    I think the Nikon Nikkor AF-S 24-120 f4 VR lens is a great lens especially for travelling, I got one in a kit with the Nikon D750 camera and I agree the Nikon D750 and the 24-120 f4 are a great pair.

    Very nice review! I've owned this lens for over a year but never got a chance to use it much until recently. Overall it is a great lens. Decent image quality and great vibration reduction. Autofocus is quick and accurate. Compared to similar lenses I used before (Nikon 24-85mm; Canon 24-105mm), this lens offers extra reach which is great.
    In terms of image quality, it is very similar to Canon 24-105mm or Nikon 24-85mm. It is a zoom lens and does not offer the same max aperture, sharpness or micro contrast as some of the prime lenses, such as 35mm F1.8, 50mm F1.8 or 85mm.
    Set your expectations right and you won't be disappointed.

  • @davisdurand
    @davisdurand Před 8 lety +3

    I commented on this lens a number of times on other CZcams videos. A great all around lens. It's only weakness is some play in the focus ring, but I manage to live with it. Auto focuses really fast, and the vibration reduction feature is fantastic when you shoot lower than 1/125 of a second. It's a rarity that I get a blurry image when using the VR at slow shutter speeds. A great travel lens. According to DxO Mark Labs, it beats the Nikon 18-300mm lens. Their score on my Nikon d750 is 22 for the 24=120 and 17 for the 18-300. Plus, the 24=120 is lighter. No, it's not going to beat my 24-70mm/f2.8, but it's not so front end heavy, and has longer range. Also, the 24-70 is a lot more expensive, and doesn't have VR. However, the newer 24-70 has, but you are talking big bucks, and the DxO Mark score on the d750 for that lens is about the same as the old one.

    An f/4 lens on fullframe has about the same DOF as an f/2.8 lens on APS-C. So no wonder that you found the f/4 enough in terms of DOF. Also, you get a bigger equivalent range. It's like having a constant 17-70/2.8 (or actually a 16-80/2.8) on APS-C. Not bad, not bad at all!

  • @Dhammawitt
    @Dhammawitt Před 8 lety +8

    For the record,
    Really thinking about getting this lens because the
    Expense of the 24-70 doesn't give the performance
    Difference you would expect with a high price.
    Determine which is best depends on what you value the most and
    Understanding f4 is half as might light as you would get but if it
    Really doesn't matter than I'd say
    Save the money and get the 24-120
    Thanks for the review.

      @clairesdaddy3190 Před 8 lety

      Nothing out of ordinary. For an F4 lens, the chromatic aberration is very well controlled. You may correct them in post using Lightroom.
      Pretty much all zoom lenses have this problem. The Canon 50mm F1.8 STM has enormous chromatic aberration due to old optic design. My Tamron 35mm F1.8 VC also exhibits serious chromatic aberration at F1.8 under high contrast situation.
      Unless you use some really high quality primes such Rokinon 135mm F2, you will have to deal with Chromatic aberration.

    • @clairesdaddy3190
      @clairesdaddy3190 Před 8 lety +1

      No, not even close. At 85mm focal length, the depth of field at F4 will be more than twice as much (4/1.8) compared to at F1.8. For what it is worth, this 24-120mm F4, though pretty sharp for a zoom lens, is no where close to the sharpness and micro contrast of a good prime lens such as 85mm F1.8G.

    I love this lens. Use it a lot more than the 24-70mm f/2.8. Don't get me wrong, the 24-70 is a proven professional lens, but it's heavy and expensive. Nikon has really perfected the Vibration Reduction in the 24-120.. No matter how much I might be shaking, it rarely blurs an image. Can't say that for he 24-70. If your on a vacation, don't pack anything else. The Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 can't match the sharpness. Read the Belgium labs DXo Mark results if you don't believe me.

    • @Artist1974CH
      @Artist1974CH Před 4 lety

      Nope. Only for DX. However, you can put that lens on an FX camera but you have to set your FX camera to DX mode or zoom the lens in to avoid heavy vignetting. If you don't want to go through that, you may have to save your money to get a FX lens either a good used one or a new one. Just in case you didn't know, the guy in the video passed away last year. 😢

    Am curious if the image print quality of this lens is equal to the 24-70 2.8 at similar apertures/focal lengths? I own the 24-70 2.8 but am thinking about subbing that lens for this lens on my backpacking trips. I would gladly give up the stops for more focal length and less weight/size (don't need to be at 2.8 for a landscape shot and I always bring my 14-24 2.8 anyways). Just want to make sure I'm not giving up image quality!

I have been brainstorming about the combo of Nikon FX camera either D610 or D750, plus a lens since my DX lens of Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 wouldn't work on FX mode. But, after couple of months of contemplating and researching, I ran into your video. I have finally decided to get a Nikon D750 with its supposed kit lens, the one you reviewed in this video.
    Unless of cuz I go cheap the last minute. lol. But I really think I'd be much happier in the long run if I got a Nikon D750 w/Nikkor 24-120mm f/4, rather than saving a few hundred bucks by getting a Nikon D610 w/ Sigma 24-70 f/2.8.

      I don't know what's up with Nikon anymore. It seems that they've gotten to big for their britches. I never did renew the lens or the D750 because of the bad experiences I had with the D600. Instead I purchased a low usage D700 for 1/4 the cost and some older used lens. Even Ken Rockwell has been bashing them lately. Not surprised to hear based on my customer service issues. The Melville service center broke my camera during a cleaning and tried to get me to pay for the repair. I ended up with a refurbished D600 and it still has the spots issue on the sensor. Nikon won't replace it either.Everyone is saying to go Canon now. I don't know if I'm going to stick with DSLR or not. Mirror-less seems to be gaining more focus these days.

      +Mike Pukmel Umm yea sure I'll try to in the next couple of days. But like its very irregular. Some lighting conditions it's there someone's it isn't. And the worst part is I've already sent it for checking and even after that it's happening. Before the correction there was like a crazy blue vignette on the left and right top corners of the image.

      +Mike Pukmel Hi again Mike. Yes I'm sure it was a dark blue vignette on the top corners. Since I've not got a FLICKR account is there any other way I could show you the images?

      Donald Wood I got it to work excellent now. I bump up the sharpen slider in camera. Wow was I impressed with the resolution. (85mm 1.8 and 28-135 4.0)

    Given that the lens is advertised as being suitable for an APS-C sensor, I was expecting to get a review on this aspect of the lens. Your comments are quite repetitive and don't give much information at all. Thanks anyway.
