- In this episode, Joe Moore travels to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for a rare in-person interview with chemist, filmmaker, science journalist, and go-to media consultant, Hamilton Morris.
They cover a lot: Hamilton's early realizations of how ill-informed the media was about psychedelics; his time at Vice and how being a journalist gave him a license for curiosity; why he was most interested in covering the substances people were comfortable hating; respectability politics and how only showing what helps the movement is propaganda; Ken Nelson; how we can learn from watching people do salvia on CZcams; PCP advocate and Process Church alum, Timothy Wyllie; how people attribute more to chemical makeup than their own psychology; and why it's unnecessary (and potentially dangerous) to embrace the narrative that you need to suffer (and do so with a shaman) to truly heal. Did you see his podcast with Dennis McKenna? He basically told Hamilton as much lol. He said “get to work Hamilton, this is your job now, the torch has been passed to you”
I wonder how surreal that moment must have been for him, having Terrance’s brother tell him that is now his job to take on the work & legacy of legends like Mckenna and Shulgin

5-meo-DMT is the Cadillac of the Triptymine. Its little cousin N,N Dimethyltryptamine is the Porche model. Both extremely classy, and a step above your average LSD, unless you are ingesting Sandoz, Owsley, or Nicki Sands finished product. Everything else is mid-tier, although i have never had anything by pickard, shulgin, or one or two others in that circle. We have been blessed to have been able to test and take the sacrament ourselves and with people we care sbout to traverse the unknown.
The idea that the pressure and strength to prohibit and criminalize drugs out weighs just either not doing that or helping the addicted and poor amazes me
I remember swimming on PCP with friends, many noted that we felt dry while in the water ..it was the thing we did most often on PCP.

... Here is something important people should know... the plain of jars in the Golden Triangle is most likely an ancient work of art honoring the Opium poppy. The jars are shaped like poppy pods, and are scattered randomly, like poppies in a field. Evidence for burials is scant.... look up pictures of the plain of jars, and of hill-tribe opium Harvest, and of Hill tribe culture. Hill tribe women have beautiful headdresses featuring imitation poppy pods framing their faces.... thankfully, the plain of jars is now a world heritage site.

anecdotally, in regards to the ant -inflammatory effects i find 2cb to be very effective for muscle pain as well as making stretching and exercise more effective.
I could say the same thing in regards to Dxm; any correlation?
@@marcusfoust5050 They use ketamine for pain so it's the same as that. But it's not actually making your muscles more flexible, it's just making you not able to feel pain. So you could be injuring yourself and not notice until after.
I've never tried 2cb but I've tried most of the others and shrooms specifically actually give me pain, probably because of the vasoconstriction, but I don't get that from LSD or other psychedelics. I just assumed 2cb would cause vasoconstriction as well, which should have the opposite effect of what you're saying, but I guess not.
I have pain already, but whenever I take mushrooms now, it always makes my pain way worse. For multiple days. I can't use it anymore for that reason, though it didn't used to do that even though I've always had pain. Never heard of anyone else having it, probably because people are too afraid to admit shrooms could have a negative effect in any way.

Yes it is.
It's amazing to me that 5-MeODMT went under the radar for so long - a friend picked up a gram in '78 and we smoked a little...it was quite impressive, but for some reason it never really caught on, but lt continued to be available for more than 20 years. It might have continued to be available a little longer, but it's appearance online
along with some other little known compounds like 2-CT-7 spelled it's doom.

Probably because its alot more dangerous than N'N DMT in terms of dosage and a bit more intense than it. Regular DMT is alot more forgiving and readily available.
A shame about 2-CT-7, the 2C-X series is just awesome and the more obscure ones are much more difficult to find even on the DNMs.

My brother in lore Dr Ivan Casselman did his doctorate here in Lismore at Southern Cross Uni on Salvia. He loved the CZcams clips because he could study it without influencing the experiment. He said only 15% of the Salvia CZcams experiences were considered negative by the users. The media just focused on the negative ones ☮️

@@brianallen8588 it’s like being trapped underneath the carpet like the carpet rolled up and rolled over me and trapped me underneath the carpet and it kept rolling like a wave over me and I was just tumbling tumbling tumbling tumbling it’s like I was suffocating and I couldn’t get out of it was like a loop. A thought loop. Now this didn’t happen once it happened like four times I was dumb enough to do it four times. Yes after that I wrote it completely off.
The same with the methylated tryptamine after about 75 or 80 experiences and no machine elves all I’m getting here is Hindu-based situations. I don’t subscribe to that so sayonara on that too. I mean it wasn’t bad experience but it was like is this is it? This is what McKenna and them we’re raving about for so many years this is what Rogan raved about? Yeah no sorry. I mean not painful but rather freaking intense you know. When you blow that last breath out it’s like you keep breathing out but you’re really not and it’s like you’re stuck in a food dehydrator and you’re being sucked dry until it’s almost painful and every thought is racing through your head and then you kind of like implode into something. A membrane maybe, then there they are waiting for me the Hindu deities. Oh no no no. Why would a Southern Baptist be seeing that? Yes they say you hallucinate what your experiences have been in life. I never seen any of that I had to look it up then I spotted it in a book OK that’s what I’m seeing, what is this you know?
Did I see it in the movie and forget I don’t know I’m old. There was always like a female presence I can’t lie about that it was a female or motherly situation. It always seemed like it was not happy with me. Not really mad but you can feel like, when you’re a kid you do something wrong in front of your mother and you know you done wrong that’s the feeling I had every time.
Now you wanna try something that is better than all of this more therapeutic and you can remember it? Yeah absolutely most rewarding substance I’ve ever encountered in my life and this is coming from a diehard stimulate head who loves exotic stimulants immensely. it’s called methoxetamine. It is pure magic it is bliss it is the holy grail of all substances illicit or otherwise.

@@waltersobchak7275 interesting experience you’ve had there. Never done salvia myself or much else to speak from experience. I’ve heard that smoking salvia is the worst way to take it. It’s spirit doesn’t like fire. The traditional way is to eat the leaves and it seems much less intense that way. Could be dosage and administration related. But don’t do it if you don’t want to.
Personally I like Mr. Wiley and his thoughts and viewpoints on dolphins kind he expressed how he thinks while he’s on the substance and it was very different from 5he people eating reports

It was available in Louisville until the mid 1990s..a chemical supply company had it in stock ..no Id required..
There's still hundreds of psychedelics you can get online. Also in Canada you can even order illegal drugs on the clearnet as well, not just legal ones. I can just order some MDMA right now if I wanted to and have it in my mail box in 4 days. It's pretty crazy.

I'm confused. No one is saying the critiques of Compass have anything to do with not wanting Hamilton or Jason to have the ability to do this work. The real question is why is Compass funding it? As a for-profit company that has patented a psilocybin manufacturing process (and, to be clear, as part of allowing "their" compound to be used in research apparently gets the right to refuse the publication of data-meaning data that might possibly put their "investment" in a negative light-) what's in it for Compass to fund Hamilton's research? Why is Hamilton not addressing this important question openly and articulately?
As a participant in a MAPS-funded clinical trial, I'm *especially* sensitive to the ethical responsibility researchers have to their participants (MAPS does it right, BTW). Compass seems absolutely opaque and untrustworthy in this respect, and I have genuine concern for the well-being of the participants in Compass trials. Hamilton's science- and data-driven perspective on drugs is vital to our society-why would he not see Compass' ability to possibly *manipulate* data for its own ends as a serious red flag?
And for the record, I don't believe people championing the ethical responsibility of a profit-driven corporation to produce good data-especially when they are using the fragile mental health outcomes of human beings as that data-as being "fringe moralists". While research and chemistry are clearly fundamental, the history of questionable-and even destructive ethics within those industries must be acknowledged and safeguarded against. Ultimately it is the human beings at the other end of the equation that often get the rawest deals. Hamilton, I know you can do better...

“Identifying natural products based exclusively on mass spec or GCMS is not ideal, you have to do a lot of work to definitively characterize the structures” (29:39) Does anybody know what would be ideal? HPLC?
You need a combination of techniques... after the acid-base extraction and recrystalization, do a melting point. If it's sharp and matches the literature, clean it up with chromatography. Verify w/ GCMS (there are libraries for the spectra of nearly everything). A polarimeter will tell you if it's -R, -S, or racemic... there are ways to isolate enantiomers. After that, MRI and X-ray crystallography, both of which are expensive, time-consuming, and require great skill. Just my guess.

Hamilton should start an online psychedelic chemistry class. If he charged $300/student, I am sure he could make millions. Not everyone lives near a university, but many have basic foundations in chemistry, they just lack practice in the various trchniques. The final exam has to include the ability to make whatever you like.

Cool idea, but it takes many years of full time work to get to the point where you can just make any chemical you feel like.

1. Here is what we make today ... Various precursors ... Here is the chemical reaction that takes place ... 1M of this, 2.5 moles of that, ...
2. You will need these chemicals which can be purchased here ... At a good price ... Maybe this could be used to ensure the enrollment fee; ie, making the chems easily available at a central location.
3. Perform the reaction with notes on things to be careful of, demonstrating the yield.
Try to avoid amalgam reductions. I hate seeing them promulgated since Mercury is so toxic. Try to use electrochemical reductions and methods that do not create toxic waste.

I find mushrooms to be more than adequate for mental exploration, and therapeutic use. Depending on dose, you can have a mild, or mind shattering experience. People who have LIMITED EXPERIENCE talk about shrooms as being inferior to DMT....lol... they are just wrong!

They're all the basically the same, it's about the dose. I prefer LSD because it lasts long enough to actually have time to integrate something into real life. With DMT or shrooms, I have a lot of profound insights while I'm on the drug, but it's over as fast as it begins. Shrooms are way more confusing than most other psychedelics I've tried. Plus the stimulation of LSD helps to promote actually doing something and not just laying there melting into your bed.
Also shrooms make my back pain worse now for some reason, so I basically cannot use them. Like literally every time I take shrooms now I get horrible back pain. But I don't get that from any other psychedelic, so I have a feeling it's something to do with the actual mushroom material and not just the vasoconstriction or whatever, since LSD also causes vasoconstriction but does not give me back pain.
