Like Angela Merkel, she grew up in East Germany, and as a historian offers a very detailed and balanced telling of life in the DDR. It's really recent too, just came out sometime earlier this year.

Ey EoinnyToast, just to remind you: I am a native German (ok i was born in Poland but that doesn't matter) and I learned much about the GDR in school. Nothing about poverty there, the people were doing fine except they wanted to see their families in the west.
