside of Michigan people had no idea what Detroit style was. I’m really glad to see other people enjoy it and these guys seem to really be doing it justice.
You really can't beat Detroit style pizza. The square shape is unique. The amount of pepperoni they put on top is PHENOMENAL. How the cheese seeps into the crust during the baking process is HEAVENLY. It's a grand meal. I think it's the BEST!
Tgat pepperoni looked fiiire broo
It's Kyuu You can get a similar pepperoni at Marcos Pizza, it’s called Old World Pepperoni there it’s pretty good
@@noahcrosby8900 is it just as good? I just found a location in Dallas I may go try

The Detroit style pizza I've had was mozzarella for most of the pie and then they would put cheddar around the rim and it gets all crispy. It is seriously good stuff.
Glad to see Buddy's getting the respect they deserve. Some of the best pizza around
That looks freaking fantastic. Woe. Wow. Pazow
I wish i had some good pizza right now :(
I'm always glad to see Detroit getting some love. I've lived in the area since I was 8 years old and while Chicago will always be home in my heart, pizza and otherwise, Detroit can make a damned good slice. And thanks for the Buddy's shoutout. They're made of awesome.
It's amazing what Detroit has created
Italian guy in the white looks like he keeps a .38 in the small of his back 💥
Thats wild man. I never thought i'd see a Detroit style pizza shop in NYC.
My dad is from Detroit! I love going out there, when I go to NYC I will definitely check this place out!
These two must own a number of pizza joints. I see them showcasing their different pizzas all the time.
sundawg911 Gotta launder that mob money somehow. Restaurant is the perfect way to do it. Food is shit just like their other laundering ops according to people who’ve eaten there.

GUYS - LOVE the mustard pie! I used to put that spicy brown on my pepper and onion slices to give it a little vinegar spice kick. the onions and peppers just POP. Like a Sausage roll without the sausage.
they shouldn't call it mustard pizza.. more like "reuben" or "ny dog"
haha, i half think it's more of a "fuck you, you'll like this fucking pie" move. Gotta do it
Pizza Hut? _FU’GET ABOUT IT_

I flipped out at a brisket, mustard pizza. I need that in my life
Also glad they are reppin' Detroit style...love Buddies and Jet's...

I do not believe that people actually bought and ate those 4 mustard pizzas
Frank Nowak they do, I work there and when there isn’t mustard out we have to make them because ppl asked for them all the time.. it’s a fan favorite

How many milliseconds did it take you to come up with that 1?
Buddy's in Detroit uses Wisconsin Brick cheese, and the pepperoni goes *under* the cheese to prevent charring. Love to see this style spreading far and wide!
Lions and Tigers and Squares rules. 😎
*Detroit: become Pizza*
I'm gonna Detroit Smash that pizza

after seeing this i sent it to my friends and now this is a go to spot and probably the best pizza i ever had keep the spots coming!
New York is the pizza capital, and I’m sure proud to see my cities (Detroit) pizza being sold in the city that never sleeps.
That mustard pizza is just disrespectful
gtfo
Did your dad walk out on you? Is that why you conduct yourself like a child online? Never had anyone to show you how to be a man?
I was like wtf at first too, but then with the toppings it's like a Reuben Pizza, there's a BLT pizza that's pretty popular around here too, it's not like you have to use tomato sauce, even traditional italian pizza sometimes has white sauce.
It's all about the bread-sauce-toppings mix.
Absolutely not. My first mustard pie taught me that pizza can be different and still delicious. Granted it had loads of pastrami
GOD you sound butthurt buddy.
Mustard pizza? YUK
belia1313 I love it 😘
Mustard is just a spice; there's lots of different flavors and ways of prepping and using it. Also, it's just one flavor in a larger dish - they're naming it "mustard pizza" as a branding element, it seems. In terms of actual ingredients, it's roughly analogous to a hot dog or Ruben sandwich, both of which I happen to enjoy quite a lot.
I love the history behind it, the pan used is because of the factory history behind Detroit.
this makes me soo hungry, Detroit style pizza is one of the best. that and New York style of course.
Its gotta get boring to dress and act like some 60s gangster.
Corrosion37 I’m from New York and this is how Italian New Yorkers actually are lol. The accent and everything
They are not"acting" that's just how they are.. Just because you don't know people who are like this doesn't mean they don't exist.
I would buy their pizza just because these guys are such fun characters 😄
I'm originally from Detroit born and raised. I grew up around the corner from the original Buddy's Pizza, the inventors of this style of pizza. Honestly, we ate at Buddy's only once or twice growing up. We mostly ate the Real Little Caesars before they started doing this $5 cardboard pizza. Little Caesars is from Detroit too. It would take an hour to get our pizza back then in Hamtramck. I never heard of Detroit style Pizza until five years ago here in the Louisville KY area. I called my family and asked, what's a Detroit Style Pizza? No one knew. Then I realized it was Buddy's style Pizza and Little Caesars back in the day. Most true Detroiters (actually from Detroit, not the suburbs) have no idea there is our own style of Pizza. I think it's cool. And those pizzas look delicious.
I need this more than anything right now.
I live in France and have never seen Dijon mustard on a pizza in my life. But I'd try any of these pies!
Mustard pizza doesn't sound at all appetizing but this guy could talk me into it.
I love these guys XD and the pizza looks hella good and interesting, they are not shy about the toppings :P mustard pizza sounds like a crazy thing to try!
These guys are awesome, massive respect to them for honoring other styles of pizza and not shitting on other cities
i was just there and their $5 deep dish cheese pizza was delicious. saw a crew filming there on tuesday and had to go in today to taste their pizza. so glad i did and will be coming back to try their new vodka sauce pizza.
those two are a couple of characters, and the pizza looks great.
The rusty pans really bring out the flavor.
UberNeuman That isn't rust, it's the patina of a seasoned pan. A well oiled, seasoned pan gets keeps the food from sticking, enhances flavor, and creates a beautiful color all through repeated use.
I grew up in Detroit, Detroit pizza are some of the best.
had this for the first time yesterday. it was incredible.
"Sauce is da boss" - who remember?
That is on my list when i'm in NYC!
That garlic butter sausage one makes me want pizza so much right now.
I think this might be the first food I've seen on here I actually wanted to try.
I love the pizza videos! My favorite!!!!
love their accents and so want to try these pizzas. keep seeing these TRUE deep dish pizzas but none in my area
the small pan adds so much more flavor to the crust!!!
the sausage with maple syrup is a great idea. I've been thinking about doing a breakfast-style pizza. I think what I'm going to do is use a little cinnamon and syrup on the dough before I lay down the sauce. Or I could make maple sausage; I think that will prove to be the best way.
The name Lions, Tigers and Squares is so effing genius...
wish it was actually in detroit! but im rly glad to see the style go around everywhere :)
My first job was at Cloverleaf Restaurant, the place started by Gus Guerra. I've eaten my weight in DSP ever since. This New York take on the pizza from my town looks amazing!!
