My grandparents lived in West Philadelphia. So did Sonny Liston. When I was young, my grandfather was going to the neighborhood butcher shop one day when I was visiting, and he took me along. A quiet but giant man (I was probably five years old, every adult was a giant) was also there. He had ordered a ham, and when he reached to get this big ham, it disappeared into his gigantic hands. When he left, my grandfather told me, "That was Sonny Liston. Did you see his hands?"
He once knocked out a guy in 70 seconds, and that guy lost 7 teeth in the short time he was in the ring. He hit the guy with a left, and the guy spun 360 degrees. Liston didn't celebrate or grin or raise his arms, his expression never changed. Liston was a terrifying person. He didn't have an entourage or a dance, he just exuded menace.
And he was 6 foot 1 inch and weighed only 195 pounds.
215*
Thank you for including jack Dempsey on this list, and in a fitting spot. People so often overlook the man, or just bring up the loaded gloves argument, but even taking Willard out of the equation, the man had that power!
Legend never forgotten
Fun fact mike Tyson had to register his own fists as a weapon when he went to Wyoming
😂😂
Can't believe people still believe this myth about martial artists and boxers needing to "register" their hands as weapons. Guess people are dumber than I expected.

Here's a ridiculous fact: People always talk about how 6'4" Jon Jones has a freakishly long reach at 84" but Sonny Liston had the exact same reach but was only 6'0" tall. He was a 6 foot tall man with the reach of a man who is 7 feet tall.
Genetics 😬

He didn't lol. His reach was blown out of proportion to promote the Ali fights.
My little brother is 6'1" and has an 84" inch reach. I am 6'2" and only have a 74" inch reach. I won't fight him anymore.

In the documentary "Facing Ali", I think it was Ron Lyle who said that getting hit by Joe Frazier is like being hit by a ford pinto traveling 80 mph, and getting hit by foreman is like being hit by a mac truck traveling 30. And that foreman had the kind of power where you didnt FALL after being hit, but rather the ground came UP to meet you.

Dont use the Lords name in vain its blasphemy repent he loves you
One advantage of age is that I saw most of these men box. I saw Ernie Shavers hit men so hard that they froze before they collapsed. I was at his first fight with Jimmy Young and he hit Young so hard he couldn't move his arms or legs for a few seconds. I saw a replay of their 2nd fight and I thought Young won that match but it was ruled a draw. I also thought he beat Ali and if you have the time go and watch the fight. Back in the 60s and 70s, there were a number of great Philly boxers but Jimmy Young was one of my favorites because he and I were the same age. His story is like many former boxers a tragic one
I think hes so underrated. Definitely got robbed in a few fights. Should be remembered as an all time great. And i say that as a 24 year old lol

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
To all who are confused why Muhammed Ali is not included, he was know for his increnible footwork, he outplayed the enemy and drained his stamina he wasn't weak but not very strong he is an artist of boxing
Edit: sheesh i am famous
Well said, as a boxer he is know for his great footwork he waited for the moment his opponent would make a mistake. Unlike most boxer back then it was just unseen in the boxing world. Most boxer would just work on there body & there punch power but ali made it a hole new bar park.
I wasn’t confused about that, but I don’t know why Sugar Ray Robinson isn’t on the list, he literally killed a man with his left hook.
He was not a hard puncher ! He wore you out with jabs, then it took him about ten punches before you went down !
Ali didn`t plant and hit heavy punches, that was not his style He had a super fast jab, and got hit by the hardest hitters in boxing history, Absorbed heavy body blows and hits to his chin. His speed and reflexes and many others tactics made him the best boxer in my opinion.

Shavers lowered the resolution of many fighters in the ring!
There are only 2 men to ever take Shaver's best punches repeatedly and win easily over him.
Muhammad Ali was knocked effectively unconscious by concussion in the 2nd round or so of their fight, and fought the next 12+ rounds on auto-pilot, winning easily.
Larry Holmes got hit by his best shot and got up immediately. Holmes could take any punch.

When he threw punches they looked painful. Like being hit with a tree.
@@0tt0z the most ridiculous thing that I could never fathom is how effortless some of his punches looked that absolutely disconnected heavyweights from their consciousness. In my opinion if every boxer ever would hit a device to see how many Newtons of force they could deliver, regardless of KO stats, Foreman hands down would be at the top, with likes of Shavers, Liston, Tyson, Lyle and Tua not far behind.
Foreman wasn't the hardest puncher (earnie shavers) hit harder foreman was tough but very slow.
@@BritishGuy1979 Wrong. Just plain no
. I am a big Ken Norton fan, met him about 20 years ago, followed his boxing career as a little kid, Love the guy. He matched up well against Ali, was actually faster than Ali (when he fought him, and again, it is all about matchups- not saying he was better- he was not). No way in hell did Norton hit harder than Foreman. Sly Stallone hired Shavers as a consultant when he was making Rocky. Sly wanted to know what it felt like to get hit by a true heavyweight and Shavers refused to hit him. Sly begged him so Shavers hit him 50% power in the body. Sly said that’s the closest he’s ever come to death and it hurt to breath for a week.

In '73 Ken Norton broke Ali's jaw. He was rated #3 hardest puncher at the time behind, #2 George Foreman, and #1 Ernie Shavers. In the Olympics, George Foreman knocked out a 6'5 Russian with a body shot. It was a tough time to be a heavyweight contender.
I watched Holyfield - Old Foreman fight, and Holyfield spent the whole time backing away from the pot bellied Old George. If Holyfield had dared to stand toe to toe with Old George he could have been KO'd, and he knew it.
Holyfield sure has a lot of respect for George. He said one runaway jab from old George left him wondering if his teeth were still there.
Every boxer that ever beat Foreman did so by running away from his power (or covering up...Ali...) and boxing him. Nobody traded shots with him and stayed upright.
But boxing is not about standing toe to toe and trading shots, so Holyfield won easily.
@@michadebicki6534 I wouldn't call it easy. Foreman hurt Holyfield pretty bad in at least 3 different rounds. Foreman gave Holyfield a harder time than Tyson did.
@@michadebicki6534 Yeah, the fight was kind of a joke, but my point is Holyfield was visibly afraid to let slow Old George get close because he knew he'd get hurt if he did, and Old George could take anything he dished out, so he wore him out by keeping on the move in a mostly backward direction. Even past his prime Old George was dangerous. I was hoping Holyfield would slip up and get his back to the ropes, but no such luck for Old George.
Nice video, well done👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The most explosive ko power ever Julian "The Hawk" Jackson!
He knocked ppl out cold with his short hooks.
What was even more amazing was Marciano had the shortest reach of any heavyweight champion of his time. His reach was just 67" which explained why he had to use a crouching style.
