  • This was our last "official" day on the water fishing in Baja in the Skin on Frame, Pedal Drive, Outrigger Canoe Prototype. The fishing was fantastic and we both have so much gratitude for this trip. Thanks for joining us.

    oh man, now how am I going to get my vicarious paddling in while having my morning coffee? Seriously, this series has been so good. I save them for when the house is quiet first thing in the morning and drink my coffee while you catch fish. Cannot wait for the full debrief on the boat. Thanks Brian and LIz :)

    Dorado is one that I've not caught, yet. Awesome fish. I get to fish the Gulf of Mexico about once per year. Twice or three times on good years. Awesome morning sky this day as well. Sunrise on the water is the best place to be-most every time.

    God! I mean I’m really curious now about the durability of the bottom of your boat bottom…again. What an incredible time! Thanks so much for everything 😅

      I’m gonna show the bottom close-up in the next video that we do in the studio!

    Just to make sure;
    It’s ok to drag a skin boat like you do over cobble stones and seashells?
    Or do you have some kind of rub rails below?
    Awesome fishing 🎣

      It really depends on the fabric and the coating, how the ends are armored and the specific surface. So for example, on this boat, I start out with 9 ounce ballistic nylon and coated with four layers of two-part polyurethane and then two extra layers on the bottom and then I wrap brass around the ends. With that layup, I feel comfortable, dragging it up and down, sand and smooth rocks and occasionally over something a little rougher, although if you treat it that way you’ll have to re-skin more often. They can definitely handle occasional scrapes with much more abrasive objects, but it just reduces the lifespan. I think the best way to think of it is very similar to a carbon Kevlar layup on a normal canoe. Most people wouldn’t drag that but some people will. It’s reasonably tough but not indestructible. Of course this is just my particular skin recipe. there’s a lot of skin on frame boats that will only survive a short while with other types of cloth and other types of coating. The next video we release will be specifically talking about the subject of durability and I’ll show the bottom really close up so you can check it out.
