Great to hear someone from the regiment speak out about this. As a former police family protection officer I've spent countless hours on fixed point duties dealing with curious members of the public and often being baited by them. It's sometimes difficult keeping one's cool. For these guards who have no real freedom of movement I feel they deserve more respect than the public give. It is a duty where pride kicks in, but the endurance must often be pushed to the limit - and that on its own deserves respect.
You say the full kit is uncomfortable (even the bulletproof vests are uncomfortable), but in either case it must be worse for the female guards. God Bless them all.
Personally - and I'm sure many would share my feelings - I would cut down on the number of tourists at any one time, and probably not have them wandering through the Bbarrack archway. We need the tourists, but we should make better efforts to prevent this constant annoyance to the guards AND their mounts!

@@mariahoulihan9483 You have asked two questions in two separate responses, but obviously have difficulty in understanding perfectly simple English.
"Police Family Protection Officer" means exactly what it says, i.e. the protection of a (vulnerable) family, usually at their home. The terminology changes from time to time, and I am going back many years to my time.
Why on earth would you think Traffic Duty in the context? I did not say "Point Duty," (normally termed "Points Duty" in the plural) which as you have rightly, but mistakenly interpreted as Traffic Duty; what I said was "Fixed Point Duty," which again means exactly that - one point as opposed to a "beat." A Fixed point could be at a front door, a garden gate, the corner of a street .... any single spot or confined space - sometimes referred to as a static point. These may not be terms you are familiar with, but nevertheless are terms that many older police officers will certainly know.....and not everything revolves around the USA as you seem to think.

It's just a case of a young lad trying to look big in front of his girlfriend. When I was in the Scots guards we used to get tourists coming right up to you on some of the public posts, mostly they would try and put their arms around you to get a picture, that's OK but when they try and belittle you that's a different matter. All you want to do is do your two hours without passing out then getting inside and get your kit off and relax. Two hours in the middle of summer with all your kit on takes some discipline I can tell you. I once did a stag in the middle of summer at St James palace and it was boiling hot, so hot it melted the polish and beeswax on my boots and burnt my face, when I took my bearskin off I had a white mark where the curb chain was. How I didn't faint I don't know, I spent the next four hours bulling my boots to get the shine back on. Talk about torture. 😢

Horses do one hour on sentry duty a day.
      It's not exactly demanding.

It’s such a lovely change to have someone who knows what they are talking about. Thank you for the information you gave . It makes my blood boil when the general public behave in such a disrespectful way . I also feel very uncomfortable when crowds, crowd around it is claustrophobic and must disturb the horses . I know they are trained . Are the swords very heavy?

Unfortunately social media has monetized being a jerk in public. Hopefully this kid has learned a lesson.

I may not be British, but it upsets me there are those who think they can make fun of the King's Guards. If I were to be there, I'd always show respect to the Guards and maybe give them a salute as a gesture of respect and gratitude for their service.

I wouldn't be surprised if the swords that the guards carry are actually sharp. They are real soldiers after all. They're allowed to carry weapons.

It was the guy in the group who shoved him who shouted to the young man don’t be so rude when he spoke to the female on the horse. I watch this a lot when I work in my garden during the day! I am amazed on how many visitors handle the people themselves whenever they become disrespectful to the guards! You should be proud of that!
