I get 26mpg+ but have been considering a full mech 6.5 swap with the nv4500 trans. Imo shuld be the offroaders dream setup. Eric, I have a 94 6.5 turbo K3500 truck. It starting having a problem occasionally of not starting and getting worse. Cranking over normally, but not starting. I changed the fuel filter. Didn't help. I noticed two of the injectors are really oily all around them. I removed the air filter box to get a better look at the passenger side and found a lot of oil inside the turbo where the air box connects. Do you think the problem is bad injectors, or something else?

Knew a guy with a coal rolling 24 valve Cummins tuned "for power" when he just wanted to roll coal....and he was bragging about his 1,300-1,500°F EGTs 😳🤦. I laughed to his face and walked off. A year later, his truck was hard starting, had an exhaust manifold leak, turbo was seizing up and you could tell the compression low on at least a couple of cylinders......he REALLY didn't like me laughing at that, but I warned him and Karma bit him in the butt for being a coal rolling idiot that didn't understand how diesel engines work.

      1. I'm guessing he's at less than 300hp.
      2. That duramax would walk all over any 6.5. Theres no comparison between the old style diesels and the new common rail engines. Stock the 6.5 is rated at 180hp and 440 torque, the duramax stock is close to 400hp and over 700 torque.

When the Detroit engineering team were asked themselves about the comparison between the 2 there response as to the pros over the Ford was weight and a slight fuel consumption advantage. When asked about the pro's of the IDI turbo their answer was, and i quote, "but the Ford is heavier"... Lmao

Aaron Hilt, could easily be over 400. I’ve talked with Heath from Heath diesel extensively and the 6.5s can hold 400 with the old block set up as long as you take care of them. His old bonnaville truck is 500 on an old block that has parts from a 6.2 and the truck I’m building now will be around 550. He had 3 shop trucks all between 375-450 hp all stock except for boost which is up around 20lbs. He’s had them for years and they get driven frequently. With the new optimizer 6.5s you can safely run higher egts (to a point) and push more power. Before anyone says anything about them not handling boost that’s b.s. as well. I’ve had mine 303k miles, stock head gaskets and daily driven 160 miles 6 days a week at 25, screw the “can’t go over 12-15 reliably crap. If you ask Heath about the build plan on his Bonnaville truck he will tell you before they went with twin turbo they were thinking of compound turbos upwards of 75lbs of boost. The problem is NO ONE takes care of these engines properly and EVERYONE (myself included) has read online forums from keyboard commandos saying how shit these engines are. If you know the weak spots (harmonic balancer being one on the older blocks) then you can avoid 99% of all the problems they have.
Second issue is they take them to a diesel mechanic to get them fixed and the problem with that is these aren’t dmax or Cummins, they’re a 6.5. Compression is different, boost is different, block is different.
This guy did his research, and took his time building this truck and he did it RIGHT. I can promise you that was up near 400 or more.
Not trying to start a fight, just sick and tired of misinformation everywhere on these things🤙🏽
