One way to glue and hang a jigsaw puzzle

  • In this video I show you one of my favorite ways to hang a jigsaw puzzle on the wall. I could not find my puzzle glue so I flipped the puzzle over and used wood glue, I was not sure what it would do to the front. I recommend using puzzle glue on the front and only a little bit of glue on the back (spreading it out with a brush - which I forgot to do) to stick it to wood :)
    I would really like to thank Wintergatan for the music. Do not be surprised if you hear a lot more of it in the future. You can find his youtube page below along with a link to his free music :)

      I am not sure it is an original idea but it sure makes taking the puzzle down a lot easier later on :) ... also I used too much glue and I should have spread it out with a brush... Dave, what a brilliant way to glue, and hang a puzzle! I added one hole in the center to add more support to the wall. I used wood glue for it because it is stronger than puzzle glue, and is much cheaper to buy at Lowe's in a larger amount. I used a foam brush to spread the glue out, and it worked great. I didn't use any glue on the front, for it was not needed. I put a piece of 1/4 inch wood over the puzzle, and bricks on the top, so while it dried it would be perfectly level. I also took a picture of the puzzle while I had the 5 pieces removed so if I wanted to take it down in the future, I would know exactly where they were. Great video!

      I am so happy you like this idea Jerome. It is simple and easy. I actually do it with many puzzles because I can hang them up like art, and then by simply removing those four pieces that I do not glue, I can take them down and either put something else up or whatever :)

    All I do is buy a clip frame .
    Most 500 piece jigsaw will fit into a 20" x 16" frame.
    Slide the white side of the sheet of paper ( this comes with the clip frame ) under the completed jig saw , then slice the hardboard backing under the paper , lay the glass ( or perspex ) on top , fit the clips and job done.
    You will end up with a small white boarder around the edges, the side border being slightly wide than the top and bottom.
    No glue required as the puzzle is trapped between the hardboard and glass

    Well done for your video sir. It's a great solution, especially when you have to deal with huge puzzles! I would only add some puzzle glue at front. The wood is MDF? How many cm?

    • @davepuzzled
      @davepuzzled  Před 5 měsíci

      Hi, I’m very sorry for my delayed reply!
      I agree about the puzzle glue on the front, somehow I thought I mentioned this same thing.
      The wood was finely finished plywood but you could use any wood you want. I would just not use too thick of a piece unless you want to put a finish on the sides. This piece is about 1cm thick
      Good luck and please let me know where I can see some of your big puzzles hanging, I’d love to see them!

    What was the wood you used? Luan? Good idea for hanging. That is a little too permanent for me. I'll use a wire on the back like traditional hanging.

    • @davepuzzled
      @davepuzzled  Před rokem +1

      Hi, I am very sorry for my delayed reply. In this video I am using 1/4” plywood. It has a finer finish than many plywoods and I chose that one because the smooth surface ensures a nice even puzzle laying flat against the board

    How would you remove it if you decide to move or you no longer want it there ?

    • @davepuzzled
      @davepuzzled  Před 27 dny

      Hi, if you notice during the glueing there are the four pieces I removed from the puzzle. They do not get glued. So, when you hang the puzzle and attach it to the wall, those spots are open and then you place those four puzzle pieces in their respective places. If, at another time you want to take down the puzzle, you simple pull out those four pieces and then you can unscrew the puzzle from the wall. Maybe I will make a short video to demonstrate that.

    Hi Dave, no idea if you will see this but trying my luck. May I check what type of wood you used for this. Thank you!!!

    • @davepuzzled
      @davepuzzled  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Vanathi, thank you for your question. I am not sure where you are located, but I will show you a couple of options (europe/USA) for what you could use. But, truth be told, any plywood will work. I chose the one I did simply because it can be seen on the side (it is .6cm thick) and I wanted it to look smooth without blemishes. With that said, even with normal plywood, you can sand the sides down for the same effect.
      Here is the one I have used, which I did buy from Bauhaus
      www.bauhaus.es/tableros-de-contrachapado/maderas-daganzo-tablero-contrachapado/p/24122746
      Here is one in the US
      www.homedepot.com/p/Columbia-Forest-Products-1-4-in-x-2-ft-x-8-ft-PureBond-Maple-Plywood-Project-Panel-Free-Custom-Cut-Available-2236/204635459
      They are just examples and I would never pay that much for some backing..
      Whatever you decide to do, please let me know, I want to see for sure what others do to create their puzzles for the world to see

    ❤the video. I have noticed you don’t use glue directly on the topside like a lot of people to preserve over time.
    What’s your professional advice on that?

    • @davepuzzled
      @davepuzzled  Před rokem +1

      Hi, thank you for the great question! I did not glue the front only because I didn`t have puzzle glue and I was not sure what would happen with the glue I was using, as in ,would it damage the colors .
      My advice is find and use puzzle glue and coat it well on the front. You can always add glue to the back to stick it to the board as I did. Also, if you want an extra shiny finish, you could also coat it in lacquer but I would be sure to coat it with the puzzle glue first to protexct the surface.
      Maybe I will do a video on this topic, thank you for the good ides :)

      This is a good idea to make a puzzle stay together to hang. The only thing I think to think about is how to then stick it to the board you want it against.
      What I like about the glue is it adheres both ways and also, gives a nice solid finish to the edges.
      Thank you so much for your idea!!

      DIY shops or a timber yard will cut plywood to size for you at no cost. Pick up some budget sandpaper while you're there and give it a light sand by hand.
      A very basic wheel brace will mean you can easily pre-drill four holes for the screws.
      This project is still easy - irrespective of whether you have power tools or not. Some woodwork purists even run an entire workshop full-time with _zero_ power tools.
