"Auferstanden aus Ruinen" ("Risen from Ruins") is a German patriotic song that was the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic during its existence from 1949 to 1990. The music was composed by Hanns Eisler, and the lyrics were written by Johannes R. Becher.

Auferstaden Aus Ruinen actually matches the melody of Deutschlandlied! That means its possible to add the lyrics of auferstaden aus ruinen to the german anthem as the 4th stanza, just without the „über deutschland scheint” part since that line doesnt match the melody

Not always, from 1949-1973 the lyrics were official and used. From 1973 until 1989 they played the anthem only instrumentally because of the references for a unified Germany and from 1989 to 1990 the lyrics were brought back again.

In Hungary we respect East Germany or former DDR. Our tourist industry was built on them. They gave us the best quality in the eastern block. Westerners don't know what I am talking about but for example Trabi, Wartburg, pots from Leipzig. Even the vaccums from east germany were better then from any other countries! We opened our border to them when they needed and we never forget these good things! Maybe this is better for you germans if you are united but for us Hungary the DDR is just as nostalgic as for the east germans. Respekt aus Ungarn!

USSR was so weird. An imperialist force with inverted pyramid of oppression were Russians had probably the worst quality of life compared to anyone else in eastern bloc. Goods from DDR were considered as treasures.

The lyrics are even more beautiful for those who speak German. Its one of the best anthems out there. No politics, but doing what an anthem should, make you proud of the nation and make clear the people stand together.

the metrics of the DDR anthem are the same as those of the actual German anthem which hasn't been a coincidence when it was composed. in other words, you could make a second stanza with these words to the actual tune.

Though this song has a communist background, I really enjoy the tune and melody. In my opinion, it has more meaning, speaking that the translation of "Auferstanden aus Ruinen," translates to, "Rising from the Ruins." In which it pretty much did rise from the ruins from 1945.

Note : The anthem was sung without any lyrics in East Germany , they used the anthem with musical tone only.
Also note that the lyrics stated "United Fatherland" which shows about various steps that were taken during 1945 to 1949 for reunification , But when the West rejected Stalin's March Note then the hope for reunification was extinguished , and Hence the anthem was sung without any lyrics

It would have been nice if the proposal to combine both Auferstanden Aus Ruinen and Das lied der Deutschen as one anthem after unification been accepted by then West Germany
But instead, West German Military Civil Occupational Administration secided to annex the lawful lands of East Germany instead, along with destroying everything it had.

To bad this anthem isn't used as the current German anthem because it represent the germans rebuilding their homeland.
The current one is a bit better because it traces back to the old Prussian Empire and the creation of the German state. This was also good.
I agree, but use the tune with other lyrics, this one shows too much scars and symbolizes that Germany had gone after a gruesome war with them being the villain.

I'm Canadian and my Grandfather has a friend named Wolf who was born in the final months of the Nazi Regime in Germany. His father was a soldier captured by the British and spent the rest of the war in Scotland. After the war his home and family ended up in the Soviet occupation zone that became East Germany. The British gave their German POW's a choice, return to Germany or stay in the country where they were held as POW's. Wolf's father stayed in Scotland because he didn't want to be in the Soviet zone (probably feared that the Soviets would kill him for being in the army and spent time in the Eastern front). Wolf and the rest of the family lived in East Germany for a few years before escaping to West Germany and reuniting with his father in Scotland sometime before 1950.
