    Had the first version of the Samyang, great lens but I never used it that muh.
    Got a kid and now I need an 85mm again, I think I'll try the Sony. Smaller and lighter means much more to me than 1.4 vs 1.8. Usualy shoot portraits at F/2 -F/4 anyways.

    Well look... I have both (had)... IQ wise Samyang is a much better lens... But it fell down from my bag on the floor, 30cm height drop. And after that it started to give a front focus issue. Repair man said that it's impossible to fix because everything inside is made from plastic.
    My Sony though fell from a bar table once (1m) and still survived, despite having a visible dent on it.

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
    03:49 *Autofokus funktioniert gut in guten Lichtverhältnissen, leicht verlangsamt in schlechten Lichtverhältnissen, jedoch ohne signifikante Jagd. Beide Linsen liefern scharfe Bilder in High-Speed-Modus.*
    04:55 *Samyang gewinnt den Bokeh-Test mit größeren, weicheren Bokeh-Kreisen. Beide zeigen jedoch Focus Breathing. In Flare-Test schützt Sony besser gegen Geisterbilder.*
    06:02 *Beide Linsen liefern hervorragende Porträts ohne Farbstiche.

    Great video as usual Tom! I'm wondering if I got a bad copy. Mine had a yellow tint and lots of problems autofocusing... Problems that most people had with version 1 but not Mark II. I returned it because I was unwilling to part with my Sony 1.8, considering it autofocuses very well. My 135 and 35 (both rokinon series Ii) are phenomenal and I have you to thank for opening the world of Samyang optics to me!

    1.4 vs 1.8....yes, is a bit less sharper,....but you should have put the Samyang also at 1.8 to see if it is equally sharp or sharper than the sony, at 1.8. Thank you for the review, I have the Samy at preorder...no idea when will be shipped.

    • @pawelmod3292

      usually, you are comparing the lenses with their maximum apertures and separately, with their maximum common aperture. For me, if you are paying for 1.4 lens you want to see performance on 1.4 aperture. Additionally, sharpness of the lens is way overrated these days. There is so much more :)

    • @charruaporelmundo
      @charruaporelmundo Před 2 lety +2

      @@pawelmod3292 Yes, of course you must compare it at 1.4, but if you are comparing it with a lens that’s only f1.8. You must put it at equal aperture too. And I completely agree about the sharpness thing. I have seen a few German channels and they go through that too with many images.

    What a dilemma! I watch this video, as well as other comparative videos between the 85mm Samyang F1.4 II , the Sony 1.8 and the Sigma 1.4, every time I watch one I switch my preference for the next lens ;)... They have all so distinctly and cleary their pros and cons, that basically you can't really go wrong with either lens. If I was living off photography, I'd go for the Sigma no doubt. But I'm not, and so it is really not evident to make a decision because you move from one lens to the next one and you find pros/cons you clearly don't have with the other one...

      @@TomCalton Thank you Thomas. My cousin has a copy of the Sigma 85 f1.4 for Sony. I am going to borrow it from him for a few weeks. If I get the results I am looking for, I will go ahead and get one.
      I am getting the Sigma 85 and possibly the Samyang 135 f1.8 for a specific project. My Tamron 70-180 f2.8 although insanely sharp for a lens of this focal length does not give me the bokeh effect I am aiming for. My initial test images shot at f2.8 with the Tamron are fantastic. I think they will look even better with the Sigma/Samyang combo shot wide open.

    I don’t really get why people don’t like plastic. Cheaper, lighter, and more durable.

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  Před rokem +2

      People think plastic = cheap/poor quality/cost cutting. When in actual fact most high quality plastic lenses like this are actually made from a composite material, which is not only strong and lightweight, but can be better when dealing with sudden changes in temperature - it doesn't expand and contract as much. The guys at Sigma told me a while back that their new lenses now favour this composite material because of this reason, plus others.
