As a Dutchman been to many European games, last year at City a few times, including the championship game. Fantastic atmosphere, nothing wrong with that, but no hysteria or exaggerated hassle, just as it should be, real football fans, but yes everything is different in the rain, a child understands that. In Holland it is much too aggressive, big tunnels, high nets because the supporters are aggressive towards the players, if that is what you are looking for, stay away from England.

As a dutchman ass well i can say its partially true, they put in a other kind of support as the rest of Europe does with. And i liked how the English did it back in the days just chanting and creating a hype on whats happening on the field. But i think we can both agree it isnt what it was anyomore due to toerist coming from all over the world and ridicules prices so that only the rich cabn come in. Those arent people coming from the same area supporting the local team. And thats deffentaly affecting the atmosphere if you ask me. If i look at a top game its deadly silence all game long. Not the same with smaller clubs in England by the way

  • @laederlappen
    @laederlappen Před rokem +76

Not a fair comparison. English football culture has never been about ultras, and the officials have done what they can to kill what's left, with increased prices, assigned seats for every ticket, CCTV etc. Not many ordinary citizens can afford a season ticket to Prem these days. The atmosphere gets better in Championship and below.
Germans copied their football culture straight from Italy, so there is not much is original there. And who cares about Bundesliga, it's such a dead league. No wonder supporters need to entertain themselves.

German fan here. First of all, I really like english atmospheres. It differs from us, but that's not automatically a bad thing. Although I find it sad that pricing is so high that some stadiums are filled with plastic fans and consumers rather than the really passionate ones. That's why I love standing in Germany - many more fans can pay these prices.
Yes, ultra culture began in Italy. But it quickly emerged all over Europe for a good reason. Young people love supporting their team this way. If you think that is "copying", so be it. I am sure though that many english football chants are copied from other clubs aswell... Like everyone does.
German ultra scenes are different than italian ones though. They developed an own style. Like ultras in France, Serbia, Bekgium, the Netherlands and so on all did. Might be the same idea behind it, but the differences are there. And I think that is amazing. Even small clubs here in Germany have creative, amazing small ultras scenes, coming up with their own chants, their own flags, their unique little ideas of how they wanna express themselves. And this makes german football unique for me. Also many groups are active against antisemitism, racism and sexism. This has made stadium experiences in Germany much better over the last 20 years. And this plus a relatively strict separation from hooligans makes german ultras unique.
But again, I like english Atmosphäre aswell! I just think it's sad that there is so much hate and mocking instead of just acknowledging the differences

Interesting video, especially as it was filmed from my section in the Etihad. I was there last night and can see myself a few times in the background. This is a section of the ground where the support varies between PL & CL games - it's a cheaper section and whilst I'm fortunate I could go, a lot of season ticket holders will miss out due to prices and affordability. This is sadly due to the sheer cost of attending any game at the moment for most clubs.
I'd argue if you wanted to really feel the atmosphere, the sections behind the goal next to the away fans are better for this.
We've played three German teams this season and each set of fans have brought great numbers, which I respect. However, there are fundamental differences between how British supporters and continental fans generate an atmosphere. We'll always be behind the team, but the atmosphere will ebb and flow more in line with the match.
I'm not so sure on the Bayern style chanting, it can end up feeling a bit detached from the game. My feeling is the players react more if the atmosphere is building in line with attacks etc, rather than a constant chant - it gets a bit repetitive.

Hahahaha ... good joke. Not a single Premiere League Club has fans, that sing all game long... or "loud" XD. You have to go to lower leagues in England or in any othe country in europe to experience fans, who support their team the whole game.
In every Bundesliga game the stands are atleast half full 1 hour before kickoff and only a few leave early or right with the final whistle. The supporters also sing for at least a quarter hour after the game is over (except for Leipzig and Hoffenheim). And that is in every league game and not just the KO stage in Championsleague.
And you have the audacity to talk big about the shitty fans of your plastic club, that deserves to be excluded from every competition. Your so called "fans" were leaving early in a QF CL match. You are part of the problem modern football has. If you have only a little bit of dignity left, you would stop supporting a club, that is owned by a foreign country - only to sportwash their uncivilized actions. Find a lower league team or atleast a team, that doesn't belong to people who only use the sport for their selfish desires.

I’m a Liverpool fan and also get annoyed by the lack of atmosphere. Having said that I’ve come to realise that the English football is very much a reaction to what is happening on the pitch. The game against Arsenal was also quiet until there was an incident and then the crowd came to life. There is more emotional attachment, having said that I also love the German fans, they’re so organised and full of vibrancy and energy. English fans should try and emulate their Germany counterparts and create a group of supporters who are responsible to keep the atmosphere alive!

I think coming to the etihad and just slating us is a bit ridiculous I can’t lie. The atmosphere at the etihad is so hard to generate because we have one singing section. Obviously I wish we could do all the pyro and displays but often ideas just get knocked down by the club for ‘safety reasons’. We had a big tifo planned for this game which would have been amazing. But last minute the club cancelled it from under the 1894 groups feet on the basis ‘it was too windy’. If you want to look at the issue with atmosphere, it’s mainly the league or the clubs that water it down so tourists feel a bit better, look at the difference between ALL premier league teams, it’s not just us, and non league teams where there aren’t such strict regulations, and you’ll see it’s not the fans. It’s the higher ups. I went to dortmund this season and the atmosphere was great, I would say more Constant>loud, but the idea of someone in a balaclava and a megaphone starting the chants in England is laughable, and tbh, that I agree with

Didn’t really work out that video for you as you planned I guess 😂
Was expecting a summary at the end on the terrible atmosphere you witnessed but didn’t happen.
You compared the bus arriving to a random video of Betis v Sevilla. We can all pull them videos together for every single fierce derby game across Europe.
I have been to Bayern as an away fan and it is what you like really. Bayern fans are a bit robotic so only chant if someone is banging a drum, otherwise just deathly silence.
You said there was no chanting or supporting the team from the fans, literally what game did you go to!? If you are around the away fans it is pretty standard for their to be back and forth between the sets of fans, but mostly it will be singing City or player related songs.
I would agree atmospheres have become not as good over the years mainly due to Vloggers and tourists taking up a lot of the seats pissing about on their camera all game.
Also over priced tickets for games particularly in the Champions League and Premier League which has unfortunately priced out a lot of core City fans who would have supported them in the tougher times.

Great video! I think something to consider about the English game is the UK government since Margaret Thatcher has done everything in their power to suppress fans. No drinking in football stands but is allowed in every other sport (to curb hooliganism), you can get kicked out of a ground for standing, the police now record everything in the stands so you are treated like a criminal before the ball has been kicked. Sadly these measures have had their intended effect and yet football is still the most passionate sport in the UK. I'm a Leicester fan and our atmosphere has been abysmal all season (but that might have something to do with the lack of results haha). It also helps when fans really have something to go at, LCFC's champions league run was electric and made 32'000 sound like 60'000 (because it was such an event), same goes when I was at Wembley for the FA cup final, covid only allowed 8'000 of each fans and Chelsea had the CL on their minds, we had failed 4 times to win the cup so we made 8K sound like 30'000. It's one of the reasons why supporting smaller clubs has so many benefits, when you dont expect trophies and actually win one it is a feeling like no other.

Quick word about the atmosphere topic: I was always hating on british atmosphere as well. The thought of no organized fans and no ultras was making me think of really dead stadiums. A year ago I went to a premier league game at the Emirates, which I really enjoyed. Although it is something completely different to the organized atmosphere in other parts of Europe or the world, I don’t think that should mean that it’s bad. The fascination of the game in the UK is definitely at least as big as it is in the rest of the world. In the end it is just a question of the football culture in different parts of the world. Just like the atmosphere in South America, Asia or Africa differs as well.
So I think it’s hard to compare these two completely different stadium experiences. And since it’s still the motherland of football, I think we should respect their way of watching the sport.

As an English football fan, the atmosphere comment being embarrassing is wrong on the general level. The article was right, we are the most passionate - teams get 19k on in League 2, with some of the other teams getting around 9k, with teams in the 5th division getting 15k and 10k too on, things you would never see in Europe or the World. In terms of atmosphere, anything under the Premier League tends to be great, with some atmospheres being a lot better than others though, that has to be said. I brought a Polish friend along to a game who said that our (Preston North End) atmosphere was better than at Pogon Szczecins, who is his team and are some of the best ultras in Poland too...and trust me, us PNE fans are certainly not the best fans in England. It's a different culture, sure, the atmosphere goes along with the game and what's going on, but when it's loud, it's loud alright. Proper English fans hate the Premier League, because that isn't proper English football and fans, it's foreign fans or tourist fans, but when you get the proper local fans at the games, which tends to be away games, the fans of Premier League teams are just as good as European ones again. Ive been to many European games and it must be said, the majority of Championship games I've been to have been louder than Mainz V Hannover, that was certainly nothing special, and neither was Valencia or even Benfica. There's a reason why no other national teams fans come close to English fans, both for atmosphere and attendance, because the proper English football fan is passionate and singing all game, and linking back to before, can be highlighted in the times the big teams have come to PNE, you'd expect them to be like at the Etihad, etc, but it isn't the tourist fans attending, it's the proper fans at away games and City, Utd, Spurs are all extremely loud, with this being highlighted when Spurs played Dortmund in Germany and for a good portion of the game, the Spurs fans were the loudest or if not, at least singing and making themselves heard pretty loudly for 90 minutes. I hope this has helped with your understanding of English football, but you have to go to an English derby game such as the Steel Derby or the M55 derby, etc, the proper ones where its all about local community and passion. One last thing, with regard to the chant of what the fucking hell is that, that's just English football banter, fans sing that to us as we have flag displays when the players walk out, Brighton sing that to Palace about their banner as they're rivals, we all think that the displays in Europe and pyros are great, and there's always plenty of displays in England too, but just because we don't call ourselves Ultras as fans, it means it doesn't get recognition.

Admittedly, I havent been to the real loud drum stadiums like Camp Nou or the Bernabeu or even Allianz so I can compare outside england. But those are notoriously loud fanbases anyway. english atmosphere is not chorographed like mainland europe. we dont need cheer leaders with drums or mega phones waving their arms conducting the crowd. we dont need big cartoon looking tifos to try and intimidate the opponents. we dont need to be outside the ground hours before because its our culture to drink and meet in pubs in local housing estates before a match. we pay more than other leagues to watch football which is a shame. but our atomosphere is authentic and spontaneous. im not saying european fans are bad, but its just not the same. planned chorographed atmosphere, parades to the stadium is a bit cringey for me. ive been there. the atmosphere isnt better at all, a lot of the fans dont even watch the game or care. they make it all about themselves.

No one in England thinks we have the best atmosphere since the 90’s and Italy took over. Since then we’ve got worse and the continent has got better. English atmosphere is unique tho, much more reactionary compared to our German/Dutch counterparts who bang their shit drums for 90 mins no matter what - I’m glad we’ve not imported that. I think this guy just has the very stereotypical Dutch inferiority complex - they simply wish they were either English or German, but sadly they’re Dutch
