The purpose of FSE 101 is to set the stage for the safety lifecycle as a sound, logical and complete way to use safety instrumented systems to manage process plant risk. It goes on to present the basic techniques for analyzing risk and developing the requirements for any safety instrumented functions needed to reduce the risk to a tolerable level. The first five sections of FSE 101 cover the background and related context for the safety lifecycle. The last four sections of FSE 101 cover the main hazard identification, SIF definition and risk analysis sections of the safety lifecycle finishing with the documentation of these results in the safety requirements specification.
