A lot of people are suggesting the song is from the perspective of the Archangels, which is a good interpretation that I agree with, but I'd like to suggest another: by the end of the game most players will have tangled with a lot of archangels and come out on top. That doesn't stop each new Archangel from trying to spook you with some silly shenanigans and a big speech about how they're too powerful for you, but after a while you've heard it all before. Sooner or later, this stops being their theme and becomes yours - for all their pomp and bluster, in the end it's the same old story for you.
I always assumed the song was for the player until people suggested the archangel theory.
I think the reason it's assumed it's the archangel is because the song is called "same old story", and since the song is played since the very first encounter, kinda make sense it could be th e archangel, since encounters with them never ended well for the humans prior.
But yeah, your theory makes sense too.
I agree with that theory it is pretty solid as each archangel is just negative towards humans but by the end we are just like ya ya tell it to some one who cares
Having played more of the game since then, I also think my interpretation plays very nicely with the concept that the player and their friends are at risk of reproducing Aleph's urge to conquer.

I love it when a game has an evolving soundtrack and it adds lyrics at crucial moments. First time I fused and the vocals of this started, I got chills. I still do, every time.

Yea that's when I went from liking the game to loving it. I was like "ok this game is really cool and unique. Is good" to "this is the best game ever"
Games usually don’t have lyrics in their soundtracks, only games I currently know are cassette beasts, Before your eyes, and I think there’s another one but I don’t remember the name.

I love how this song seems to be sung from the perspective of the Archangel, but because the lyrics only kick in when you fuse, it makes it seem like the Archangel is *panicking* at the very real possibility it'll finally meet its match here, and is desperately trying to crush your morale before you crush *it.*
Still very early into the game but man, this game rules so far.
This reminds me of the time I completely bodied Lamento Mori despite being about the same level.

There's a couple that've gone "lol, lmao even" and one-shot ME (not my beast, ME. and mirideth) when I was close to full health because whoops, should've known what their super was before the first time they popped it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i love how different parts of this song's lyrics feel totally different in the context of different Archangel fights
I like the theory that the first part is from the Archangel, the second from you/your partner, and the final chorus is both you and the Archangel together singing the same threats at each other.
I love nowhere monarch’s design it looks like something from that beetles and the yellow submarine music video and how it also looks extremely bouncy in its idle

That's exactly what I was thinking. It really does have that feeling of the anime protagonist going all out and their theme music starts playing. Except this time, YOU'RE the anime protagonist.
I remember there's one scene where Eugene is describing what it feels like to fuse, and one of the options you can pick to respond is that he sounds just like an anime character, and that's exactly what I was thinking, and I had been thinking of it the exact same way

I keep forgetting how niche this game actually is. It's just so good! The ost slaps, the gameplay is interesting, characters are incredibly charming. Just a perfect game all around.

Full game was amazing. The soundtracks were lit. Enjoyed every song throughout the game. The story, gameplay, and music were all top notch!

i mean the monster catching and battling is not new at all but there implementation of it drives a new strategy level plus all that hip 80’s and 90’s music ^^ and I can absolutely agree with the dds buddy
A better pokemon that is going persona with it's plot and has the exploration of a zelda game. Perfection.

The reason the archangel fights are so touching (along with this absolute masterpiece of a song ofc) is that they’re the culmination of the game’s themes of sticking to eachother in the face of our incomprehensible reality

I picked up the game yesterday, I had no idea what it was about besides the description. I picked the spooky sheep and later when given the choice on evolution I accidentally chose the astral variant, I played on deck and I got so enamored by the gameplay that I barley listened to the dialogue. I think I choose correctly though.
It's an actual tragedy that this only has 27k views.

it is a song that plays when you fight the most dangerous extra-dimensional beings in the games world (the lyrics kick in when you fuse with your partner)

Recently picked up cassette beasts again after like, almost an entire year of not playing it. And when the lyrics for this song came up I instantly got thrown back like I never left the game. Awesome song, awesome soundtrack.
this song is a legit banger
Everyone's been saying this song is written from the perspective of the Archangels, or from the players; I think it's both at once.
The first verse feels like the experience of meeting an Archangel. You stop and stare at the latest nightmarish creature, instinctive fear setting in and paralyzing you until it inevitably attacks you, all the while telling you how it plans to end you.
The chorus feels like the player arguing back. You're defying the fear, fighting alongside your partner, fused into one being with the strength of two. Even the latter half is a threat to the Archangel; if they keep this up, you'll take them down, just like the last one.
The second verse feels like you've landed a few solid hits on the Archangel. It's not used to people fighting back, it's hurt, and trying even harder than ever to demoralize you; saying your arguments are pointless, that you won't make it out of this unscathed, and that you'll drown in the depths of despair like everyone else.
The chorus comes back, and you yet again refute them. You've fought other Archangels before and triumphed, and you intend to do it again.
Finally, the end of the song feels like the climax of the fight, sung from both sides' perspectives. The Archangel tries yet again to get in your head, telling you that their victory is inevitable. You respond in kind. Both sides pull out all the stops for one final clash: you and your partner using your fusion power, vs. the Archangel using their angelic attack...
And in the end, it's the same old story.
I discovered this game through a very good love-letter kinda video. As a guy who loves mechanics and discovering synergies, this video resonated with me a LOT. But not enough to imediately sell me the game... Until he mentioned the games music was THE SHIT... yeah, don't regret that purchase, that's for sure.

Just the the game the other day and really enjoyed the music but there was something incredibly special when the music I was already really digging dropped vocals into a pivotal moment like fusing your characters hearts into one.
It's just a nice little touch I still haven't gotten tired of.

Man, one of my favorite tracks in the game (though it was eventually beaten out by Shot in the Dark and the final boss theme). So glad I got the deluxe version to get the soundtrack, amazing stuff man!
