Some people don’t enjoy the skill in ventriloquism, but I think it’s HILLARIOUS because the jarring nature of when he talks/sings in his real voice, and isa just Good
I would pay damn good money to see Jeff Dunham preform this song. 😂
When he talks in his own voice he kinda sounds like Harry Shearer
Oh so his lips actually don’t move in this version
•Chickens8 • almost
Lol
he’s really good though!!
Since the leads are wearing mic's, they don't need as much effort to project their voices. On Broadway, they wouldn't use microphones, so they would have to project their voices more. Of course, in live theater, you don't have camera close-ups so you would barely notice his lips move, but as pointed out in other comments, part of the joke/humor is that you can see his lips move.
I think I saw his lips move once, maybe twice. Ruined the whole musical.
I still can't go over the amount of people complaining about the ventriloquism. The play is meant to be a vaudeville so it makes sense for the actor to actually do the ventriloquism if he can and he still moves his mouth around and talks for her. There were even people complaining about the long note? WHAT???
I love it! I saw the actor in the Korean version of this number doing it so well and it made me happy to see.
The whole point of the number is that Billy is orchestrating the whole thing, what better way to show that than him literally putting words in Roxie’s mouth?
the woman does say almost.... plus you want to see it done with true ventriloquism look for the Korean production on youtube czcams.com/video/u0mU5IS6gcc/video.html Choi Ja Rim actually DOES ventriloquism in the number - turns out he had trained in his younger days..
Theeeeeeeeee...................eeeeeeee.........eeeeeee........ gun
Flomnib The Almighty THE NOTE WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE
im glad im not the only one who didn’t like the note
The vibrato was a bit much and it did go a bit all over the place. Props to him for sustaining it tho
I actually liked that because it was clear that the character (Billie) was showing off and it wasn't meant to be taken seriously
@@b.d6642 very true tho man…as a musician that tuning had my ears pleading 💀
Loving this recording. Really commit to the ventriloquist aspect of the performance.
I actually like how in this version it seems that roxy is participating with him much more
Very nice, she is good and he has a remarkable tenor voice. But after seeing the movie first, I'm spoiled and now expect something like the movie scene every time I see a performance of this number, though that's impossible to do on stage.
One thing I realized lately is that in the stage musical, the lawyer Flynn is actually a lover of Mary Sunshine, the female reporter who's in many scenes. That's not clear at all from the movie, where she was played by Christine Baranski.
yeah we're doing this musical in my high school and people are constantly joking that the two are in a relationship
Mary Sunshine is a man in drag in the stage productions. There's a reveal during the trial. They left all of that out of the movie.
This is impressive from a technical standpoint, with the vocal throwing and all, but I think it misses the point of the original musical--the fact that we SEE Billy's lips move during other variations of this number highlights just how little he actually cares about going above the law, as well as how blind--or complicit--the press corps is in his form of legal theater. It kind of robs the underlying subtext of the number by having him, ironically, actually be skilled at ventriloquism.
Still, great rendition, and incredibly, incredibly fun to watch.
Station 5 I agree, it still has the subtext though of what you’re talking about, however in this version it’s just a little more complex to understand (especially if someone hasn’t watched other versions)
100% agree with this critique. His drawn out final note was way too over the top, also.
@@JM-fc9gm I think that's the point. Billy Flynn is someone who enjoys attention and being in the spotlight
Thanks for typing all of that out so I don't need to
Well Mama did say notice how his mouth almost never moves which kinda alludes to ventriloquism here, so it's not much of a surprise he actually does ventriloquism during this song, compared to most versions where his lips move more
The change of tone in Billy’s voice is so fucking funny-
Timestamp?
@@b.d6642 I might be wrong but I think they just mean between the ventriloquism and his own singing, so the whole song I guess
The only thing I feel miss from this is the ventriloquist dropping the appearances in the last "when we both reached for the gun" before the big dance and the finale. Like, it was always my favourite part of the prestation, how after having well crafted this story and made Roxy says it, he drops the act when the word is finally out as truth, because whatever he does now, everyone knows the lie and accept it as truth.
Other than that, boy was this really amazing !
I love this piece, one of my two most favourite songs from Chicago and the most fun to play. I know both the lyrics and the music by heart as I am a pianist trained in classical as well as modern music by a professional theatre and philharmonic orchestra piano player and I can honestly say this “are you kidding?” is the best one out there (and yes, that is the best part as far as I am concerned by which I judge all performances of this song). And for that alone, it deserves every bit of recognition.
Excellent observation, I got to see Gwen Verdon perform this many many times (I was an usher in my HS/college days).
I agree this interpretation was excellent. The "are you kiddin'" needs to be cynical and totally in Roxie's character, or it doesn't anchor the performance. If that's the right analogy?
He’s an amazing Billy; love his voice!
Do half of these commenters complaining about the production realize this is nothing new?
This is the same production/ general direction/ costumes of the 1996 revival which brought the musical back into public eye and is the definitive version.
I love this playful skit and song. The actors did a great job!
the fucking barking at sunshine made me cackle like a witch
Best acting ive ever seen for a BF. Sad that he was out of breath at the end but it must have been an isolated case
I mean he was moving around a lot beforehand, and probably has been performing a lot in the days leading up to it.
I interpret it as Billy’s true talent is only really his manipulation, and that in and of himself he’s not all that impressive. I know it was an accident but I feel it could easily be treated as part of the act!
Great performances!
This is hilariously spectacular
Its super amazing. Reminds me of 4 years ago memory. Very miss them.
I like almost all the versions but I can't deny, the Brazilian version of this music it get me everytime
Perfection ❤
A lot of people think they hold a definitive opinion on whether this was a good version or not. Billy was very skilled, that's hard to deny, but it's really a matter of taste whether you liked his real ventriloquism or not.
Love THIS
This is amazing
I like he is doing actual ventriloquy
Absolutely 💯 Fabulous ❤🎉
Oh my gosh. I saw Brent Barret do it many years ago. Excellent. His face here looks, well, different.
I think the Billy in this one actually detracted away from the whole thing. The true ventriloquism actually stifled the performance
U heard mama tho. Notice how his mouth almost never moves. It is basically a ventriloquist act so it helps if ur lips don't move as much to make it look convincing
@@eljordinio7647 But Billy Flynn is supposed to not care about the law, so the audience needs to see his lips moving. So they know he's feeding her lines
@@Katie-ez2um well it’s pretty obvious it’s not her voice
@@andrewbrasfield1104 that’s not the point, of course the audience knows what’s going on. However, it’s about the art of how you portray the story. Besides, him doing the whole thing without moving his lips really limits his abilities to hit certain notes.
@@kyleneopperman6186 this is my problem with the dedication to ventriloquism in this version. especially the "we both we both we both etc" part, he was out of pocket for most of it because he was pushing to make the words enunciated enough to be understandable. when the music itself works so well when it's perfectly on beat, anything off just sounds a little off-putting.
Some of you only watched the movie huh
Lol this is too good
The final note being so long (and offkey) was...interesting
It’s meant to be funny
Are her gestures (Roxy) choreographed? They're almost the same as the ones Melissa Rae Mahon did on Broadway.
Well, dang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Barrett is so handsome!
The dancing and the acting and just it all is naturally amazing. Its a musical....... they are always amazing, even the shit ones are amazing
Having performed twice as Billy Flynn in the UK, I am surprised at some of the lack of theatrical knowledge by some people. Presume they are swayed by film and television.
My favorite version is with Daniel Boaventura and Adriana Garambone😍
Maria león Beautiful ❤
Best version of this song cos that ventriloquism was on the money. Mama did say notice how his mouth never moves, almost, and that's exactly what we got. U could hardly see his lips move during "Roxie's" lines
Wow
it's all defensible...
* clockering sounds of chickens mating *

!!!
Hahaha. Cool
WOW, this is SLOW. It should be almost too fast and OOT vaudeville, that's the point.
Moira Russell When you actually have a ventriloquist you use that to your advantage so it’s slower
@@vanessaajohn but the point is that he isn't actually supposed to be a good ventriloquist
Gatekeep much?
This is not really faithful to the original... also Billy's part at the end on: "the" was so all over the map and was not even held that long I am confused about this video. If you can explain what happened I would be interested.
wow really love how this scene was executed in the movies imo better than the original version
Probably because they weren't dressed like 50 Shades of gray the musical
1:14 I think the guy on the left is checking her out
Lol, id bet the guy is gay
He is mic’d with a capitol M!
2:55 tf is he doing LMAO
LOL
WHEN HE STARTED BARKING AT HER I--
What is this genre called?
Im trying to study for my part as Mary Sunshine.... Guys im worried lmao
I bet you did great!
ㅔprrfect
All the comments about the ventriloquism, but his voice is overly cartoony for no real reason. He could get across that he’s doing her voice without the silly voice. And her facial expressions come off very stern. I have seen the stage show, as well as the movie, and this is just not the “greatest” version like some people are claiming.
Completely agree. I don’t like this version at all.
Men i was tired and only watch it
How come Billy looks like Onision?
why you should shave before a show (you're on Broadway for heaven's sake) met Brett Barrett once MANY MNAY years ago during the tour of Grand Hotel really nice guy.
Pitchy 🥴
Yikes! 🎵🎵🎵
He sounds like Walter (aka lola’s dad) in the looney tunes show.
Robbie Hagberg I think you should be there at 10 minutes or so if you want to do it tomorrow or not yet but I don't think I will be able to get it tomorrow so I can go to the store if you want to do it tomorrow or not yet but if you want to 1920and 1958
Why do the reporters seem like they work a second job at the whoopie spot and had no time to change.
does this dude seriously have his bottom button buttoned?
his voice cracked....
Do you know the difference between you and Mr. Barrett? Mr. Barrett is a superstar and on stages all over the world while you aren 't. So I think if his voice cracks now and then it s ok!
Means wasn't lip synced
gurl the uncontrollable vibrate on billy though he eats but like way to much mamas
이거지
The movie version is so much better
1:14 did mans just check her cake out?
I love all the pretty girls in black pantyhose.
Richard still is better lol
She's more worry for her hair than her performace.
2:01
The second to last note lol
Myeshia he was out of breath 😰
This is the number you’ll hear after Biden is shunted out at the convention… in stead of “the both reached for the gun” it’ll be “it’s the man not the party”. Lol, mark my words
Guy sings amazing but girl is hot as f%#k
Worst miss sunshine ever!
