I love it, I’ve fought people to have it. My only issue is the surprising lack of swirl
I just switched from Canon after 20 years of shooting their cameras and lenses to Sony. One of my first Sony lenses I got was the FE 85mm f1.8 and its probably the best "cheap" 85mm I have ever used. Its sharp, even in the corners, small and light and has great bokeh. It's a tad dated, especially if I compare to my Sony FE 20mm f1.8 G but the size I just love. I thought about buying the 85GM but after much research learned its not really any sharper then this lens. So I will keep this little 85mm until Sony releases a Mark II of the 85mm GM which I am sure is on its way.
Absolutely agree. I love this lens!
Wait for the rumoured GM 85mm f1,2 hope it's coming soon
That would be cool, though ended up getting the Sigma ART after trying out the Sony GM f1.4 and hating it. The sigma is deadly sharp so I am good. Though the 50mm f1.2 GM is literally a reason I switched to Sony. @@johnadams3038
Love the format
Thanks Eli!
great video! two points: in the end you mention that the most important feature is the low price, "even if this means omitting some of the mentioned features". well, this is exactly that lens ;) cheap yet great!
another point is that the current 85/1.4 GM lens costs nearly 4x times the price - and has a FAR worse AF than this cheap little gem. i think this should be noted, so that viewers know where that lens sits on the market.
Thanks for sharing!
I've just brought a brand new Sony 85mm f/1.8 for my A7, excellent lens and very sharp indeed well pleased.
Love ur videos dude💯💯
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoy them!
thx for vid
The 85 is a beast🔥
Certainly is!
If Sony adds aperture ring, it could become a G lens = heavier and expensive. Actually for 85mm, most situations we use max f1.8 only for portraits
Absolutely!
I have the 85 1.8 and the 35 1.8 for my Sony A7C.
Honestly - perfection if a update does come out I doubt I'll upgrade
It’s certainly more than capable at the moment!
Also have an A7C and just wanted to share the love about that.. you like that 35mm more than a 50mm? Was that a tough choice? I just ordered the 85mm
I just ordered mine today.. this will be my first lens other than the kit lens my camera came with.. and after watching a bunch of vids it seems like it’s still very worth it to buy.. but I won’t know officially until next week.. thanks for the vid and yes I also hope new lens come in cheap models and not just GMaster prices omg kill me
Awesome! Have fun with it!
@@LucasJohnsonFaustino How many feet you have to go back for a full body shot? I intend to use it for couples.
verdict? and autofocus speed?
Your colors 👌🏽
Thank you. That means a lot
Great lens it seems, but some fringing in certain situations, but I usually can correct it in software. With nature shots it's easy to fix, but taking pics of a raw aluminium bike it's too crazy for Rawtherapee, so Gimp and two versions and mask solves it. But maybe this is unavoidable? I got mine second hand. I manually focus most of the time, but if I would shoot action autofocus is nice, but I can just track and object I guess unless it's something I can't just track. I got my lens second hand, so was a nice price, a few scrapes, but works.
I like the small size, it fits well in my back pack, i ride a mountain bike, and have it in my backpack, I use it on an A7 IV. Not too heavy. Nice combo to get around with. Some might think I am crazy for riding with such camera, but I got a back protector covering the camera.
Awesome!
@@LucasJohnsonFaustino I see the fringing seems to be gone if I shoot in around F4.0.
Btw I’m from NZ and buying this lens you can only order it from Auckland city.. and on the phone today that shop now only has two left.. “photogear” I just purchased mine
Wow. lucky!
hi im a beginner does this lens only have 1.8 aperture or i can increase it?
U can increase it
35mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 packaged in the same body as the 20mm f1.8G. Bumped up to 800usd will make a lot of people think to upgrade! :)
For sure! Totally agree!
I like this lens but the rendering is bland and flat
What do you mean by rendering? 🤔
cheapest way to get in to a 85mm is mikes one not the sony
That's a cinema lens.
A 6 year old lens is old? 🤣
Older than a new lens!
