It was the little things like Andy gesturing to another cop in the background for a cellphone so the kid could talk to her mother that helped make this show so realistic.

Of all the character actors I have seen in the 60 years of watching TV, Dennis Franz was afforded the opportunity by writers and directors to define Andy Sipowicz. I believe the story arc of Andy's experiences to be the quintessential performance by an actor. Franz was right to retire after NYPD Blue because no matter what role he might have taken, he would always be Andy. God bless all who created him.

It was so well delivered over multiple episodes showing how caring Andy was by walking around with him looking for his daughter, checking out the scam artist and the Psychic that preyed on them and then to always be on the lookout for suspects and catches the kidnapper while buying a car for his son. NYPD Blue could have been called the Tragedy of Andy Sipowicz, he lost his child, wife, partners to death and murder and at the end he was in charge of the squad and married to a lovely lady, friends with his 1st wife and had 3 new children. I watch this show at least once a year on Hulu, it's a guaranteed few months of great things to look forward to but I do skip the death of Simone, that tore me up.
