Why China Has Cancelled “Sissy Men"

  • In 2021, China's broadcasting regulator issued a ban on 'niang pao' or 'sissy men' from appearing on TV and video streaming sites. The derogatory term is used to describe men with effeminate looks. Do these rules signal a return to more traditional notions of patriarchy, masculinity and even nationalism?Click here to SUBSCRIBE to VICE Asia: bit.ly/2LhqAR9

    In high school I talked with a Chinese boy from ESL class, he said doing housework will hurt a man’s masculinity, therefore he never helped around the house. So I asked what he’s gonna do in college. He said he’ll live with mom and let her do everything. Recently one of my Chinese classmates from college had a baby boy. He posted a picture of his baby picking toenails with a caption says “so proud of my masculine son because real man picks toenails with hands.” Most of us aren’t like that, but few of them do weird mental gymnastics to protect masculinity.

      I'm a Chinese myself living in China and I do think I have more Chinese male friends than you are, but I don't think any of my friends have the idea of living with their mothers and letting them do everything, I think your example is just very exaggerated.
      In fact, Chinese men are more willing to take care of household chores in East Asian countries comparing with Japan and Korea.
      Also a very important reason why the Chinese government banned “Sissy Men” is what this video doesn't mention: Japanese and Korean culture was actually influenced by the US, especially Japan,U.S. basically redesigned the Japanese education system after the WW2, and the de-masculinization of East Asia, which was also part of the Anglo-Saxon strategy.Most importantly, our per capita gdp is only in the middle of the world, while our country is at risk of war. Americans can do whatever they want,they can have lgbtq+10000000,but we have a lot of things to do to revive our country,we are just too bussy to care
      China does limit this culture, but better safe than sorry.
      China is not Japan and Korea, it is politically and culturally independent, the Chinese government have right of not acceptting this culture,right?we can develop our own culture, for example, men dressed as women which is often seen in Peking Opera.
      In Chinese culture, men are required to study literature(文) and martial arts(武), we have our own traditional cultural pursuits, why must men become 'Sissy'?

    Western societies want to be open societies, they allow this lifestyle to be promoted in culture, media, and entertainment. Good on them, let's see how their civilization turns out in the long run. Chinese society allows for these lifestyles to exist as individuals choices, but they see great danger in allowing such people to have influence in media, culture, and entertainment. The Chinese don't want their impressionable youths to be influenced by such people. Chinese people always have a big picture/long term view of their civilization.
    There is an old saying that goes "If you tolerate everything, you stand for nothing". Westerners abandoned Christianity and spirituality and started adopting liberalism and debauchery. The West now lacks morality, decency, accountability, and competence. It is now being reflected in their politics, institutions, and government. Westerners have become extremely petty, fighting over gender issues and LGBT rights, instead of focusing on making their nations stronger. Chinese people are not blind, many of their elites got educated in the West and see what's happening in the West. They are not impressed by the West, most are appalled by the current state of the West and reject all these stupid ideas from the West. This is the primary reason why for the last 40 years, the West has been stagnant and China has been rising.

When the Roman Empire collapsed, the West went through a thousand years of darkness call the Dark Ages. The Roman language (Latin) was no longer spoken by the people, Greco-Roman history and philosophy was lost for entire generations. If not for the Arabs and Muslims keeping a record of Greco-Roman history and literature nobody would know who Socrates was or who Plato was.

      When I have the nerve to “maliciously” ask for my pay, the cops drag my hungry ass away
      How is there no labor law in this evil society?
      Why’s it so easy for the elites to trample on our dignity?
      The tales no one dares to tell are beyond belief

      Sunny and Cheerful Kong Yiji, Sunny and Cheerful Kong Yiji

    I think featuring a trans woman here unnecessarily diverts this documentary from the topic of discussion. Like in J-POP and K-pop, the so-called "sissified" men are essentially straight men that women swoon over. The issue of anti-trans or anti-LGBT is a totally separate topic that belongs in another video. Japan and Korea are still very much homophobic even with the "sissified" men being praised and widely accepted.
    I support LGBT, but I'm also against the recent rise of popularity of eliminated men. I don't expect trans to be masculine, but I expect men to be.

    • @jeetdhindsa
      @jeetdhindsa Před rokem +7

      Yes totally agree, this piece is detracting from this social phenomenon and trying to make this about identity and gender politics. I think it's more complex then that, and that this cancellation is more about geopolitics than gender politics or China trying to prevent unchecked soft power (sissified male celebrities and influencers) from detracting from its hard power (military might) as it's trying to literally and figuratively flex it's striking capabilities over Taiwan and the US.

    • @Zejva
      @Zejva Před rokem +1

      The so-called "sissified" men are *NOT* straight men. Only a small minority of them are. Most of them are queer people who are forced to not be open about their orientation/gender identity and keep it as a secret. You probably know it better than me what kind of oppression/discrimination lgbtq kpop idols face after they come out. This is pretty much an lgbtq issue, this "canceling sissy men" will harm the lgbtq community(especially, gay men and even trans women since they're seen as "men" in the eyes of transphobes) more than anyone else and it'll barely affect straight men.

    • @fahmraktnul4279
      @fahmraktnul4279 Před rokem +6

      @@Zejva I'm not sure. In the context of East and Southeast Asia, I think now there's actually an expectation if not a pressure for men to beautify themselves because that's what women idolise. Otherwise, they're not handsome enough or are plain boring. I live in Thailand which is extremely open when it comes to LBGTs, so gay/ trans men can straight out be openly gay/ openly trans. Noone cares. Yet, many straight men are these so-called sissified men, because when you look at commercials and TV shows, all the supposedly handsome men look that way. The fact that women swoon over these men (and many certainly do) is all the more reasons for men especially young men to try to imitate. Even if the celebs themselves are not straight. People don't know that. They just know that it's what women or the "society" find handsome.
      Men from all the K-POP bands are essentially products that have been produced that way by their companies regardless of their own opinions, so I don't think whatever they actually are would manage to make its way to the public without their companies' approval.
      It could have been clearer had this video not mixed in the two groups. Many gay men from China are not a part of this subculture at all. I could be wrong though. Maybe these men are queers in China. It's also possible that those older men in power cannot distinguish between the two themselves and see this as a way to curb LGBT.
      One comment on the video pointed out that this could actually be the political issue of limiting foreign influence/ soft power in China. I think it's a plausible theory. Last year China also shut down a Japanese festival that was held by local businesses to sell Japanese and Japanese theme products.

      @@fahmraktnul4279 I don't know about that :/
      I think the main reason the government is banning/canceling "sissy" men is because they view their existence as "gay propaganda" and that they're promoting homosexuality. Russia, Turkey and some other countries has done something similar. For example, Russia canceled bts concert because they consider it as "lgbt propaganda" even though none of the bts members openly identify as queer(as far as I know).
      I also think being "sissy" is about how you act more than how you dress. For example, most kpop idols do look and 'dress' feminine but most of them definitely do not act feminine. They just behave like average basic cishet men. So, I don't really see them as "sissy/feminine" at all. They're barely any different than the guys in the west, Middle East in my eyes. Every region has its own beauty standards and men looking feminine might be the beauty standard in East Asian countries which is completely okay. I think I have a different understanding of the word "sissy" which is why your comment confused me.
      Also, I dont think Thailand and china is comparable to each other in terms of lgbt acceptance, so I'm not sure if that was a good example. I believe this banning "sissy men" will harm lgbt community, especially trans women, more than it'll harm straight men. Because it is a choice for those cishet men to dress feminine mainly because girls are into that, they can stop it whenever they want. However, it isn't a choice for trans women(I'm sure they're also labelled as "sissy men" in the eyes of conservative people)

      Its tiring and depressing mixed with anxiety, on to even have the feeling of need to explain the actual that, to other "misunderstand" people that apparently, "gay ≠ *sexual related things and issues, & whatsoever"
