Trimble Earthworks Lane Guidance How to Use It

  • In this video, SITECH Intermountain walks through how to use Trimble Earthworks Lane Guidance. Lane Guidance is a feature that helps you create straight, even surfaces by providing visual guidance on your display. To use Lane Guidance, you will need to have a Trimble Earthworks system with a compatible display and a GPS receiver. Once you have the necessary hardware, you can follow these steps to use Lane Guidance:
    1. Open the Trimble Earthworks software and create a new design.
    2. Add the lines that you want to use as your lane guidance guides.
    3. Click on the "Lane Guidance" button in the toolbar.
    4. Select the lines that you want to use as your lane guidance guides.
    5. Click on the "OK" button.
    Lane Guidance will now be enabled for the selected lines. You will see a green line appear on your display that represents the center of your lane. As you move your machine, the green line will move with you. You can use the green line to help you create a straight, even surface.

    Can this be done with a pad for building a 5' offset from the edge of the building to build out for the slab

      Lane guidance doesn’t work well when the line is a box or has corners like a building pad etc. I would give it a try since I can’t see what your line work looks like. Another option would be to do depth and slope mode and create a flat pad from the pad elevation you need and then let your design line work be left on to show the pad edge. Then use the offset line option on the top of your screen to set a 5ft offset like you need and then you never run out of surface.

    Do the lines have to be elevated for this to work or can you selet a 2D line and follow the TIN Surface for elevation? Great video. Thanks.

      2D linework can be used in Horizontal selection to see how far away from a line you are or offsetting a line, but Lane Guidance is using 3D elevated lines to project off. For example a Top back of curb or an edge of pavement line can be held to project the design out, and bypass temporarily what it is using for the surface and all this has to be done with lines that have elevation to it. There is still a TIN or surface in between these so the machine always thinks it on a surface for grade. Hopefully that made sense.
