Neal Diamond wrote this song.
The ethnic make-up of the band's original line-up was diverse, with musicians of English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish and Yemeni parentage. UB40 are one of the most commercially successful reggae acts of all time in terms of record sales (over 70 million), chart positions and touring schedule. The name "UB40" was selected in reference to a form issued to people claiming unemployment benefits from the UK government's Department of Employment. The designation UB40 stood for Unemployment Benefit, Form 40.
Fun Fact: My uncle played bass in a Punk band in Birmingham they were call "XS" and true story UB40 stole their van and some equipment including the drumset and 2 amps, and then had the audacity to use that equipment at their next show... XS eventually got their equipment back but not the van...LOL
Highly recommend listening to Neil Diamond’s studio version... it truly captures the lyrics which are about drowning your sorrows. UB40 turned it into a party. Tony Tribe’s version kept the drowning sorrow feel while putting it to a Rock Steady beat.
Why torture with Neils voice????
I've been transported to a Jamaican beach while smoking a joint lol
well it good to see bob photo there, song is from Jamaica, it come from Kingston, ub4o cover it on their album labour of love, it's classic, it's roots and still it move with each generation, and matt doyle singin it now and still it cool
Tower of Power - your still a young man . 💛✌💛
To try a different direction, please do some Alice Cooper - song suggestions - Halo of Flies, Under My Wheels, Billion Dollar Babies, You Drive Me Nervous...
A few people have commented about the meaning of the bands name UB40. Their first album was titled Signing Off, which is what you did when you withdrew your claim for unemployment benefit.
UB40 have some unusual sounds in their music that I had never heard before. And I love them for it. One of my favorites is "Singing Our Own Song". This one got me hooked.
🤘🤘❤🤘🤘🤗✌🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ah this is a classic that takes me back!!!
I liked their earlier stuff that wasn't as commercial as this, tracks like King, Tyler, Earth Die Screaming, One In Ten and Food For Thought.
This was released when I was in grade 10, and it was instantly a staple of every dance I attended for the next 10 years.
One of the best covers i think. Definitively my favourite version. Neil Diamond is a genius songwriter though. 👌
One Christmas I was in a Costco and a reggae Christmas album was playing in the background, people were dancing all around the store, customers and staff. We should pipe reggae all around our country right now, maybe in the capital. People have forgotten how to have fun.
Interesting fact......the name UB40 came from the number of the unemployment office form ,which is where most of the band met up while lining up for their uneployment benefit money
Great that you picked the long, complete version to react to. *The Specials* two-tone song *This Town is Coming Like a Ghost Town,* is another great song coming out of England during this era coming out of England. I think I like them better.
Some background...England had been going through a bad recession, especially in the North where towns were de-industrializing. ( ghost towns ) Lots of multi-ethnic, genre-busting, and politicized music was coming out of this. Anyways, The Specials were part of all this ska/two-tone/punk/reggae as was UB40. Anyways...there was LOTS of different kinds of music coming out of Great Britain.
The band I grew up from my hometown 👍🏼 UB40 was the official form you fill in to register yourself at unemployed in the UK in the early 80s. Check out the songs King, or Many Rivers to Cross, also either 'One in Ten' or Present Arms if you want to hear some of their serious political stuff.
Bob Marley never recorded this song. I've never heard this version, only the original cover version of UB40. This sounds like a recent recording. Listen to the first version. UB40 had great songs. Please, react to FOOD FOR THOUGHT and ONE IN TEN.
UB40 - Rat in the Kitchen is one of their best. If you like this try the English Beat! Great ska/reggae 80's band. Ranking Full Stop is a great one by them.
And while we're on the reggae vibe, don't forget to try 10CC's great "Dreadlock Holiday". "I don't like reggae - I love it".
I was hoping you would comment on steel drums. Like you, I love songs with organs, but I love steel drums almost as much.
There's nothing like that steel drum sound.
BTW UB40 are two White Brothers from England.
Good video, reaction to UB40 - Kingston Town, is very nice.
If you want more UB40 frankly I only know of 2 others. "I can't help falling in love with you" and a duet they did with Crissy Hinde of the pretenders a cover of "I got you babe" Sonny and Cher.
This was like one of 15 other covers of Neil Diamonds song. They didnt even know it was his.
It's a totally different lane, but Three Days (studio version) by Jane's Addiction is an amazing track I think you'd really enjoy. It's so weird to me that there are so few reactions for the band. Perry Ferrell's vocals are a love it or hate it affair, but there's just so much talent in the group, and all of it's on display in this song.
The transitions are incredible. It starts quiet, then builds into this wall of sound, then it just changes into something else entirely. It's definitely a journey.
Original by Neil Diamond
You should do UB40's version of "Can't Help Falling in Love"
They were huge and their album is awesome. Love reggae. Their stuff is ALL reggae. Tyler should be next. And you kept me up late again...tsk people will talk.
Check out Kingston Town.
I love reggae. I thought UB-40 did well with this Neil Diamond song. Also enjoyed their version of Can't Help Falling In Love especially the addition of the brass. BTW, the pic of Bob Marley is interesting here. Lol
Apparently this recording is often attributed to Bob Marley on CZcams, which is a compliment of course, but wrong, and some reactors have been astounded to realise that the singer is white.
Great review! Check out their cover of I got you babe with Chrissy Hynde
You might want to watch the official video. They're white guys.
Great video! The band is not all white though
Much prefer UB40's earlier stuff. You should listen to One in Ten or Food for Tought
Chod, you should try their first 2 singles " king" and " Food For Thought" Their own songs.
If you are going to poke at reggae, 'No Woman No Cry', 'I shot the Sheriff', and 'Get Up Stand Up' by Bob Marley please!
and CONCRETE JUNGLE, probably my favourite by Bob Marley.
It would have been nice to see photo of the band rather than a rather misleading photo of Bob Marley, who never recorded it, though apparently approved of it, as did Neil Diamond.
Level42 Children say
UB40 isn't bad, but the Specials, the Clash, the Beat and Madness are all better in this ska/reggae genre IMHO. The first UB40 album is their best.
So much better than UB40, who are ok.
Awesome choice sir! Here's one you'll love, Dirty Loops - World on Fire. They're a pop-jazz fusion awesome trio! czcams.com/video/PDKecPtliGU/video.html
No bob in this song
Why is the background Bob Marley? Love him but he had nothing to do with this song
low talent cover of a great Neil Diamond song
