  • Aston Martin have received bad news regarding their future in the sport, and it seems like the team has lost one of its most vital sponsors for the upcoming season, Cognizant. Although the collaboration will continue, Cognizant have made a move that is definitely going towards the direction of what everybody else was speculating - Lawrence Stroll selling the team, and after the Canadian billionaire latest statement regarding this matter, one couldn’t help but wonder - are we seeing massive changes in the Silverstone-based squad? And if so - what does it essentially means for the Strolls, especially for Lance, who is holding on to his dear seat thanks to his father’s support?

I would guess that selling the team now makes sense from a business standpoint.
Considering it was bought as a team that wasn't making ends meet, I suppose there's profit on the table.
Heck, even Lance's shortcomings make the car and team's potential harder to read in contrast to Alonso's achievements.
Many people are left wondering where Aston would end up if it had a good second driver.
It's easy to think "daddy stroll bought his son an F1 team so he could drive", but I can't imagine Lawrence doing it without expecting to make at least some profit, one way or another.

Alonso is the single biggest factor in AMS success this year. Just look at his performance against Lance Stroll.
Vettel would have only done marginally better than Stroll just like he did the previous year.
The selling of the team is a good thing for Aston Martin. It now has much if not all of its debts paid and is freshly capitalised to grow in the near future. Add to that the new wind tunnel scheduled for completion by the end of next year and you will see the team go from strength to strength. The idea of buying a F1 racing team just to "keep de young 'un "happy" always sounded a bit of a stretch, to say the least, and it really is. When Lawrence went on to buy a huge chunk of Aston Martin (the car maker that is) with his con buddies, err, "consortium", it became obvious that he's in it for more than just junior's "racing glory", now he's juggling billions not of his own and those investors have little time for such follies.
Lance may be headed to the WEC, riding the Valkyrie off to Valhalla (love their new car names, one would think Lawrence has landed at Gaydon on a Viking longship ;) or assume a "senior position" in the team (how about youngest team principal in F1 history? Christian wouldn't like that record taken away from him one bit ;) but Lawrence investing big time in the all new facilities, wind tunnel etc. and securing a deal for AMR to become the "Honda factory team" don't look like the hallmarks of a man who is ready to call it quits just yet.
I wouldn't read too much in Cognizant stepping down as "name sponsor", F1 is a "money printing machine" these days, sponsors are literally cueing up today. And if Aramco was initially prepared to pay 800 million for Aston Martin/Racing Point back when, they'd pretty much have to double their offer by now... I mean, Red Bull was asking a whopping 900 million for the "sh*t show" that is AlphaTauri from Rodin/Carlin when they came calling. (Dorilton Cap snatching up Williams for the paltry sum of $200m seems like a deal right out of the bargain basement today, boy, are they sitting pretty now. ;)

As cringe as it may sound, this is a good opportunity for some Indian companies to join Formula 1. Mahindra's well established in Formula E. Maybe they'll try sponsoring AMR. But then again, Tata's also got an amazing chance to bag this. Thoghts?

    • @gpculture

Companies that are not yet involved in F1 are desperate for buyout opportunities, so you are right - Mahindra and many others will definitely watch this from a close matter.

Andretti's probably gonna wanna call a team yk, Andretti F1 Team. So yea they can maybe look up this opportunity but theyve got the main stage in formula E and indycar so maybe that isnt as likely

This isn't going to help the situation but I think Lance shouldn't be in the F1 at all and his dad isn't helping him by pretending that his son is a top driver in F1. Sponsors don't like to see drivers picked due to a relationship with anyone. They want the best drivers on the grid. Lance go play some place else......

Lance Stroll is hands down THE WORST driver on the grid at present - (Logan Sargent gets a reprieve but only because he is a rookie). Fire him and get Drogovich or Mick Schumacher in. In '24, get Yuki in to prepare for the arrival of Honda in '26. For the love of F1, please just get rid of Lance Stroller.
