I was a nyc firefighter and worked up the block at engine co 308,and back in the 90s there was a fire at don peps, anyway we were able to put the fire out and save the pigeons up on the roof, they were in cages, and prized possesions of the owner.he was so grateful that a couple of days later he offered us some nice homemade wine,of course we couldnt accept it (wink wink) as we are paid proffesionals, there are pictures to this day of the fire at the quarters of eng co 308...alot of great memories of the neighborhood.

I love stuffed clams, but you'd have to drag me into the city to get them. I've lived in a few big cities throughout my career, and I just never took to the noise and commotion. When we were younger, my bestie and I used to go down to the Bowery so she could buy jewelry and then we'd go to Little Italy for dinner. There was a cigar bar/restaurant on the corner of Mulberry that we loved. Old guys in suits standing outside smoking cigars. They always sat us way out of the way, and looking back, I imagine two Irish looking girls from Pennsylvania weren't their key market, lol. Anyway, I don't remember the name of it, but it was across from this amazing bakery where we'd get dessert. I moved away, and when we went back a few years later, the cigar bar was gone. That really made us sad because it was just more proof of the dwindling space of Little Italy. It was really cool to see you on location. I don't know why, but I thought maybe you couldn't go into New York anymore. I love your videos, John. They always teach me something new. Thank you.

I wanted to get a sandwich and went in Joe Butch’s ice cream place to see maybe they had something as I was right there. Joe Butch spoke with me and told me no go to this other restaurant and he stepped out showed me us where to go. We walked down that way but then saw Umbertos and decided to eat there. After we went back to Joe Butch’s for some ice cream. Joe Butch was aggravated we didn’t go where he told us to go. I made up some bullshit excuse and ended that was that, we had our ice cream and all was good. I thought Jesus this man is in tune with neighborhood These mob guys sure love the food business.

thank you for responding john. I've been very curious about that. Why didn't Italian Americans speak it like switch between languages mid conversation? I believe all Italian Americans( the ethnicity of cosa nostra families and members)should know both English and Italian. Al Pacino and robert de Niro couldn't speak Italian and had to practice their Italian dialogue for the Godfather in the 70s!! When I think the Italian culture would've been at its peak. I work with young to middle aged Latinos at target and they know both Spanish and English fluently and switch between the two like nothing. I only know English and they speak to me in only English but with others they speak English and they speak Spanish to others who only know Spanish. I think that's cool to know both languages. I wonder why the Italians didn't pass it on.

Their linguine with clams are delicious.Haven’t been since my confirmation dinner with my brother ordering a $120 steak platter but I need to go back when I’m back in the neighborhood. Also I’m glad you didn’t go in there looking like that John(no offense lol).
