How the Oval forfeit changed cricket (10/25)

  • In 2006, during the fourth day of the fourth Test between England and Pakistan at The Oval, umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove ruled that the Pakistani team had been involved in ball tampering. The Pakistani players refused to take the field after the tea break in protest at the decision. After waiting two more minutes the umpires removed the bails and declared England winners by forfeiture. This was the first such end to a Test match in over 1000 Tests.

The important point should in fact be who are the ICC to change the result of a game!!!!
This gives dangerous precedent for them to chnage the result of any game as they see fit. This is what the MCC are against. In fact Michael Holding was so disgusted by this he resigned from his position in the ICC.

For those that think this match was a one off, it is different than those of us that had seen years of Daryl Hair making bad decisions against the Pakistan team. The team had asked ICC to stop Hair from umpiring in their matches. Not only did he make bad decisions, he was very regularly rude and sharp with the pakistand players while smiling with the opposition. Us fans would see who was umpiring and consider it a handicap. The team sheet mattered less than who was umpiring during these days. The reason the team reacted the way they did was pent up resentment over years of Hair being a dick.

England needed 33 runs to make Pakistan bat again, with only Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell & Chris Read remaining as good batsmen, all the bowlers were useless with the bat & Flintoff was missing. It was still a very good pitch to bat on with Yousuf in Bradmanesque form, he alone would have chased whatever England posted as target.
Darrell Hair was a racist who framed Pakistan by planting false evidence in order to falsely prove them guilty of crime. I think until about 2010, Umpires had a history of making biased decisions against Asian teams. Accusing Muralitharan of Chucking, Syndey test controversy with India followed by Monkey gate incident, and this game. Clearly in all three circumstances, Cricket was the loser!
