A lot of people criticized Schindler's List, but you have to consider that this film is how people in the future are probably going to remember the Holocaust. When people ask, "Did this really happen?" they'll have this film to watch, one that pulls no punches in describing historical fact. I've never ever read or heard anyone in 33 years say Last Crusade was too much like Raiders. But I also rate it over Raiders. Both would be in my top 5 on this list though too, up there with Jaws and Jurassic Park.
Hollywood studios will often release two or more movies with similar plots or themes at around the same time (example: Armageddon/Deep Impact, Saving Private Ryan/The Thin Red Line). I think the reason Empire of the Sun is so overlooked is due to it being released around the same time as The Last Emperor - a similar themed movie that received more love from the critics.

Jaws #1 is a no brainer to me, although I get why some would out Schindler higher. How many good historical dramas are there? How many great shark movies that are also considerably deeper than most summer blockbusters. Which this is considered the first of
Overall, I take my hat off to this ranking. It’s not an easy thing to rank a filmography such as Spielberg’s, but you did a great job. The only strong objection I had was the placement of “The Color Purple,” which you placed No. 11th. I would’ve swapped it out with “Indiana Jones Last Crusade”just because it represented, as you correctly pointed out, was Spielberg‘s first attempt at pure dramatic story telling. I can remember seeing it with my mother and walking out at the end with both of us in tears. It was such a tremendously great film. It’s also easily ranks as one of the worst examples of the Academy Awards getting it so profoundly wrong, with an amazing 11 Oscar nominations and 11 snubs - bloody outrageous!!
Those bikes taking off in E.T. would have been laughed at without John Williams best moment ever. Notice how Spielberg's best movies are also Williams finest too?
Q: Do you remember the first time you saw that Brachiosaurus come into view to John William's incredible score? A: Yes, yes I do. I was 7 years old, watching it in theaters, and while later parts of the movie had me crawling into Dad's lap and hiding against his chest, that part took my breath away and made me want to cry from how beautiful it was.
My ranking will be:-(Not counting Twilight Zone) 33. 1941 32. Amblin 31. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal skull 30. Always 29. The Terminal 28. The Sugarland Express 27. The BFG 26. Didn't think Crystal Skull was that bad, it was much more Lucas's film but for that (and its other/related challenges, being a sequel nearly 20 years later, pretty much having to have a lot of CGI, taking Indiana Jones to the '50s) still pretty impressive and fun.
seeing the title of this video, i didn't think that e.t. would be chosen as his best film....it's my favourite movie of all time...i still view it pleasurably and i'm 50 years old!!!very good ranking....i'm subscribed!!!
Just saw 1941 for the first time and I think it's really underrated, the extended version is great and I love the sheer scope and audacity of it. The cast is legendary, the gags go for broke and come a mile a minute, and the visuals are absolutely incredible. Those shots of the tank driving through the paint factory and the house falling off a cliff...I've never seen anything like it.
everytime I see this "ranking" stuff or a commentary about spilberg's work, I know that 1941 would always be used as the "cautionary tale" and yet... I love that movie. I watched it when I was a kid and laughed from the very first scene (we were a bit confused my mother had rented the wrong movie), to stupid jokes as "it's going it''s going it's going" or "give me a break" or "he is to tall to be a jap" and I could go on and on. The fight, them throwing sailers and army men to each side always will crack me up, and the despair of the mother grabbing that jar while the house fall off the cliff... It is a masterpiece, and no one will ever change my mind.
Those effects were great because they cost the equivalent of a small nation's GDP -- if memory serves, 1941 was the most expensive comedy ever made in its day and held that title for many years afterward.
It was the first of his films that kick started his career off and it was the first ever film to be called a blockbuster and it should be the first on the list not number 3. I can never get bored with this film ever ... JAWS his masterpiece!!
I was working in Media Relations at Columbia Pictures in the 1980s and in 1982-83 we took every prize for our triple fantastic films of Tootsie, Gandhi and Das Boot (pronounced Boat BTW). Many of us were invited to a birthday party for the son of top executive of Universal (who shall be nameless). The son had been working in our department for experience. Later in the evening, I walked into the kitchen where said top Universal executive took me (a mere publicist BTW) and began haranguing me about the fact that Gandhi had taking all the Academy awards and ET got nothing. I'm sure he was taking his frustration out on me since he couldn't yell at the head of Columbia Pictures (Frank Price). It was unnerving and very surreal. And, may I say that I believe Gandhi deserved all the accolades it got and I was proud to work with Richard Attenborough who was a truly great and exceptional man. Oh, and in the early 1960s, Steven Spielberg was my brother's roommate at Long Beach State Univ before Spielberg switched to USC. Back then, he always looked like a film was running in his mind and that he found the life around him to be secondary. I never would have predicted his great and deserved rise to fame.
It says a lot about how good he is that TheTerminal can be near the bottom of someone's list and near the top of someone else's. Over 30 movies and ALL of them are someone's favourite
Good list.. my top 5: 1. Jaws 2. Raiders of the lost ark 3. Close encounters of the third kind 4. Jurassic park 5. Minority report And he definitely helped out with Polrergeist, which would be #6 if it was made official. Duel rules too. And The Post. And Dicaprio. Too many good movies... 🤯
The new 2021 Steven Spielberg Directed Movie version of West Side Story is BRILLIANT and yes, Ben Cook is TERRIFIC in it, (as is everyone else)! How AWESOMELY COOL that he's your Cousin, Matthew!! He's VERY talented and seems like a great guy, too!!
I am a bit confused why Goonies was left out, he did the story, he owns the film and sean astin said he co produced it, I'd put it in the top 5 for sure!
Great list! Not an easy task. Spielberg is my absolute favorite director! Here’s my ranking: 1. Schindler’s List 2. Jaws 3. Saving Private Ryan 4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 5. Lincoln 6. Jurassic Park 7. The Color Purple 8. Raiders of the Lost Ark 9. Catch Me if You Can 10. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 11. The Fabelmans 12. Ready Player One 13. Minority Report 14. Bridge of Spies 15. Even his “worst” movies are still watchable. Compared to bad movies by other directors, Spielberg’s “bad” movies are still watchable. I will happily re-watch The Terminal.
I was 8 when I saw ET. I loved it, it was the best movie ever. Now I am 48, and know quite a lot more about making movies and the language of cinema. I love it and it is the best movie ever. Great list, and a deserved #1.
When you have produced a film that nobody gets tired of and ends up knowing every piece of dialogue in it you know you've produced your best Couldn't agree more!
10. Catch Me If You Can (good but a little too fun for it's own good) 9. Bridge of Spies (good cold war drama, perhaps a little too preachy) 8. Lincoln (great historic piece, very engaging) 7. Jurassic Park (it's got dinosaurs. Need I say more) 6. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (probably his most larger than life sci fi film) 5. Raiders of the Lost Ark (best of the Indy movies, by far best action adventure film ever) 4. Saving Private Ryan (by far the best and most realistic war film ever made) 3. E.T. (untouchable classic) 2. Jaws (first and greatest blockbuster ever) 1. Schindler's List (Spielberg comes of age and teaches a powerful history lesson)
@@filmranker6092 It all depends, at least, I think so. If you have read the book and then you heard SS was making a movie out of it, you had to have great expectations. Happened to me and boy, was I not dissapointed.
Jaws should be #1. It has had the greatest effect, saving many lives by scaring the heck out of swimmers and making them stay in shallower waters, thereby preventing deaths by drowning.
Whereas I might move specific movies up or down in the list, I fully appreciate hearing someone's thoughts on the ranking of perhaps the most beloved director of our time. I for one can't pick my favorite child...
The Post & Amistad got done a little dirty on this list. That said, an oeuvre as deep as his means that it’s gonna feel like some films got done dirty.
Great list I sould say my top 5 would be #5 Saving Private Ryan #4 Indiana Jones and the last crusade #3 Close Encounters of the Third kinf #2 Schindlers List #1 Jaws
10 BEST Spielberg: 1. Jaws 2. Schindlers List 3. Close Encounters 4. Raiders 5. Jurassic Park 6. Ready Player One 7. Saving Private Ryan 8. Catch Me If You Can 9. Lincoln 10. E.T. (been so many years, have to rewatch before I can give it it's rightful place) 3 FAVORITES 1. Ready Player One 2. Jurassic Park 3. Raiders
@@filmranker6092 have the book, just haven't dove into it yet. That movie blew my mind, I enjoyed watching it so much. If you really love movies, you cannot dislike this movie.
Excellent review. Glad you included Duel, such a thrilling movie with little dialogue. Have to disagree where you placed The Terminal. Thought it was a great commentary on the challenges immigrants must overcome after being displaced. Done through the tale of one man.
I have 6 children, and I rented Schindler's List when most of them were little. I was watching it by myself, enjoying it, until the scene when the young child was executed by being shot in the head. It's the only movie I ever had to stop watching due to my emotions getting the best of me. I wept like a little boy after seeing that, and probably will again if I ever try to rewatch that movie.

Raiders of the Lost Ark 9.) Minority Report 10.) Close Encounters of the Third Kind 11.) Temple of Doom 12.) Ready Player One
I'm not really a Spielberg fan and I have not seen many of his movies, but here is my ranking of what I have seen: 1: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (10/10) 2: Raiders of the Lost Ark (9/10) 3: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (8/10) 4: E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (7/10) 5: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (7/10) 6: Jaws (6/10) 7: Ready Player One (6/10) 8: Catch Me If You Can (6/10) 9: The BFG (5/10) 10: Jurassic Park (5/10)
I'd put Raiders up top at #1. Even though it's a "genre" piece, Spielberg elevates it to genius with his pure visual imagination, kinetic movement and the expert pace of Lawrence Kasdan's script.
For the most part I agree. In ET, you forgot to mention Williams' score totally adds to the overall vision -- it's brilliant. Also, Always is perhaps his most under-rated movies, and while you mentioned this being Audrey Hepburn's final movie role, she plays "An Angel" which makes this even more heart-breaking.
Williams was incredibly worried about his score being edited for time. Spielberg said he would create film AROUND/UPON Williams’ music, which is why the last 10 minutes is practically entirely Williams’ score. You don’t get a more perfect collaboration of cinema-making EVER. The initial screening drew a 9-minute standing ovation from the audience!!!
My top films (I haven't seen Schindlers list) 6. Close encounters of the third kind 5. E.T 4. Saving private Ryan 3. Jaws 2. Jurassic park 1. Raiders of the lost ark Also, I think Tin Tin is a bit underrated.
I’ve always thought Spielberg was a mixed bag as a director. Some were great like Jaws and Jurassic Park, but there are some real stinkers that he made as well. Definitely a hit or a miss for me.
Poor Karen Allen deserves a proper mention for "Raiders..." -- I think you might have had Kate Capshaw on your mind when you should have said, "Karen Allen" (at, roughly, 19:30)
I’m surprised so many rank Jurassic Park over Saving Private Ryan. CGI dinosaurs over what’s probably the greatest war movie of all time? To each their own.
You did a great job rating the greatest director of our time. You were not too critical about any of the films and I agree with you on most of the films.
Good list. But I think Saving Private Ryan should've been higher--I mean it's ONE OF THE MOST LIFE-CHANGING MOVIES you'll ever see. I don't think any movie has ever stayed with me longer--he really brought the impersonal brutality of war home. But then again, Spielberg may be the best director ever, so I know you had lots of great movies to choose from. I also feel Duel should be higher. That movie is half a century old, and LOSES NOTHING when viewed now. It really was ahead of its time, and showed a lot of the phenomenal techniques Spielberg would use later on so effectively...

I am a Japanese guy. I wached EMPIRE OF THE SUN in my early teen. I found then that Spielberg could create such a movie as well as Indiana Jones or E.T. I love the film.
When it comes with Spielberg films (or Kubrick) the ranking it's a very subjective thing and it changes constantly, same as our moods. My favourite of his is definitely CEOTTK followed by...I really can't say right now.
Perhaps someday do a retrospective on Steven Spielberg’s early episodic television work and TV movies. My favorite being the one hour and 16 minute episode of Columbo titled Murder By The Book.

I love steven Spielberg he's one of my favorite directors of all time and it was so hard to pick 10 of my favorite movies that he made.

7. E.T the extra terrestrial
6. Schindler's list

4. Saving private Ryan

1. Jaws
That is a fair list. Even though I have Hook a lot lower, I have such a big place in my heart for it.
Jaws #1 is a no brainer to me, although I get why some would out Schindler higher. How many good historical dramas are there? How many great shark movies that are also considerably deeper than most summer blockbusters. Which this is considered the first of
Hook before Schindlers list? LOL
schindler was somewhat boring (i haven't seen hook btw)@@Reeplay7
Schindler's List is his masterpiece, and the Oscars(7) prove it.
Oscars prove very little.
It’s also easily ranks as one of the worst examples of the Academy Awards getting it so profoundly wrong, with an amazing 11 Oscar nominations and 11 snubs - bloody outrageous!!
where is poltergeist
Those bikes taking off in E.T. would have been laughed at without John Williams best moment ever. Notice how Spielberg's best movies are also Williams finest too?
Q: Do you remember the first time you saw that Brachiosaurus come into view to John William's incredible score?
A: Yes, yes I do. I was 7 years old, watching it in theaters, and while later parts of the movie had me crawling into Dad's lap and hiding against his chest, that part took my breath away and made me want to cry from how beautiful it was.
My ranking will be:-(Not counting Twilight Zone)

No West Side Story 2021?!
It was BRILLIANT and I DEFINITELY place it up there in the Top 3, if not NUMBER 1!
Unless you haven't seen it yet?!
@@filmranker6092 He is like George Lucas both a national treasure.
Based on your rankings, you should change your YT handle from Indiana Jones to Alan Grant 😂
Didn't think Crystal Skull was that bad, it was much more Lucas's film but for that (and its other/related challenges, being a sequel nearly 20 years later, pretty much having to have a lot of CGI, taking Indiana Jones to the '50s) still pretty impressive and fun.
I noticed that Tom Hanks has been in quite a few of Steven Spielberg films
"A.I." is a top 5 masterpiece from him. People who think that ending was bad, I find, mostly didn't get the point of the film.
seeing the title of this video, i didn't think that e.t. would be chosen as his best film....it's my favourite movie of all time...i still view it pleasurably and i'm 50 years old!!!very good ranking....i'm subscribed!!!
Well done! Your reviews were concise and excellent!
Always loved the fact the real life age difference between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is 3 years. Hi dad!
Color purple and Schindlers list. Two of the greatest movies in history.
your writing is outstanding, i subscribed of course -- can't figure out why so few have (so far!)
@@noemiapereira6670 "YOU...have a serious wardrobe problem, kid."
Yeah I was a bit upset to see it so low on here, that movie is fantastic and just so hilarious
Those effects were great because they cost the equivalent of a small nation's GDP -- if memory serves, 1941 was the most expensive comedy ever made in its day and held that title for many years afterward.
I watch 1941 when I was kid. Last year I saw it again. It's really Spielberg bad movies. Not funny. Btw, I watch again because i like Nancy Allen.
It was the first of his films that kick started his career off and it was the first ever film to be called a blockbuster and it should be the first on the list not number 3.
I can never get bored with this film ever ...
JAWS his masterpiece!!
I commend you sir on your list, it’s great to hear other people’s opinions regardless of whether you agree or not.
Great video! Very good choice of rankings. I probably would have placed Saving Private Ryan a bit higher though!
That top 10 was a really tough call. He had too many phenomenal films.
Also thanks!
Minority report is my favourite. Incredible work to summarize 34 movies in 22 minutes!
My favorite movie for years has been A.I. and I love the terminal, didn’t even know he directed it until now
It says a lot about how good he is that TheTerminal can be near the bottom of someone's list and near the top of someone else's.
Over 30 movies and ALL of them are someone's favourite
Good list.. my top 5:
1. Jaws
2. Raiders of the lost ark
3. Close encounters of the third kind
4. Jurassic park
5. Minority report
And he definitely helped out with Polrergeist, which would be #6 if it was made official. Duel rules too. And The Post. And Dicaprio. Too many good movies... 🤯
Um, no. Just no.
Spielberg has made SO many GREAT movies and only a few that weren't so great.
Guess what, Steven Spielberg is directing a new movie called West Side Story (which is a remake), my cousin Ben Cook is in it as Mouthpiece
The Goonies was directed by Richard Donner, it was not a Spielberg movie.
Great list! Not an easy task. Spielberg is my absolute favorite director! Here’s my ranking:

Empire of the Sun is my favourite. Such a powerful, wonderous film.
5. Indiana Jones and the last crusade 10/10
4. Jaws 10/10
3. Saving Private Ryan 10/10
2. Jurassic Park 11/10
1. Schindler’s list 15/10. The most depressing yet beautiful film I’ve ever seen
1941 was way better than the ranking. Very unique comedy and is watchable many times.
Far as I’m concerned there are NO “worst” when it comes to Spielberg
Ranking Ready Player One that highly (ahead of Amistad?!) is wild...
Spielberg makes the most rewatchable movies....War of the worlds included.
yea, he underrated War of the Worlds quite a bit. It was extraordinarily realistic and scary.
5: Saving Private Ryan
4: Schindler’s List
3: E.T: The Extra Terrestrial
2: Jaws
1: “Indiana Jones Trilogy”
Even his “worst” movies are still watchable. Compared to bad movies by other directors, Spielberg’s “bad” movies are still watchable. I will happily re-watch The Terminal.
I was 8 when I saw ET. I loved it, it was the best movie ever. Now I am 48, and know quite a lot more about making movies and the language of cinema. I love it and it is the best movie ever. Great list, and a deserved #1.
Good video. But his best was Jaws. Seen it many times. Never tire of it. And the first big summer blockbuster that changed the whole movie biz.
When you have produced a film that nobody gets tired of and ends up knowing every piece of dialogue in it you know you've produced your best
Couldn't agree more!
10. Catch Me If You Can (good but a little too fun for it's own good)
9. Bridge of Spies (good cold war drama, perhaps a little too preachy)
8. Lincoln (great historic piece, very engaging)
7. Jurassic Park (it's got dinosaurs. Need I say more)
6. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (probably his most larger than life sci fi film)
5. Raiders of the Lost Ark (best of the Indy movies, by far best action adventure film ever)
4. Saving Private Ryan (by far the best and most realistic war film ever made)
3. E.T. (untouchable classic)
2. Jaws (first and greatest blockbuster ever)
1. Schindler's List (Spielberg comes of age and teaches a powerful history lesson)
“Best and most realistic war movie” has got to be a damn joke
My favorites are Catch Me If You Can (thought it really walked the line between fun and drama) and Schindler's List.
I just started watching Bridge of Spies for the first time and was happy to see it was co-written by the Coen Brothers. Wow.
It is a really terrific surprise of a film.
Great list
I sould say my top 5 would be
#5 Saving Private Ryan
#4 Indiana Jones and the last crusade
#3 Close Encounters of the Third kinf
#2 Schindlers List
#1 Jaws
Solid top 5!

1. Jaws
2. Schindlers List
3. Close Encounters
4. Raiders
5. Jurassic Park
6. Ready Player One
7. Saving Private Ryan
8. Catch Me If You Can
9. Lincoln
10. E.T. (been so many years, have to rewatch before I can give it it's rightful place)
1. Ready Player One
2. Jurassic Park
3. Raiders
Ready Player One doesn't get the love it deserves. It's such a great example of capturing the spirit of the book without going frame for frame.
Schindler's List is easily the greatest one watch movie in history. I am not sure I have watched it a second time.
I try to watch my Essential list every year. Schindler's list in on that list.
War horse is so underrated, it's amazingly emotional and I loved the story
"some of the formative films of our childhood." Indeed.

"Jaws" is the best movie ever.👍
I cannot believe poltergeist was not mentioned that and jaws are among my favorite movies of all time
I bet the people who made bigger boats when this movie came out, are eternally grateful to Spielberg.
Please rewatch Sugarland Express. It's funny, serious, well acted, and the music of John Williams (orchestral music with harmonica) is beautiful.

As someone who grew up reading the books I thought it was absolutely dreadful and the reason why Herge never let it happen in his life time

Jaws a 6/10?? Jurassic Park a 5/10??? Are you mentally challenged or something?
Man, I would have done some serious rearranging of this list but that’s okay. Good on ya’ for presenting your comprehensive list.
I'd put Raiders up top at #1. Even though it's a "genre" piece, Spielberg elevates it to genius with his pure visual imagination, kinetic movement and the expert pace of Lawrence Kasdan's script.
Except one problem is it’s boring as hell
Also I’ve never heard someone say “kinetic movement” lol little bit redundant. What does that even mean?
@@coolkid7151 Raiders of the lost ark boring? Cheer up, it's fucking epic.
John Williams is the secret weapon behind pretty much every great Spielberg film.

Also, I think Tin Tin is a bit underrated.
I hear you on TinTin. I missed it in theatres, and I kind of forget about it, but it is a fun adventure movie that probably shines on the big screen.
It's a pretty good rundown. Catch Me If You Can is the one that sticks for me, to this day. Great character study.
Schindler's List was Spielberg's best film ---period .
I’m surprised so many rank Jurassic Park over Saving Private Ryan. CGI dinosaurs over what’s probably the greatest war movie of all time? To each their own.
You did a great job rating the greatest director of our time. You were not too critical about any of the films and I agree with you on most of the films.
"childhood in a bottle"... perfect.
Where would The Fabelmans and West Side Story rank on this list now that it has grown by two more theatrical films in the last three years?

Perhaps someday do a retrospective on Steven Spielberg’s early episodic television work and TV movies. My favorite being the one hour and 16 minute episode of Columbo titled Murder By The Book.
