    Please use headphones or good speakers for this. It won't "work" if you're listening on your phone (you need bass!)
    This video demonstrates all 7 relative modes of the major scale, and how simply changing the tonal center can create modal harmony. Combine this perspective with this video • Demonstrating All 7 Mo... and you'll have two different but effective ways to think about modes.

      Great video and concept, but your Bass and Chords are a little too loud and tend to drown out the 'melody' line rather than underpin it, which is a pity.

    I've been a self taught musician for 20 years. I knew how to write and play music, but after recently finding your channel, I am now beginning to UNDERSTAND music. I've never understood many concepts until I've heard you explain them. I've always written in scales, but never really knew or cared which one. I didn't think this stuff was important for what I was doing. Now I realize how much better it will make me and how much easier it will be to write and learn music. You've opened up a whole new world to me in just the couple weeks I've been watching your videos. This is perfect because I've been fascinated with Cmajor and Aminor and their relativity and have been playing around with it on the piano a lot (white keys haha). So this video reinforces what I've recently discovered. You've earned my money. I'm heading to Patreon right now. And everyone else who eats these videos up should as well!

      Exact same feeling here. I've gone went through lots of advanced theory for years, but only now do I start to have an intuitive grasp on harmony. Your approach really brings a new perspective. And now I realize how classical/jazz training totally fails at making these things accessible - we are taught from the beginning to reason within a major/minor/mode paradigm, when this is all just subjective. On many songs you would have trouble finding a unique tonal center. There would be more relevant things to teach, and I love your videos for that. I hope that we will come up with a more practical model in the future. Many thanks !

    • @telequacker-9529
      @telequacker-9529 Před 3 lety +3

      It's hard for me to hear it as well. My headphones don't have the strongest bass but they're definitely not phone speakers... probably should have mixed the bass overly loud, cut the drums down a bit, used a less "busy" sound in the note sequencing and orchestral parts. I don't have any issues hearing it when I sit down with my guitar and a looper pedal and play the scales over super plain, unadorned chords. Less "Squaresoft battle music", more "Elementary school teacher demonstrating Row Row Row Your Boat" sorta vibe.

    This is perhaps the best explanation of tonics and modes I’ve yet found. I’ve been absorbing as much music theory as I can for the last year or so, but now I finally understand why the tonic matters, and how to use modes to affect the ‘feel’ of the music.

    @Signals Music Studio
    I’ve commented on a couple of your videos lately but I really hope you see this one. I just want to say thank you. I have been playing guitar for well over 20 years but have never taken it seriously, just dabbling with the odd tune. I have always wanted to learn music theory after reading some guitar mags and being left to feel like a confused idiot because I just could not understand what they were talking about. At the beginning of this year, I had a massive mental breakdown as a result of the anxiety and mental health issues I suffer from. I locked myself away in my room for days and in that time, music was my go to for remaining stable and keeping calm. I started to use CZcams to ‘study’ music theory and found I started to take it in reasonably easy. I’ve watched hundreds of videos explaining modes; minor thirds; Diminished chords; dominants etc etc and for the most part, I kinda understand at least half of the videos. But there had always been a ‘but what about...?’ A nagging thought in my head (one of my traits unfortunately) that there is something I’m missing, something stopping me from truly understanding this.
    As much as I enjoy and mostly understand the other videos, I have to say that honestly, you put all this complicated stuff into such a simple and effective, straight forward way. I don’t know how you do it but thank you. All the questions I have floating around my head, you seem to be answering.

    This opened somekind of block / black spot about my understanding of theory.
    Really enlightening examples in this one. Highly recommended!
    Lately I have had a habit to create melody at first, right after choosing the scale.. and I have normally picked the scale based to what I have practiced most at that time.
    It causes a lot of the songs being in the same key, because then I just finish the track by those same settings, one scale and one mode.
    After watching theory videos about modes for a while and especially after this lecture, it all started to get so clear.
    Got some ideas - production wise - how to compose in DAW. If I make simple beat and melody at first, I still don't have to choose mode yet.
    For now on, at this phase I'm just gonna test all the modes first, by adding those long bass notes and some chords, to lock tonal centre to some angle, then trying another.. and finally choosing the one which inspires most and emphasizes that melody.
    After choosing the mode (phrygian is my new fav.) I guess I'll just add more notes to the basslines, chords where they fit well and so on.
    Melody propably can and will be altered afterwards too, but this might be a good way to get things going faster than before.
    I can't wait until I have learned basic skills to high enough level so that I can start doing more advanced stuff with perhaps multiple scales and modes in the same song. ATM it would still be just a big mess. :D
    Thank you for extra motivation and inspiration, I'm starting to believe that I really am going to be real musician in this life time here on planet earth!

    True. A particular score could certainly be 'written' (encoded) in ANY 'key'. For the key of C major and the key of A minor, there are no differences between those particular 'keys'. The feel and mood aspect comes from the 'substance' that we add - the structuring - the platform from which we build or develop a piece of music - which includes those concepts such as starting chord and ending chord, and what chord patterns are used. That's where the nice music theory that has been developed over the centuries comes in handy. Nice video! The x-men, superman, battle march type moods are energising.

    Jake. I don't understand the "us" in signal music studios. But I must comment. I have for years and years studied music on my own. Read books watched videos and sat under teachers at conservatories. But the lessons here have the perfect amount of time and just the right information to unlock and understanding of the principals each video presents. Well done. Well done!

    This is a fantastic explanation of tonal centres and modes. Not sure about the others comments but I think you get the complete feel with all of the examples. Fantastic explanation on something that drives guitar (or music) newbies nuts looking for a good explanation.

    I first listened to this a couple years ago and found it amazing and enlightening. Since then, whenever someone asks me "What are modes and why should I care?" this is my first response.
    I follow this up with your "Riffing with Modes" videos.

    I'm 2 minutes into this video and already have a more practical / intuitive understanding of "why and how modes". You sir, are amazing.
