2.5 lbs sounds heavy, but it replaces 4 lbs of separate devices by combining them into one unit. Plus it saves weight and logistics because there's only one set of batteries to keep up with instead of 3 or 4 different kinds of battery to supply and carry around.

You should watch the garand video on it even if it’s on your own time, he actually shows you all the features and how to use them, and you get some great footage through the tube
It also shows, at least to my eye that since the Task and Purpose video Vortex has managed to make the system at least a little bit less bulky, if not less weighty.
Its capabilities also remove the need to some bits that special operators have been sticking to their guns out front on the handguard, so it's weight needs to be evaluated in that context. Weight nearer the body is far easier to manage than out on the barrel.
The rep said some features will remain classified for quite some time.

I'd definitely check out the GarandThumb one, while he does get hands on as you said, he also has a representative from Vortex, which is the company that makes it, that goes over basically everything they're allowed to say publicly. Task & Purpose's video is solid, but when you see the GarandThumb video, you'll see the one in this video was an early version of it compared to where it's at now.
One thing to note though about the weight. While yes this scope will be a bit heavier than a normal scope, with it having the laser rangefinder and designator, it negates the need for a PEQ unit, so you're basically moving the weight around more than just adding weight.

The sight (with the computer I believe) costs upwards of 10k, with most of that cost obviously being from the computer itself. It’s damn expensive

It was a 2.7 billion dollar contract, and they were supposed to make as many of 250,000 of them. So that would work out to just shy of $10,800 per unit as a best case scenario. By the time they make 250,000 of them, though the cost per unit will likely be less than half of that so depending on the markup for the civilian market and the demand it might be a few thousand dollars or it might be tens of thousands. One thing is for certain though, someone in Texas will hook it up to chatgpt and be smoking feral hogs at a couple miles with an ai fire control system.
Vortex is great, have the best warranty in the business. Have two of their scopes and one pair of binoculars. Fairly cheap compared to most, will fix and replace broken items no questions asked (at least in the past) and i love their LPVO line up.
This actually isnt the scope that won the contract. This is L3Harris’s applicant that was beaten out by Vortex’s applicant for the contract. They do essentially the same computation but the Vortex is a 1-8x and this one was only 1-6x. The vortex also has an integrated IR/VIS laser aiming module so it eliminates the need to have a PEQ on the rifle.

I have never seen a single picture of anyone carrying the M16 by its handle/sight. I find it even funnier when you picture a bunch of soldiers carrying around their weapons like suitcases 😂

The carry handle on the m16 was originally not meant for that use. The first iterations of the rifle had a top side charging lever. When it was moved the gap where it was before became the carry handle
This scope re-contextualizes many of the concerns about the added size and reduced ammo carrying capacity of the 6.8 round. With it, a soldier will not need to move nearly as far to close with the enemy to reach a range where he can reliably hit and kill, and he will need to expend far fewer rounds per enemy neutralized. Suppressive fire with infantry rifles will be de-emphasized and left almost entirely to the squad machine gun while the rest of the squad, rather than rapidly maneuver to close to a distance where they can kill, just use the scope to score reliable first shot hits, and the size and lethality of the 6.8 round ensures that those first shot hits become first hit kills.
Or that is how it's supposed to work in theory at least. How it will pan out in practice is a whole other story, but at least now with this scope in the equation, I feel like the entire NGSW program makes sense.
If I had this scope back in the days of the late 60's - 70's, being a shooter for that 5-sided building, I really would have been more lethal than I already was. It is now confirmation that your mid-range "reach out and touch someone" weapon system is wicked.
Barrett and other companies make and sell scopes that have laser rangefinders, adjust for atmospheric conditions, cant and bullet weight and caliber. Some have still picture and video capability some have night vision and thermal, but none of them combine all of that.
Vortex goes way beyond that as it can also program up to 10 targets and then process them in or out of order. Some features will be classified for some time.
The original design of the AR-10 and AR-15 had charging handles on top of the receiver to be ambidextrous. The "carry handle" is actually there to keep the charging handle from getting blocked. (The AR-10 was chambered in .308/7.62, the AR-15 is a shrunken version of the AR-10 for 5.56).
Another reason the Marines were accused of war crimes was the match grade 77 grain Open Tipped Match ammo they got from the SEALs and Special Forces which were super accurate and retained velocity at range, which also increased their lethality further than the regular issued ammo, M855, which is based on SS109.
To get old school, Roman vs Picts...There will be an alien race out there that's so advanced, we'll roll up with our 1.5 gigawatt laser rifles and they've got blue paint that stops lasers. :)

You’re gonna watch Mr.Thumb. It’s a newer video with actual hands on with info not known at time of Task and Purpose video. Also units are expected to cost $10k per.
Vortex is a very popular brand in the US and their products are widely avalible in most sporting goods stores like Cabelas and Bass Pro. Some of their optics are really good and can often cost in the thousands. I believe most of their high end glass comes from Japan and/or Germany.
Vortex scope is really good it is also on sale here in japan for airsoft gun or hunting use, very clear and the eye relief is insanely small then other ones!
I think Vortex uses Japanese glass, so that tracks.
The civilian version has been used for pig hunting for a few years it's connected to your cell phone

I know their's a lot of people who were, and are hoping that you will react to more Demolition Ranch. Mat, is a good person, with a great personality, and gives out a lot of Info. And has a fantastic variety of weapons, and competitive shooting, and testing real armor, and different armor made by subscribers. It's interesting, and a lot of fun.
Vortex sells scopes commercially. They make good stuff with no questions asked warranty but their commercial scopes are made in China while this scope is not.
Vortex (who won the competition) also has a podcast on their channel where the program manager was able to talk at length about the final design.

I like the features, but I don't think they are as useful to someone on patrol or actively assaulting a position. The feature great for someone in a fixed position.

You should check out Garand Thumb’s video on it. He uses it and shows it off a bit and you get to look through the optic there. Also the module on top is already smaller on the version he shows. Would be a good watch
This is a smart version of the scope that the new British rifle uses. And the company that made the stock, grip, magazine, and the M-lock attachment system on the new British rifle has made an aftermarket scope mount that allows scopes to be upgraded into smart scopes (albiet for the civilan security and sporting market but still). But even if the MOD doesn't want to buy that, they can still just by a rangefider/ballistic computer to fit on the railspace the mini red-dot is sitting on, which is what that tiny rail section is meant for, and move the dot sight to a 45° offset like US soldiers do.
You definitely have to do the Garand Thumb video as they let him shoot with it, and the Vortex rep explained the features.
Personally, task & purpose is like my favourite channel to go over current military equipment.
Now the average infantryman can have the same pleasure I got to indulge myself in when I was a tank gunner on the Abrams. It's basically the same thing we have but bite sized, I'm so curious to see how the display interface looks like.
An ACOG costs ~$1500 on average, some models are close to $2000. Could definitely see this new optic at around the five grand mark too.

Vortex is a fairly new player in the optics field. They have made a name for themselves as a major player in the field. They make a range of products, from budget focused to premium teir. With various optic types that span a price point from $150-4000, which is a wide span.
They sell to civilian and government agencies. Unless their is an agreement with an agency for a special model that can only be sold to that agency, they don't gate sales.
Good warranty... Lifetime no fault warranty. They will repair or replace any of their optics, even if the damage was your fault.
This video, I think, is for a different entry into the optic selection competition. Garand Thumb goes over the Vortex version that was the one actually selected as the new optic. There will be similarities, of course.
There is a standard scope reticle that works without the electronics, but the computer can create a new aiming point using an embedded screen to project it into your field of view.
It's funny, as Vortex is well known in the US for affordable, effective scopes with lifetime no questions asked warranties. Not the highest quality at the lower end, but in the running for "best bang for your buck." A step up from the low-end Burris and Bushnell optics at or below that price range. They have much higher-end options, for which the price balloons, but I'd wager that, up to this point, their primary market lies in the $300-$800 price range. Primary Arms and Leupold compete in that price range, and Leupold is pretty much competitive up throughout all their product lines. Past that, a lot of folks start looking at other brands known for better quality glass, then you hit the crazy brands like Nightforce and Zeiss where scopes start running $1500+. I want to say I heard some numbers saying these new scopes were projected to cost somewhere around $6-8k when they make it to the civilian market, but, tbh, I may be pulling that number out of the ether.
Before saying about the weight of the NSGW and optic, look at the weight of the M1 Garand or the BAR that soldier carried in WWII, without optics. And yes, given time, weights will come down.
First impressions are it looks a bit bulky and heavy, but then considering stuff like the range of devices they were testing throughout the late 80's to the mid 2000's with programs like Land Warrier, including optics which were as bulky, if not more, this actually seems like a tidy package in comparison to the force multiplier it offers.
If you can get your first shot on target and drop the enemy early in the firefight, it essentially negates that "whoever fires more rounds wins" rule by denying the enemy the opportunity to continue firing at you, almost like when the M1A1 Abrams tanks in the Gulf War were completely outranging the older Soviet era tanks of the Iraqi Army, with so much better night fighting capability than the few Iraqi tanks that only had older and obsolete night vision systems.
These new rifles the US are getting may result in less ammo carried, but with this scope should result in less ammo expended overall so it should balance out.
I think this video is more the L3 scope, but the Vortex scope won I think. They look similar and do similar stuff. Garand Thumb did a video on the actual scope. When people talk about going to a larger caliber, I think they are not thinking of the NGSW as a whole package. It’s not only this crazy pressure 6.8mm round, but this scope as well. It gives the shooter the ability to make 1st round impacts out as far as the round can. So I only have 20rd mags, but I’m drilling my target at say 800m every time. I literally point and click and I’m on target. As opposed to 5.56mm and a LPVO at say 600m. Where if I am a decent marksman I’m hopefully in the general area of the target so I can suppress them.
It's got a built in rechargeable battery that also acts as a battery pack to plug in white lights and other things that use USB.
You should definitely check out the Ohio Ordnance REAPR. A lot of people have been talking about the SIG M250, but everything I've seen from the REAPR makes me think it could be an even better choice for the military's new belt fed.
Vortex is making some of the best LPVOs out there, as far as I know.

Vortex scopes are decent. People would still put many of the established names above their top of the end line, think budget and budget high end. Very popular with the civilian market as they have a no questions asked warranty (transferable), though I'm sure they'd like a good story. It's basically you contact them with a broken scope and they'll make it right. Street prices are generally 25-30% lower than MSRP and active military/ first responders and retired military get a 40% discount.
What I know about life is that technology improves faster and faster in any technology like guns or sights for guns but yeah from my understanding technology will get faster better just over all it's simplistically pretty much
I hope you'll check out Garand Thumb's RM277 video, it's a really interesting rifle with some truly next-gen capabilities and design elements that might've taken the NGSW contract had they supplemented it with a proper GPMG at the same time.
Garand thumb has the better video for seeing it in action. This optic is a gamechanger, honestly.
My concern is how fast the reorientation time is. How fast can the operator switch from a target at 800 meters to one at 400 meters on a different bearing, etc.

I'm glad you checked out the Task&Purpose vid; they really get into the entire scope of the project, while GarandThumb gets into more in depth personal usage side of things. They both touch on great things the other channel doesnt typically get into, and all of it interesting to people like me who enjoy looking at the entire scope (hur hur, get it?) of a piece of kit.

Yes Vortex make a wide range of optics and give the best warranty in the business. I have a couple vortex scopes for hunting and practical tatget as well as binoculars ( yes guns in the UK )
Infact just got a day night scope ( not vortex) that has some of the fearures of the us new scope including laser rangefinder and built in ballistics but slso can see in the dark with IR ( not usfull for military but good for foxes) and zoom to 28x. All for £850
The British scope is a normal glass optic tho top spec
The US one is something else yes it has a computer and lots of bells and whistles .... But is still a solid glass optic at it's center which will operate fine with the computer off of out battery .
Saw a speculated cost for each optic being around $10k USD each. Based on the 20 million minimum contract up to a 2.7 billion maximum contract. Very curious how accurate these predictions will be.

How many menu's do you have to go through to get where you need to be, very high chance of pressing a wrong button or setting, people screwing with eachother messing things up. So many things that can and most likely will happen.
And when something happens or go's wrong and people have to do something themself (think or just react) they dont know what to do.

The carry handle in the M16 stopped being used as a handle after Vietnam. When I was in basic in early 2007 we'd actually get smoked if we carried it by the handle.

it was the trigger guard for what was the top mounted charging handle on the original AR-10

Vortex scopes are high quality scopes. Your basic model is about 200 bucks your high end is up to 1 grand to 5 grand for scopes. I would say this is easily 30 grand with new technology

This tech jump I’d imagine was like in the battle of 73 Easting in Iraq in the inital invasion when the new US Abrams tank with top secret sensors FLIR, advanced night vision , laser range finders /targeting /computer fire systems adjusting the aim per all that took on one of the largest tank militaries on earth but Russian T series tanks lacking any of this new tech. In the dust & fog of the Iraqi nights a much smaller force of Abrams moved to a position the Iraqis didn’t worry about becasue of environment , conditions , being nighttime & distance , a posistion no military would move MBTs too & all militaries almost had a wait till daylight for tank battles but the new American Main Battle Tank took this posistion & obliterated the much larger Iraqi battalion that staying out of accurate range of the Soviet tanks and most were completely masked by dust/sand /fog not being seen at all but the tank commanders could see right through all the elements perfectly with exact distances & the fire control system adjusting the shot to score perfect hits all in the dark. Not a single Abrams was hit or lost in the battle but meaty the entire force of T series tanks , armed APCs etc were wiped out in an amount of time that was long impossible just a year earlier. The same use of the top secret M-117 Nigh Hawk stealth attack jets no one knew existed & first ever stealth aircraft that flew into Iraq and right into Baghdad , then , THE most heavily guarded city on earth with the largest amount of anti aircraft guns, radars , SAM missile systems of any city in the world , one no one thought any military would ever try to fly into or every attempt to get to the city but these first few F-117’s flew into Iraq all the way to Baghdad even making a dry pass first run to verify targets and then releasing the new Precision guided bombs that hit with an accuracy rate that equates to only 25% of munitions dropped but accounted for 75% of all successful hits. The Iraqi air defense operators never got a single alarm they were over head or knew until the first bomb hit taking out their communications hub /radars /towers. The squadrons of F117’s flew in and out decimating the most critical targets without losing a single stealth fighter and never being seen visually or on radar. Massive cheat code just like the new AH-64 Apache and all its then top secret sensors and the hellfire missle they could manually guide to its target watching the nose cameras feed on the missile wiping out the largest convoy of military vehicles destroyed in a conflict ,..and doing it at night from several miles away . The absolutely shockingly short dismantling of the 4th largest military on earth win jsut a couple weeks was due to these new inventions of war giving the US an edge that some countries including iraq said was war crime worthy it was so one sided & the US still today gets flack about the massive overmatching / decisive victory with nearly no loss of US personel lives & those people forget that Iraq wasn’t a 3rd world military , it was #4 in the world & the US was not looked at as a top super power going into it this the massive coalition thought would be needed.
I think the the initial dismantling of the Iraqi military because of tech is the same gauge of what a next conflict will be when every battlefront war fighter in the US Army & Marine corpes has these optics. Imagine this in Afghanistan where the M4 & ACOG were relatively useless at the engagement distances. Unreal!
