I'm going to add additional notes here as I get feedback:
1) The EXACT details of the One Year Plan are not critical. If you want to make a thing every 2 weeks, or every 1 month, or every day, that's perfectly okay. The point is to commit to a specific time interval, and to NEVER break that commitment over a long-perm period. As long as you're making a lot of stuff consistently, you will improve a shitload.
2) Remember that you can skip all of these steps by just breaking into a CZcamsr's house and stealing their 100,000 sub plaque
I’m not sure how much this video has helped me but I know I’m gonna start trying new things, because I don’t really like my job or what I’ve been doing up to this point so thanks doug!
Hi Doug I’m sure a lot of new creators will appreciate this video, keep up the good work (also love your streams)
I just started one of the best high-schools in my state and it's been really difficult and stressful and I've wanted to quit and stop but this video and you as a person has inspired me to keep trying and maybe use this video to either try to make content(probably not) but maybe just try to identify my skills set which could be beneficial for my life so anyway, thank you Doug your awesome

Hey Doug!
I don’t know if you remember me or not but I emailed you a long while ago asking about how you managed to find the content you wanted to make and you’re advice back to me was super important. It took me a looooong while to understand it, but I finally feel like I’m actually going in the right direction, and it’s because of the things you mentioned, so thank you so much.
The advice in this video is really important for anyone else wanting to do CZcams, I wish anyone reading this good luck!

But my last name is not Ramsy
I think huge part of Doug's channel identity is his relationship between him and chat because I've never seen an audience have it's own unique personality that not only is entertaining but rivals the power of the streamer
It’s like every video is a collab, but he’s collabing with chat- not the people, but the separate entity it becomes when you combine all those people into one big group
@Manipulative Slime and because chat is the main character.
This is a legitimately really good guide. I have actually never heard any of these views before and I think they are totally accurate. Not long ago, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do. I wanted to be an artist, no an animator, no I'm gonna be a CZcamsr, no no a scientist. At some point I decided on game developer and while I wasn't entirely sure about it, I think this sold me on the idea of that happening one day since I know what I can do naturally now.

1:39:59 summed up to... 1. Write Down Everything you ever been good at or enjoy. 2. After you have a list of like 25-50 things, dig deeper into What you REALLY LOVE about doing these 25-50 things"? 3. Divide the list into Categories. The categories should show you what your two skill sets are. 4. Use the two skill sets to make one new video each week for one year. Each week adding one new "ingredient". 5. Review each week's video to learn "what worked and what didn't work. What you enjoyed and what you disliked about that week's video. 6. In the end, you will get better if you don't keep making the same videos, but create your videos with your personal style.
This is perhaps the single greatest video concerning content creation I've seen. You always see people wanting to emulate what's already popped off, failing to recognize that if you create content that no one else is making, you have a monopoly. What's a better recipe for success? Digging for gold on a massive island with 10,000 people all sharing it, or setting sail towards a much tinier island, but you're the only one there putting your shovel to work.
Other guides will always tell new creators to ask themselves "would I watch my own video/stream?" That's one of the stupidest pieces of advice ever given because you don't exist in a vacuum, nor does the viewer.
The correct question you should be asking is "would I watch my own video/stream over everybody else in my niche". Yes, that question has far more stakes to it and is a metric that heightens the chances for failure, but it also gives you a fuckload of perspective on the amount of choice the average viewer has, and how a creator can best plant their flag.
Becoming a large content creator is an anomaly. Want to be one? Act like it. Fantastic video Doug.
Didn't expect someone whose content I really look up to comment on another of my inspirations. Keep up the good content, weezy. It got me into MVM and tf2 as a whole, and I thank you for that!
There's a lot of value in this video for creators that have been around for a while as well! I love listening to people talk ab out the experience of being a creator and how to do it better so this is awesome

I think one super super important thing to take from this video is in fact the food analogy. The one thing that especially stood out to me at the end around 1:27:26, and which I outlined in my notes in huge bold underlined font, is this:
YOU ARE MAKING A MENU, NOT A MASTERPIECE
Don't spend forever trying to make everything as awesome as can be, creating something the world over will fight for, whether in your channel or each video. That's called virality, and you can't decide when that happens.
Make a menu you'd like to eat from every day. It's the regulars that make a restaurant thrive.
Man, this came out at the perfect moment for where I currently am, going through a discouragement period. I made some videos when I was 13 and almost 10 years later, started to upload again last year, stopping for a few months, and being more or less consistent since 5 months ago. Comparing earlier ones to current videos is comparing day to night and I still feel I've barely scratched the surface. All this is to say, thank you doug, I don't think I've sat down, watched and really paid attention to an hour+ long video in years, let alone take notes. Hell, I don't even comment on videos but this one actually resonated so hard I felt compelled to. Once again, cheers
Godspeed, Guts from Berserk.
Haha me you are in the same boat!
It's been a month since your last upload. Don't quit, keep going.
@@MMDAQ Hehe thanks for checking out my stuff as well as your kind words, I really appreciate it! Happy to say I've no intention of quitting, things have just taken a backseat as I work on some big exciting stuff
@@Toxena Really glad to hear it, hoping your work pays off.
This is advice that can be applied to a lot of things in life. Relationships, jobs, hobbies... School doesn't let us try things and fail and learn, they expect perfection from the beginning and teach us that we are worthless if we aren't. Parents can put this pressure on us too. So it's always helpful to learn that trying and failing is ok; it's good and healthy, and how we learn. This is been immensely helpful 😊
Thank you DougDoug for sharing this!
btw Doug, in case you read this~
I am curious about your opinion on the balance between what you love to do and what you're good at, specifically when trying to find your two skill sets.
It seems in this video, you're more leaning on "what you love to do" ?
I'm wondering what's your thought on that.
Thank you!
Cheeseburger
on a live stream he explained by that is that its something that you love doing or that it energizes you and it comes naturally to you
I think the key takeaway from this is that if you can find what you really love to do you'll improve rapidly at it. So even if you aren't actually good at it, if doing it feels effortlessly and exciting then you'll get good really fast because it won't make you tired or exhausted when you are practicing, learning and improving at it. Like, when he was talking about Video Editing. He was brand new, but as he learned it was feeling effortlessly and like everything just made sense because it fell into that 'skillset' of storytelling that he realized he had.
What a satisfying sequel to DougDoug's health rant.
Between this and the health updates, I would love a Doug chats channel or something where you sit in front of the camera for an hour or 2 each week or month.

This was an increadible watch. Not because I want to become a content creator, but because I've spend forever on thinking what I'm good at and what I want to do with my life. Your system of focussing the two things you're really good at, how to find them and combining them and the process of improving on that core concept, is increadible. Specifically your description of video editing and how easy it was, how much sense it made to you compared to other things you tried really resonated with me. I will try and apply this idea into my everyday mentality to find what I am truly happy doing in my life. Thank you Doug.
Huh, should have looked for your comment before writing mine, you've written exactly what I was trying to say. Completely agree man 🤟
I agree completely, this is just great life advice and really opened my eyes to how I am kinda forcing myself down a path that kind of hits one of my 2 skillsets but doesn't really encompass it, and really provoked some thought on how I can adjust things to better suit me and my natural skillset to where I can be happy and comfortable. I really feel like the first 40 minutes of the video is something everyone roughly like 18-30 should hear, because it is honestly applicable to everyone in that stage where you need to figure things out, and then the 2nd part of the video is something literally everyone needs to hear because its just proper goal setting and maintaining yourself throughout that goal with the mindset that the only failure is not attempting something and quitting, because every time you do anything you can take something away from that and improve... just overall great advice for anyone who is struggling to find a place in the world.
Idk if you still check the comments, but I wanted to share that this is the most valuable video I have discovered for content creation. Most big creators have the most surface level guide to CZcams, and even a channel like Colin and Samir, I consider to be junk tv about CZcams celebrities, not informational.
I think I have a different interpretation of what you’ve explained with the skill mix. I personally feel that if every human being wanted a successful CZcams channel for themselves, the audience is there waiting for them. BUT the skill mix is something I’m going to explore as I realize it helps a person to hone in specifically rather than just randomly slap shit at the wall like I’ve been doing.
What a high value video. Idk how I discovered it but I’m so glad I did. Thank you!

A very necessary video for aspiring creatives, detailing a lot of ideas many have had but haven’t been able to articulate. With enough videos on how to make and market content to last a lifetime, one going into what content to make is critically important.
Anyway, gonna go start my CZcams channel where I explain video games with food. I think it's gonna be big.
Great video, so glad you actually did it with food! And keep in mind, 10-15% returning doesn’t mean 90% of people dislike your content. There’s are lot of people in the middle, who might enjoy it, but don’t choose to watch more of it over the content they love. Or maybe they would want to watch more, but they don’t click on one of your videos once, and CZcams just stops showing more of your videos to them. As a viewer, I can say both have happened to me.
I think that the skill mix becomes entertaining when one skill is something that interests a viewer, and one that creates a niche. The interest is very common to multiple people, but it is also the thing that gives a niche meaning. The niche is the thing that separates from the interest.
For you, I think your interest is the storytelling of gaming and your niche is usually to use something (code, derailing a story on a tangent, weird metaphors of food) to create chaos and keeps an audience engaged.
I know I can’t really say what your videos are for you, but I think that that’s the formula of making an entertaining thing, and I think that’s why I’m still here years later.
I might be young, but I do have a different perspective on his skill set idea. I feel like people are built more like air-dry clay: They start off with the ability to try and build their skills to what they want, but without any extra motivation or want to continue the content, your skill ceiling will plateau. Of course, most people go for what they want, and if they feel themselves improving over time without much faulting, then I believe they can find their way.
Basically, the idea of being essentially "fated" to have skill sets just doesn't sit right with me. We're all very moldable at a young age, and it really just depends where we take ourselves.
@@squiddu I prefer your analogy over mine, I don’t think there is a formulaic way to understand growth as an artist of any kind, but I meant it was an simple way to find out how you can keep an audience engaged while avoiding becoming stale.
@@jujt2258I'm definitely a fan of categorizing skill sets and finding what you work best with. Simplifying what I guess is the most brainstorm-y phase of becoming a content creator is a very good thing and I would latch onto that; I only detest the idea of it being fated.
Yeah I’m a good writer and photographer and not sure how to spin that into content. I already have a growing IG for my photos but I’m not really interested in teaching or making content surrounding how I take photos because I literally go on intuition. Don’t have a clue what aperture is.
I guess writing can be used to make stories around stuff
14:51 really resonated with me. It’s the same story for me right now: a high schooler set on music production. I got FL Studio almost a year ago, and I currently spend all my free time working on getting better. However, there are those few, like in your experience, who just understand music production on a different level. The ingredients of the song structure actually making sense in a composition to them, to create that meal. For me though, I’m just scrambling to make something that would actually sound good, working hard for many nights to make something incomparable to what my peers could make in significantly less time. Trying to get a grasp of something that isn’t one of your essentials in your “skill set” is a challenge I’ve faced for a while. There isn’t a coherent workflow in my experience for music production, as hard as I try to understand it. Upon opening FL Studio, I still don’t know how to start on a project.
I just wanted to mention that all of this is very true, and I’m glad I’m not the only one who had that experience. It’s genuinely a sad lesson to teach people that you “won’t be the best at x and y,” but it’s reality.
I said this to another person, but it may help you to:
Maybe try adapting your music through one of your skillsets, to create something that you're both passionate about and that you're innately good at? It'll be unique as well, so you'll already be within a niche that can be exploited.
@@Oliver-wv4bd That definitely sounds like something I need to look into, I’m definitely going to try it out. Thanks for that :)

Same. Her videos are really something. They are just really cutsy and fun.
honestly this video is so helpful not only if you wanna be a content creator, but also just for figuring out what you wanna do in life in general
Thank you so much for this. I don't have any interest in becoming a content creator, but this can be applied to so many things outside of that. Honestly, what I want is to get in to the habit of exercising, and I've failed and stopped so many times. I'm going to try new exercises, mark off every day I exercise on a calendar, and take note of what I enjoy, don't enjoy, what works, and what doesn't work. With my depression I face a lot of challenges maintaining constant motivation to do things and I have no idea if I'll keep up with this, but I'm gonna try. Maybe I'll check back in in a year if it worked for me.
How about checking back in 12 days - how are things going dude?
its been a year, whats up man
This was a great breakdown Doug and is very similar to my jounrey on making this my carrer! CZcams is the best thing that's ever happend to me but it's almost never an overnight thing for most of us.
This was really. REALLY good. You hit the nail on the head at the beginning. People will say you need good content as an afterthought, but that really is the MAIN thing.
I've been doing CZcams for about a year and a half, and I've loved it. I am a massive history buff, but more specifically, I am obsessed with tanks and armored vehicles. I've seen the youtube sphere around that genre and its all very bland. Sure the occasional tank education video is entertaining or funny, but nobody has taught about tanks and history, while being AN ENTERAINER. That's what I want to do. I want to be a Ludwig, or Jshlatt, or Atrioc, or Doug Doug. But I just love tanks. I want to be the energetic and annoyingly passionate tank friend that my enthusiast audience wishes they had. I want to talk about tanks, play tank games, play other games while talking about tanks, talk with other youtubers about tanks, discover new things about tanks. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING tanks, I want to do that.
I understand I am niche, I'm not trying to hit a million subs. But if you like tanks or history, I want you to really see something special in how I express my love for the subject.
The hardest part of any project of mine, is starting. I think I have creative ideas, its just getting the execution right. I have to research for some of my videos, I have to write scripts, I have to edit, my larger scale projects can take a whole month to make. But I really like your one week idea. And I think I may just buy a calendar and incorporate your steps into my daily routine. I know my content, style, and audience isn't like yours, and your tips may not be the best for my specific situation. But I really need that discipline right now, and as you say, all I can do is learn.
Thank you Doug Doug, here's to a bright future on CZcams!
Even though I have no interest in tanks, I would watch your tank videos if they were explained in some wacky and zany way. Lean into your skillsets
Doug this is a truly amazing video. This video isn’t just a good guide to make good content but also has amazing advice about how you can help live your best life. This video has touched me personally and i am definitely rewatching this again soon. Thank you for putting this out into the world!
With over 1k comments i dont think hardly anyone will see this. I just stumbled on this video and decided to listen to it in the background while im programing. I hate to say it but you do make a good point. I tried so many different skill like music and art but no matter how much effort i put in but i never could improve much. People seems to love the stories and blogs i post online but i was super shy about that. However i found my first skillset i was very good at as early as first grade, which was I was great with math and numbers and I would of made perfect grades if i did all of my homework. However, all of my other grades were below average and i do not know how i would apply my math skill where i would be happy. Thanks for the video and it will definitely get me into thinking about my life choices
While I'm still in a state of not being 100% on what i want to do with my life, the advice about the skillsets and finding things I could possibly be really good at and enjoy was a massive help. If nothing comes from this, then at least I have this as comfort and knowing that I can at least find what I'm good at and enjoy, so thank you very much Doug.
"Everybody has 2 skillsets that you are great at." Me who''s skills are rating evaporated milk and finding suspicious bits of rock. : Why am i still here, just to suffer.
I've heard a lot of what is mentioned and have been applying it. I'm just waiting for one of my videos to hit algorithm. But thank you. These ideas do help and further reinforce to be unique. I've personally have been watching you for like 2 years and have always loved you content. Thank you for the help and much love anyone else and good luck to anyone else also reading this.
I'm on my own content creation journey right now, and I found a ton of what you said to be very helpful, if not very true. It's so hard to gauge how you're doing at any point in time with how complex CZcams is, but at the end of the day, I agree that if you really have the passion for the platform and for video content, you can make it if you/your content is interesting enough. Anyway, back to editing...
Honestly Doug,
when I clicked the video, I didnt really care for being a content creator personally.
I thought "well, hearing Doug talk about something will probably entertain me for a bit while cleaning".
But hearing you talk about this stuff you're so invested in and care about was just really really nice.
Especially when you talked about your past and what you had to do to get where you are now.
The part in which you explained what the 100k plaque ment to you made me tear up, really.
Just .. stay true to yourself and the way you are and hopefully you'll keep entertaining us bunch a weirdos for some more time.
Happy to be a part of your journey.
This video is extremely insightful Doug, thank you. I share the same health issues as you, and the side of your skill set to create funny scenarios to solve with others. Which makes you all the more a HUGE inspiration to me as a growing creative. You're much appreciated man. Keep doing nonsensical, insanity invoking content, we're all here for it. ❤️
Hey Doug. First off, thank you for taking practically 2 hours to sit down and make this video. As someone who recently started making videos (like literally only a month ago), this was super beneficial and eye opening. Before I even posted my first video, I watched Eric's video on ice melting and listened about how to make good thumbnails and titles. But even with that advice, it still felt like something wasn't right about the videos I was making. I was, more or less, looking at other creators in the same genre and trying to mimic their style of content with a small twist here or there. However, after listening to your thoughts, advice, and theories on skillsets and Italian spaghetti burgers, I realized why it felt that way, even if I believe the content I made was as good or almost as good as those other creators. Throughout the last half of your video, I found myself thinking of different skillsets I might have, how to apply them, and if a spaghetti burger would actually taste good. Even thought of a couple of pretty unique video ideas I could potentially make in the near future.
Secondly, thanks for just being an awesome dude and amazing content creator. Your videos always have me laughing out loud and it's always a great time. I never manage to catch your streams, but I happily wait for your next upload, because I know the next however many minutes are gonna be super entertaining when it drops. Hopefully one day I'll win the lottery and make you proud by serving the best Italian spaghetti burger ever created.
Hey Doug, as a small creator this was very helpful and had lots of great suggestions! Videos like this are incredible for people with channels that are still trying to grow and still had lots of entertainment value, especially as I am a doug doug fan myself. Keep up the good work, and don't forget to do your laundry.
This video is so true, as i just realized that it is 1 year old. Thank you doug, very inspirational. I was there when your explosion really started and ill still be here, for what is to come.
Thank you so much for making this video! This was just what I needed to hear and I think this will steer my channel in the right direction. I guess I'll see in one year!
Thank you, Doug. I recently did something like this with a project that I've sorta always wanted to do (no competitors, but I thought it was sorta invalid at first because of no competitors). But I was not correct! It got the attention of someone important and a number of people have really liked it. And I'm starting to learn the lessons about consistency too. Wow, I'm thinking too, there's this goal I'd set at the beginning that felt basically impossible for me, but it's so much closer in reach than I really ever could have imagined it to be. And we're getting closer to it every time!
I'm going to continue to watch through the rest of this, this is really good stuff! Much love!
This video came on autoplay as i was struggling to draw something really badly, and i legitimately was able to step back and start again and by the end of the video ive made something im actually quite proud of. This video applicable to so much more than content creation in its core message and beliefs
Agreed
Gonna be listening to this repeatedly throughout the day and really get the creative juices and self reflection flowing. This kind of introspective thinking is something I hadn't considered but it seems so obvious. Was gonna reboot on CZcams next month but now I have significantly more to ponder on short notice and I want to make sure it sticks. Thank you for the awesome advice and I'll try to be back to this vid in a year to tell you how it's going
This is genuinely an amazing resource. I have learned so much just 30 minutes in, thank you Doug!
I absolutely love the philosophy of combining your talents not to be the best but to be the only. For ppl who want to look into this idea more look up the phrase “talent stacking”
The two things you've identified in your own work are exactly the things I noticed from you, and they drew me in. You've got a strong voice and a great creative vision!
Thanks for making this Doug. Also loved the Coach reference. But this advice helped me realize I do want to be a content creator and this will help me get my foot in the door and you've been my favorite content creator for a while so thanks for the great advice!
I love how Doug says "This isn't about marketing" and then immediately gives a perfect analogy for the marketing concept of Product Differentiation
I really think that this video is the thing I've been looking for. For around the past few years, I've always felt sorta lost whether it comes to my schoolwork or my personal favorite hobbies that I'm pretty good at. I wanna apply that 1 year plan to a few things and see if it works. Thanks Doug. I don't wanna apply it to video creation as it's not the thing I'm currently focusing on and enjoying, but I will sure as hell apply it to my other things.
This is fantastic, much appreciated Doug! Hard to understand without any food analogies, but I think I got the general idea of it
I love this video so much! Thank you for making it, it has helped me get so much motivation to just keep on pushing through the tough times :)
Thanks so much for the advice Doug! It was really helpful as someone who plans to be a content creator.
Something that Doug doesn’t really touch up on is that you can get away with only using one skill set if you’re using it in such an insanely niche genre that nobody else could replicate effectively. Using the McElroys as an example, they cohost a third podcast, “Till Death Do Us Blart” in which they take great pride in telling you at the start of each episode that it’s the only annual podcast solely based on the the discussion of Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Their improv skills flow really well for such an insane premise and the concept of an annual podcast that you cannot leave is so batshit insane conceptually that anybody else who tried to do something like that will have a hard time taking off because they don’t have the skills to compete or any of the intrigue that TDDUB has at a first glance. It’s an inherently funny idea that is only elevated by the unique set of skills from the McElroys
This is also an excellent guide for writers. Thank you so much. I am currently a decent content creator for writing and found this at a standstill. Thank you so much!
I listened to this while I was working at my internship, and the specific steps and advice you have given are super informative. I don't know what I will be creating just yet, but it is going to be awesome. This is also very helpful because I haven't had a goal in the past three or so years. Thank you for giving me a place to start!
Doug your amazing, going to apply these ideas as soon as I can! Thank you for your hard work and great advice
I have been wanting to get into content creation for a while and I really glad you made this video! I think I talk by alot of pepole when I say thank you
I love how food has been a consistent analogy for as long as youve been on the platform (it seems!)
I agree with the 2 skills thing, my brother is really really good at music creation, and even though I play both bass and guitar, i could never come up with some of the songs hes made effortlessly - In college his end assignment is to make an album, and hes already done 2 five song EPs and a couple of singles before even knowing about the final project just because he had enough content for them all. Its really good to see, i hope he takes off. Ive not watched the full video yet but if theres anything that comes up related to him i will 100% share it :)
This has to be one of the best guides for anything, I have ever seen.
A lot of what of what talk about can also be applied outside content creation aswell.
This was the best, most informational, well said video I have ever watched on youtube. All 1.5 hours just packed with tips and guides that will make you think differently. I feel like I was sort of on the path that this video talks about, but now I see that 100x clearer. Thank you DougDoug
Kyle Hill said it best: “Autism is my superpower.”
My hyper focus and unyielding perseverance combined with my natural aptitude for seeing patterns allowed me to become great at predicting the stock market. Celebrating 10 years this month.
Thank you for this Doug
As a person who has struggled to decide what I want to do in life and how I want my content to evolve this video has made it much clearer. I’ve been a fan for a while and I’m so happy I saw this video on my feed, as a fairly new content creator I will definitely be implementing this strategy later on! 😊
been needing something like this for a while, will be sure to give it a watch!
This was incredibly helpful. I went into this not really being sure if I was going to learn anything, but I feel so much more confident now. I genuinely took 4 pages of notes while watching this and I think that knowing my skill mix is going to be a very valuable asset to have. Thank you Doug.
My first Doug Doug video was the Skyrim cheese video. I’ve never played Skyrim, but the jokes were zaney and the plot was oddly satisfying and I can’t believe more than 15% of viewers don’t become Doug addicts. You are so intelligent and talented and I am so glad you are here delivering us piping hot Sushi Burrito content ❤
You've opened my eyes on what it means to be a content creator. I quit content creation in March 2022 because I didn't see quick success. But you've motivated me to look at my interests and figure out what the right type of content I should be putting more effort into. Thanks for shining the light for smaller content creators that are struggling to figure out what type of content is successful and meaningful. Loved the video!
Just subbed! You've got this dude!
@@Oliver-wv4bd thanks so much buddy! unless you're talking to dougdoug haha
@@dddrewsky Haha no ofc I'm not talking to Doug! Very best of luck to you, I'm interested in seeing what you put out next.
@@Oliver-wv4bd oh thanks so much! I'll def try to check you out too. appreciate the kind words!
I love the way you talk, you make it sound easy.
I feel like this video was a lot of preparation and effort so I really appreciate it. Thank you for this
I kept getting linked videos by the algorithm of yours just like... a month ago. And every damn title, "When I say, 'Cop', the cops try to kill me" had me saying, "What the hell... this is stupid." but then I watched it... and another one... and another... and I can't stop watching your videos.
The humor speaks to me, the chaos is my vibe, the analogies are perfect. I played Mario Party with my kids because I watched a video of you comparing it to a restaurant.
And now I'm super motivated to at least give some videos I've been thinking about a try. They're a bit of a blend of a couple things I enjoy and hopefully I can capture both at least pretty dang well. Thank you for the entertainment and motivation!
As someone who's already found their main style uploading on and off for a couple years, hearing my favorite content creator say these things and share his experiences is a huge motivation booster to give it a shot. This is giving me the push I need to finish the projects I've half-finished. Thank you, doug.
Such an educative video. While I certainly do not plan on becoming a content creator anytime soon, this has however really both changed and improved the way I look at things from a different perspective.
Doug thank you for this video, I'm 21 and I have been struggling with the exact questions of what I want to do with my life and what I enjoy doing and where I am going. I've gone into debt to learn skills that while I am good at them, I don't enjoy nearly as much as I thought I would. I was struggling for awhile with figuring out what I'm gonna do, and this video I feel has the potential to really help me as a person, I genuinely believe you gave some of the best life advice I've heard. I think this video applies to everyone not just content creators
This is an amazing video. I'm very happy I kept subbed to you through this crazy journey after initially finding you through Hearthstone. Now to go and figure out my own skill mix.
TRUE
oh hi there :)
Hey doug, I know this was a few months ago, but im just now finding this and im finding this to be critically useful. I am currently making content that sometimes feels like a complete swing and a miss for me and now I can reflect on specific questions and help me locate why it was that way, and also guide myself to find better ways. Doing what im doing now has always been my dream and im excited to use this guide and advice to further my content and growth, honestly thank you
I’m not a content creator but I watched this video because I really enjoy your work and I was interested to hear what you had to say. I’m going through a transitional period in my life and I’ve decided to do a 180. I’m going back to school to make a huge career change and it’s intimidating as hell but I found a lot of great advice in this video and I even took some notes on how I could apply this to my situation. Nothing is easy, everyone struggles but finding the thing I’m good at will be worth it. I appreciate you putting this out there, I think it’s something that I needed to hear. Thank you for the inspiration and best of luck to you going forward.
I've been wanting to try some new things, including content creation, but was always held back by the perfectionist, "gotta do it right" force I grew up with in school. Recently I've gotten stuff talking about pushing yourself and trying new things (including a video that was inspired by this video, shoutout Riifushi), and I've been trying to figure out what I want to do given how full my life is with commitments that I can't really drop.
Now I do have time that I don't use, and I could figure out what to do moving forward, but I'm not. All of these things are putting drive behind me to focus and improve.
I might burn out tomorrow, or next week, or next decade. We'll find out pretty soon which of those is closest, and I may never enter the content creation field that you're targeting with your advice here, but the generalizability of your ideas are inspiring. So thanks for the inspiration and drive to get a move on, Doug. Hopefully I can check in with you one day with positivity, or maybe I'll be too busy doing my own thing to double back. We shall see, but than you man.
This video couldn't have come at a better time. Was just venting to a friend about my content and how to improve it and things I can do differently.
I have no desire to be a content creator, yet I watched this whole thing. It's inspiring and good advice for almost anything in life.
Genuinely a very helpful video. I'm not a content creator but I've always considered it and this really helped me kind of shape the ideas that I had into more competent thoughts about what I'd want to do if I pursued this. It also really helped me just figure out what I'm actually good at and enjoy. I've never gone through the process of writing down and analyzing things that I enjoy and why I do. It was a fun and insightful process and I'm very glad I did it. Keep on Douging DougDoug.
These are exactly the words i had to hear at the moment. I'm trying to be a content creator about cosplay and i've been sitting on the idea of starting youtube for years. Recently i've managed to produce a video and i'm starting to take things more seriously. Hearing you saying all the things about finding what you're great at and actually putting in the hours really had me motivated. Maybe you didn't think about it, but also the age at what you did all of this is really motivating. I'm 25 and sometimes i feel like my life is already over and that i'll never be able to become anything else then what i studied for; but hearing your story really made me realize that it's not necessarily too late to start seriously and to put a real effort into it. Thank you Doug!
i genuinely love when you do this type of videos! really interesting (sry my bad english im italian)
doug being a mcelroy fan makes so much sense, i love both doug and the mcelroys because theres a lot of overlap in their storytelling/comedy skills
Hi! I was able to meet you at TwitchCon and the main thing I spoke to you about was this video. Honestly, the best video and most important one I’ve ever watched when it comes to content creating. I currently stream but plan on taking a break because I’m just not happy. But this is the plan I need. I’m going to start again and try again. Thank you again for making this.
Thank you Doug. I've looked through this video a few times now and have done the exercises. Coming up with the name this week and going to do my first video by next Friday :)
This is genuinely fantastic knowledge - not even just for youtube and content creation, but even in general good advice on how to make interesting and engaging creative works overall. Between this and some of the great advice on the health update video recently, I'm starting to think doug has a hidden secret talent in giving some damn good advice in clear and understandable ways
as a new content creator, i'm gonna be trying to work on these ideas as I make my content. thank you very much DougDoug!
Doug, you're awesome.
And I mean that in the literal sense, like from the consistent quality of your content, to constantly improving and creating new ideas, to engaging your community in ways very few have managed, you're just awesome.
I'm so glad I found your channel.
your speech pattern feel alot like my own when i get going on a topic i can naturally talk about and gave me a fire to get to actual work on making videos instead of just making one video, a couple shorts here and there with little effort. great job man, youve earned a sub and ill keep coming back to see what else youre doing now
