    Here’s something to try.
    I’ve been using the Spot AF point instead of the single AF point for birds.
    Getting a lot more in focus shots.
    Try downloading DPP4 from Canon and check in post processing where your AF point is.
    Spot AF most of the time is right on a sharp target.
    Also using One Shot with back button focus, instead of AI Servo.
    Shutter speeds of 2000-3200 with aperture f10-f11 for BIF,
    but for stationary targets getting very good results with lower shutter speeds,
    1250 or 800 at f10-f8, using Canon 100-400mm II and Canon 1.4 Extender III.
    400mm x 1.6 crop factor x 1.4 extender = 896mm.

    Hmm...your results are very different than mine...first, I find my 90D is spot on in focusing with my 100mm f/2.8L, my 400 mm f/4 DO II, and my 500 mm f/4L II. No need for any MFA. Also, I don't find any need to shoot at higher shutter speeds due to the additional MP on the 90D. I find the same for my 5DS R, too. The only thing that bothers me about 90D is that it's a 90D and not a 7DM2 or 7DM3 (or a 5D or 1D). Meaning it doesn't have the same build, control scheme, and customizable features of the xD line, and that hurts. I think you should send your 90D back and get another one. All of my Canon bodies AF fine on those lenses I mentioned, so those lenses are fine. If I bring a new camera in and it doesn't, and ends up needing MFA, then that camera is suspect, and should go back. Doing MFA is just you hiding the problems Canon has on QA. Don't do that. The only time you should need MFA is when your lens get old and have been banged around and they are out of adjustment. Then MFA can help, but they still should go back to Canon for proper adjustment so that you don't need MFA. Enjoy your videos, by the way.

    I'm so glad that I'm not the only one! I bought the 90D as an upgrade from a 700D. I also have a 6D mark1 so I am used to a certain level of detail even pixel peeping in lightroom. I mostly bought the 90D for the filming options, but I thought it was also aimed at the action photography side so it's annoying because I've never bought anything new especially something at that price. Thank you for explaining the high Megapixel issue with lower shutterspeed. I went to photograph the Seals in Norfolk UK and found that I loved the live view and was getting much better results and since they are very sleepy slow moving subjects it was perfect to really test it out, but I did struggle to do micro adjustments that were truly tack sharp when using normal view finder. I will try use higher shutterspeeds, but maybe not on rainy, cloudy days as my ISO goes through the roof.

      @@CJamesPhoto I think considering its very early days and since I have a lot of good photos from my trip especially my first sighting of a brown hare which was shot at 1/250th it was a nice pan shot which I've never been great at but i was very happy with the sharpness of the eye. So I will try be patient with it as I know it's just got to take a bit of practise and tweaking. It's like all new cameras, the moment something it's as expected we can be quick to judge. And to be honest when I saw my focus points display on my photo preview some were not even on the subject or on say the eye. I just wish the weather would clear up in the UK so I can get out with it more!
      Also to add, I loved the video specs! If anything it will be a great video camera, especially with 120fps and focus peaking!

      Hello there, are you still happy with the 90d? I want to upgrade from my 700d
      I do about 80%photos and 20%film (but mostly because 700d isn't best for filming in my opinion). Mostly wildlife (foxes, deer and wild boars) and therefore in the evening (bad light), would you recommend it to me ? :)

    • @samh1432
      @samh1432 Před 4 lety

      @@SuperBlaustern I love it, not to say it has its faults with AF accuracy, but it's served me very well and in the right condition and using it right it's done great job both photos and filming! I mostly shoot video on a video tripod so it's quite easy to switch over to photos on the tripod when I've set it all up and use live view instead so I can just tap the subject on the screen and it will track it that way.
      I am getting an R6 soon which will probably be my main photo camera as that's got way better af accuracy.
      Best of luck with your decision. If video specs arent a big necessity, maybe look at the 5dmk3?

    Focusing is the #1 reason I’m looking to upgrade my 77d - for similar issues to what you are describing. I photograph wildlife and birds too. Honestly in this case I think the 90d will do a better job, it’s updated tech with better features, it can be updated with newer firmware too. All the cameras are similar to each other but the 90d has a step up. The only real benefit I see with the m6 is there is more focus points.

    My experience with the 90D is similar. I bought it hoping I might get a boost in image resolution for my bird photography, over my 7D MkII, courtesy of the increased pixel count. I don’t know if I was unlucky or if the camera has inherent quality flaws. Mine short-focussed so badly that the full 20 points of available micro focus adjustment was insufficient to allow rectification. All attempts to configure the AE lock button, to toggle between single shot and servo, failed. Particularly disappointing given the inability to assign two AF back buttons. Shooting in servo delivered fluctuating focus results, even with a stationary subject - as though the lens was continuously mini-hunting. I wonder if it may have been caused by some mis-interaction with the image stabilisation system? I’m a rusted on Canon user and have never had any problems with the numerous cameras I’ve had over the years. I hope this experience will be an isolated aberration. I returned my new camera today. Bring on a mirrorless 7D MkIII!

  • @stevepseudonym445
    @stevepseudonym445 Před 4 lety +7

    Just to be clear for anyone who might be confused, a higher MP count won't have any negative effect on the image you capture. Upgrading from a 7D2 to a 90D gives you 1.6 times as many pixels, which is comparable to swapping a lens from FF to a (Canon) crop body or switching from a 300mm lens to 500mm. All of them effectively get you closer to your subject. That means that all of them put more pixels on your subject, and the higher resolution obviously shows more detail. That finer detail might mean tack sharp bird feathers or it might mean slightly soft feathers due to focus that's a bit off or a bit of camera shake. A camera with high resolution is capable of capturing a lot of detail, but it requires our technique to be very good. And if the image isn't as sharp as you'd like you can still resize to something smaller.

    Currently I’m using my Eos 50D(!) for all sorts of everything but a lot of the time for sports (Triathlon) and wildlife (birds). I use a 70-200 f4 L (with Canon 1.4 extender) and 17-40 f4L. Reading all the comments on the AF-system (after watching your very informative video), I’m wondering an upgrade to the 90D is the right thing to do. Can you please give your opinion on this?

    Hi. Just a thought. I saw your last video where you said you had to micro adjust the AF minus 14! Is your 500mm a version 1 or 2? I only ask because I recently purchased a version 1 which was sold as mint and there was not a mark on it. The first time I used it the focus was hunting backward and forwards constantly. Had to have a refund. Apparently this is a known fault that develops over time with the AF on the version 1 and they can no longer be repaired due to parts availability so I bit the bullet and splashed out twice as much on a 3 year old version 2 which is currently supported by Canon. Minus 14 is a big adjustment and I haven't had to adjust my 5d4 or 80d at all with this 500mm. Something to think about.......

      Hey thanks for the info, but yeah mine is the version 1, so I guess that might make some sense.. although mine is pretty good when it comes to af, it’s only the 90d I have had the problem with.

  • @markarmstrong3962
    @markarmstrong3962 Před 4 lety +2

    Fully agree with your findings. I have taken a couple week long trips with the 90D. While I do get some great shots it takes a lot of them. Equally disappointing is that the colors seem to be a bit washed out? As you mentioned a higher than expected shutter speed is required which ups the noise. My biggest disappointment is that the dynamic range is poor... I very much wish it could handle low light better. What I have not done is to do some perfectly still bird shots from a hide which I will do hopefully soon. Then I can compare to the results I get with my 5DMk4 in the same location.
    I use my 400mm DO IS ii as my primary wildlife lens and I have noticed the 90D fits that lens mount tighter than my 5D. Probably just the difference in Canon manufacturing. I do like the ergonomics of the 90D over any other Canon so far. Hopefully Canon will come out with a firmware upgrade soon to handle these issues. Will keep it and test a little longer but if it remains more of a struggle I will send it back.

    • @CJamesPhoto
      @CJamesPhoto  Před 4 lety

      Thanks, yeah it’s definitely more work then it should be. Hmm you definitely have a point there about color, it doesn’t have the same pop canon normally has in their cameras. I think the 5d is way better, but I guess the 90d has that little extra reach some might look for. Hope you manage to get something good from the hide and it would be good if they can update for sure :)

    • @markrigg6623
      @markrigg6623 Před 4 lety +1

      Dynamic range is much improved over previous canon apsc sensors and the noise is on par with the old 80D at which considering the pixel increase is fairly impressive. Maybe you're expecting a bit much but you could also be underexposing maybe which is forcing the noise levels up? Just a thought.

I know the 90D is a good camera and will get the job done most of the time.. and yes there is the benefit of it being closer with a crop sensor. But with the 7D ii you will get a better response when it comes to tracking, especially birds in flight with much higher keeper shots. The 90D sucks with that.
      If you would go full frame, why not get the canon r6?

    My 90D will arrive tomorrow. I am trying to get more rich from the cropped high megapixel sensor for wildlife photos. Currently I am shooting with 5DS. Also the 4k video with the crop mode on 90D will give me even more rich for video projects. I will use this camera with my 400mm F4 DO II lens mostly times attached with 1.4 extender and sometimes with 2x when I shoot video in a long distance. Shooting from a tripod in low shutter speed with IS ON sometimes confuse the lens and give me not good results. I got good results shooting handheld with IS ON even on 1/40 sec with my 50MP camera. For fast moving objects on my 5DS camera 1/2500 sec. works very good for me with Expand AF area or using the all AF points if there is no something to abstract behind the flying object. And yes the micro adjustment for not mirorless cameras is a must when looking for the perfect focus. For small birds single central point is need it with proper micro adjustment for good results. That's the most accurate double cross point working even on F8. Yes the cameras are not perfect but with the 10fps shutter speed on 90D big chance more photos will be on focus. The tracking sensitivity should be on (0) or (-1) on the Canon cameras for better tracking fast moving objects. 90% on my photos with this settings are in focus even with the currant high megapixel 5DS camera. I was shooting in a lake here in Missouri flying ducks together with another photographer. His camera was Sony A1- $6000 camera and 200-600mm Sony lens. He was shocked at how many of my photos were in perfect focus compared to his photos. There is no perfect camera, but I can only say that years ago I was in the world of mirrorless cameras and there were many things that I did not like there. So I went back to DSLR's and I am more than happy I did it. Good Luck!

      I can tell you that the lenses will make a big difference, the better the glass the better the results. But I understand money is a big issue. Look out for some used lenses that are good quality, you don’t need the newest version, older lenses are still awesome.
      The electronic shutter will be more problematic with some lighting but give it a go. Otherwise using the live view and the screen to take photos work’s easy really well and also less chance of you making more noise then needed.
      Although I didn’t have much problem with the shutter noise and animals before. You just have to take a shot and wait before the next, animals will get used to hearing that around them and stay. As long as you are in a still position yourself and not Making yourself too noticeable.

      Assuming your social events mean you'll be using relatively short focal lengths you should have fewer issues with sharpness, all else being equal. Unless you're shooting from very close and at large apertures the greater depth of field will give you more leeway for slightly inaccurate focus. The much wider field of view with a shorter focal length will make a given amount of camera shake far less important. It takes excellent technique to get sharp shots with along telephoto lens, but it should be very easy to get sharp images if you're shooting with the 24 to 70 (equivalent to 38- 112 on the 90D)

  • @Rascallucci
    @Rascallucci Před 4 lety +1

    OK, so I've had the 90D for a good few months now. In terms of AF, it is 50/50, by that I mean if you use Spot or 1-Point, it is pretty OK. However, if you are a birder and you want to do BIF, let's pick something relatively easy, an eagle gliding by. Initially, I thought I would use Large Zone to give good focusing coverage of the bird, boy was I wrong or was I wrong!! Those focusing squares in Optical Viewfinder mode are lazy and don't want to move. Even when they do move, they hardly land on the intended subject. I have seen absolutely terrible results in post when checking on the focusing points, it is hopeless, the hit rate is close to zero.
    If you must shoot in Optical Viewfinder mode, then like I mentioned before you must use either Spot or 1-Point. What I do is acquire the target out wide, zoom in, focus and fire away continuously using Al Servo. That way you will be getting much better results. Or alternatively, simply shoot in Live View mode. The same focusing squares in Live View mode are totally different, they are like if they were on steroids, they move much faster, land on the subject, lock on focus and let you know by changing colour. However, from an operational standpoint, it is impossible to shoot in Live View mode unless you have one of those LCD Viewfinder contraptions that you attach to the LCD at the back of the camera. That way you would be able to shoot hand-held pressing the eye piece of the LCD viewfinder against your eye which helps a ton for aiming.
    So, what does that tell us? The 90D basically is already telling you to shoot mirrorless aka Live View mode. If you are upgrading from a much older model like myself from the 400D, then sure by all means. But, say if you are already using a 70D or 80D or even a 7D II? My suggestion would be to go mirrorless, pending on what the new R5 will be like or migrate to Sony. If you must stay with DSLR, you might want to look the the Nikon D850 or D500.

      I also use back button on my 7d2, with my 500f4 never had a problem with my 300mm f2.8 same problem as you had occasionally a burst can typically be in sharp focus then the middle shots of burst can be oof! Strange one!
