My Heart's in the Highlands
My Heart's in the Highlands is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written by Robert Burns and this version sung so superbly by Kenneth McKellar touches my heart n soul as it reminds me of my youth up in the Highlands of Scotland.

Back in 2002, Melvin Bragg asked Ken Russell to do a little something to mark the 25th season of The South Bank Show. Mr Russell decided to remake the drama documentary that he had first done in 1962 for the BBC's Monitor program. All copyright is retained by the original owners, and no infringement is intended; have uploaded this due to it's rarity.

I love that tune at about 7:30. It was used as a theme song for some Brit radio program.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here; My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer; A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe, My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go. Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow; Farewell to the straths and green valleys below; Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods; Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods. My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here; My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer; A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe, My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go. Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North, The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth; Wherever I wander, wherever I rove, The hills of the Highlands for ever I love. My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here; My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer; A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe, My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Like so many unknown composers they sold the copyrights of their music for pennies the publisher made a fortune Dvorak was the same with his Slavonic dances. However for the 2nd set of Slavonic dances he demanded more money and got it.Always worth watching a Ken Russell film .

You must be thinking of a different composer. Elgar, the English composer, made a great deal of money through conducting engagements, the sales of his work, and his recordings. Adjusted for inflation, he died leaving an estate worth millions.

Je suis très ému de la parenté de la scène du pique nique avec celle de "Valentino". Ken Russell avait un don incroyable plus insuffler de la vie dans ses scènes , "Thé boy Friend" est grandiose pour ça , la vie vous y saute au visage !!

It's poignant to think that there was a time when ITV made programmes like this, before they decided to throw in the cultural towel and join Sky, etc, etc, for a race to the bottom with reality TV crap. This was further hit home to me last week while watching a programme about Benjamin Britten on BBC4; wile commenting on his 1971 opera Owen Wingrave, they quoted from newspaper reviews of the day and I was stunned to learn that in 1971 both the Daily Mail and The Sun (!) had an opera critic...

Ken Russell does stir mixed reactions, the one thing you can say is he was never bland. I think he genuinely did love the music of the composers he depicted on film. Admittedly, sometimes it's laid on a bit thick and not too subtly, but personally I forgive him this and thank him for the legacy. If you like this film, check out the Delius "Song of Summer" and the Vaughan Williams South Bank Show episode he did; they'll be around somewhere

I'm glad Elgar didn't bestow the Prince Hal theme with 'nobilmente' - just 'con anima' or 'grandioso'. There's a school of thought that Elgar felt Hal was a bit of a cad. 'Glorious John' Barbirolli on good form here in this lovely piece. Nice one!
