  • Serve " WALDORF SALAD" as a scrumptious appetizer or a light meal. This apple, celery & walnut, dressed in mayonnaise, dish was first presented at the New York City famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the late 1800's. American's & the BIG APPLE are still eating it today. Click on "Show more" below for this recipe...
    15 minutes to make
    CLASSIC WALDORF SALAD
    1-2 apples, red-skinned, sweet & crunchy
    1/2 cup celery, thinly sliced
1/2 cup grapes, sliced in half (substitute w/ 1/4 cup raisins)
1/2 cup walnuts, slightly toasted (substitute w/ pecans or almonds)
3 tablespoons mayonnaise (substitute w/ yogurt or sour cream)
    1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt & fresh cracked black pepper
    Fresh Lettuce
In a large mixing bowl add diced apples and toss with fresh lemon juice. Add celery, grapes, salt and pepper. Toss until well combine. Add mayonnaise. Toss until apple mixture is coated well.
Add nuts (right before serving) to WALDORF SALAD, toss well, and serve on a bed of lettuce.
    Serves 4
TIPS: Store salad in airtight container in refrigerator up to 1 day.

I am a meat and potatoes kind of guy but I could eat a whole mixing bowl full of waldorf salad. I've had a craving for it about a week now and this recipe looks like what I used to get at a little cafe I went to years ago. Pretty excited to make it.

Great recipe Deronda! I’m making it tomorrow, but because I’m British, I’m going to use walnuts because they’re more readily available here. I didn’t know that you could add red grapes 🍇? Luckily, I bought some yesterday, so I’m all set to prepare it for lunch tomorrow! Thankyou so much for the recipe 😀 Sending my very best wishes to you and your family from The Peak District in the Heart of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Waldorf Astoria use Granny Smith apples. Pecans are a fine substitute according to a chef at Waldorf Astoria Hotel. They actually use a combination of yoghurt and sour cream now. I want some of this now. Great served with pork chops or pan fried chicken.

I like this version of Waldolf salad, because it is comfortably just like the original. (celery, apples, grapes, raisins, chopped walnuts, mayonnaise, or vanilla flavored yogurt) But I don't put salt and pepper in mine. But I just wanted to compliment you, because I watched a chef's video of Waldolf salad, before yours, and it was scary! This guy really acted like he thought he was right about everything, and he actually altered the original recipe, to customize it, passing it off as though it was the ONLY way to do it! Boy, the "professional" chefs must really let it go to their heads, when they think they can reinvent recipes, and be arrogent about it.
Miss Deronda, I do use a little bit more mayonnaise, or substitute vanilla yogurt than you do though, because I like it more moist.
But I'm still basicly on your side, in agreement with how you do it. You and I were taught old-school right. ☺

All is correct except salt and pepper, which is a monstrosity. If ppl want to s&p their privates at the table, let them do so when no one is around. Also, the original recipe calls for quite a bit of sugar. In the nibbling amount she is making, that would be an addition of about half a sneeze of sugar. Jesse what a plague it would be to starve for turkey day at her place. Bet she only has an outhouse.

Your recipe, albeit fine, is not so classic. I think that the original Waldorf-Astoria salad used celery root, not celery stalks. And that makes some difference, don't you think? Besides, the celery and apples should rather be julienned, although some people might prefer the texture of cubed fruit.

    • @Foods101withDeronda
      @Foods101withDeronda  Před 9 lety +6

+sulaco33 You said, "I think" in your above comment that the original Waldorf-Astoria salad used celery root, not celery stalks. I know the original Waldorf-Astoria salad used cubed fruit and celery stalks!! Julia Childs introduced us to julienned...long after the Waldorf Salad was created. Although, ENJOY however you like!! -Deronda :)
