  • Back in 2002, Melvin Bragg asked Ken Russell to do a little something to mark the 25th season of The South Bank Show. Mr Russell decided to remake the drama documentary that he had first done in 1962 for the BBC's Monitor program.

Haven't seen this film for 20 years it's brilliant love it. R.I.P Edward Elgar and Ken Russell. Wish they had good film docs on now instead of unwatchable rubbish.

Superb documentary! It stirs the heart and soothes the senses. Elgar, you should be alive today; England (and the world) hath need of thee.

It's poignant to think that there was a time when ITV made programmes like this, before they decided to throw in the cultural towel and join Sky, etc, etc, for a race to the bottom with reality TV crap. This was further hit home to me last week while watching a programme about Benjamin Britten on BBC4; wile commenting on his 1971 opera Owen Wingrave, they quoted from newspaper reviews of the day and I was stunned to learn that in 1971 both the Daily Mail and The Sun (!) had an opera critic...

But I think his love for Alice was absolutely unquestionable. But you're right, a lovely documentary. :-)

Ken Russell does stir mixed reactions, the one thing you can say is he was never bland. I think he genuinely did love the music of the composers he depicted on film. Admittedly, sometimes it's laid on a bit thick and not too subtly, but personally I forgive him this and thank him for the legacy. If you like this film, check out the Delius "Song of Summer" and the Vaughan Williams South Bank Show episode he did; they'll be around somewhere

The Fairies give far far better account of themselves than the pseudo “giants” who can’t even keep in step with one another [hic😃!]
Beautiful Music! Beautiful production! Thanks a million!
Amen and all Praise to Ken Russel..RIP

Like so many unknown composers they sold the copyrights of their music for pennies the publisher made a fortune Dvorak was the same with his Slavonic dances. However for the 2nd set of Slavonic dances he demanded more money and got it.Always worth watching a Ken Russell film .

You must be thinking of a different composer.
Elgar, the English composer, made a great deal of money through conducting engagements, the sales of his work, and his recordings. Adjusted for inflation, he died leaving an estate worth millions.

Bless him, Ken Russell was too sentimental and he was never subtle with his imagery. A miss opportunity to present a descent documentary on an interesting man and a great composer... Thank you for posting.

Je suis très ému de la parenté de la scène du pique nique avec celle de "Valentino".
Ken Russell avait un don incroyable plus insuffler de la vie dans ses scènes , "Thé boy Friend" est grandiose pour ça , la vie vous y saute au visage !!

I love that tune at about 7:30. It was used as a theme song for some Brit radio program.
