BEST RAMEN IN MELBOURNE - HAKATA GENSUKE | Melbourne Food Guide | Australia

- Hi guys, welcome back to our channel!
In this video, we are reviewing one of the most popular and still one of the hottest restaurants in Melbourne, Australia, a Japanese Ramen Shop called Hakata Gensuke. This ramen shop was first opened back in 2014 in the heart of Melbourne City on Russell Street and we believe it was the first ramen shop that made Melbournians took their ramen game more seriously.
Hakata Gensuke has several branches across Melbourne: their first store is the Russell Street branch, Queen Victoria (QV) store, Hawthorn Store, one in Westfield mall, the Carlton area, and they also now have a store in Western Australia. Each store has a different menu and only the QV branch serves chicken-based ramen which allows people like myself (Ony) who don't eat pork to still enjoy their tasty ramen - the rest of the shops however is serving pork-based broth noodle soup. The Russell Street store is still super popular and you'll often find a line outside the shop.
With the opening of newer shops, it kinda helps to relive some long queues. We live around the Hawthorn area not too far away from this Glenferrie shop. This shop here is still very busy, but it is very rare to see a queue.
The one thing we probably don't enjoy dining here at Hakata Gensuke is the price. It starts at $15 and every additional topping ranges from $2.50-$5. By the time you add some extra meat, seaweeds, and an egg you'll easily pay above $20 for a bowl of ramen which is very very expensive.
Was it worth the wait and the price? The unfortunate answer is yes - so be ready to line up to taste the best ramen in Melbourne ;)

Correction:
We typed `tonkatsu` (pork-based ramen) and also probably mentioning tonkatsu several times, this is not correct...because tonkatsu is the deep-fried pork cutlet. It supposed to be `tonkotsu`. Thanks Ralph for pointing out!!!

Let us know the best ramen from your city/country down below!
YAY a ramen episode!!!
Yayyy, it's long overdue, glad that we finally did it because the ramen is totally worth it ☺️
Yess the firm thin noodles!! The best!!!
Yup, firm and hard are our top pick for noodles too 👍
Hi new friends, wow everything looks amazing! Thanks for sharing! Stay connected!
Thanks so much for watching ❤️
Spring rolls are always a great option!
Yup it adds the crunchiness to the ramen dish 👍🏻
Oh you can even order like ichiran 😍
Yes it reminds us so much like Ichiran Ramen and the taste is also comparable. Peter can't pick between Hakata vs Ichiran, he said both are the same goodness! Except for price... everything else is draw haha :D
I need to book a trip to melbourne
Yassss! please come to Melbourne hahaha 😊
Wow chicken ramen! What a great alternative to pork!
Yes, always get excited to try ramen with non-pork based, interesting to see the ingredients to make the delicious broth 🤤
That karaage looks so nice and crispy
Oh my gosh, we underestimated it initally, but when we had our first bite, it is the best chicken karaage ever, super crispy on the outside and they use chicken skin too to wrap the chicken flesh, it makes the meat so juicy and tender 😍
Chicken Ramen that's sounds very good! A bit expensive but looks very tasty. Thanks guys for the sharing
The chicken ramen is certainly very tasty, so is the pork one. Yup it's on the expensive side but it's worth the visit when we really crave good ramen without need to fly to Japan :D
but $20 for a bowl of ramen.... yes... quite expensive. but i trust you when you say it's worth it - it looks so hearty !
Yup it’s expensive, we only go there occasionally when we really crave good ramen just like in Japan 🤤
It’s so worth it, lucky there is one branch so close to where we live and less queue than in the CBD 😁
One thing I like of ramen.. You can customize it... Toppings.. Salt level.. Sometime miso level... This restaurant brings customer service very high I think... I like the noodles.. I like season eggs. And char siu. Bean sprouts on mines hehe
Hahaha yes love the customisation of this restaurant too. It really represents a Japanese hospitality! We also want to order all the toppings available but unfortunately it can end up being too expensive for the ramen from this Hakata Gensuke restaurant, that's the only drawback we found haha
Hello my name Minh, I am from Vietnam.
Your Video is very interesting, I love it because I have very passionate and learn the dishes around the world
Hi Minh 👋
Thanks so much for watching our video 😊
Glad to hear you are so passionate about learning about different dishes from around the world, because so we are! Keep your passion alive 👍🏻
Oh that checklist is everything!! So cool!
Yes it is so cool because we all can have our own ramen preferences 👍🏻
No more over cooked noodle 😄
Very nice video. I enjoyed your food show.
Thanks so much for watching our video. Glad to hear you enjoyed it ❤️
ah! that card with all the preferences! it reminds us Japan so much!! miss some great ramen!!!
Yep it reminds us so much of Ichiran Ramen 🤤
Lucky we got this Hakata Gensuke here, though it’s a bit expensive but it’s quite similar to Ichiran 😄
The broth does look really nice and creamy!
Yup the broth is thick and we can taste it’s been cooked for a long time to pack a lot of flavours from the meat 👍🏻
Your videos are getting better everytime you upload. Also good to see some ramen places here in Australia. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks so much Chandy for the compliment 👍🏻
Will do :)
Thanks for your support too ❤️
Ooo I love those ordering sheets! Hahah I've only ever had them at Ichiran and Ramen Nagi!
Ahhh, never tried Ramen Nagi before. It must be good since you mentioned it 😊
Thx for the information. I will be there next visit to Melbourne. I live in Brisbane. C u again.
Thanks for watching our video ❤️
Hope you enjoy your visit to Melbourne 👍🏻 so many great food options here ☺️
Would really love to visit Brisbane anytime soon 😊
thanks for sharing! it's good to know there is good japanese restaurants in Mel!
No problem! Glad to share Melbourne great food options to all of you guys 😄
Awwhhhhh the signature tontatsu ramen looks soooo good!!! I really miss having a good bowl of ramen!! Yummssssss!! Good alternative to pork dishes, that Ebi spring roll sounds interesting! Lovely video guys, making me hungry watching this!
Thanks guys for watching ❤️
Hahaha yesss it is super delicious both of the pork and chicken ramen.
Ebi spring roll is also so good. Our favourite side dish is the chicken karaage, which we didn’t expect to be that good!
It’s tonkotsu not tonkasu! Haha sorry just noticed that. It’s interesting that the second location only specializes in chicken ramens. More reason to visit both places
ah...you're right! haha...somehow we remember that `pork` cutlet lol
Mmmm chicken ramen!
Great haircut! That’s how I had it for years
Love to see menus with pics
Thanks guys hahaa. Wow can’t picture how Maria with short hair 🤔
Yes, always appreciate restaurants providing menu with pictures 👍🏻
That black tori ramen looks very interesting
It's pricey but well price doesn't lie most of the time
Thanks for sharing this guys
We'll sure visit them when we go to Melbourne
Have a great day
Yes the black tori ramen is sooo good!
Try it next time you visit Melbourne ☺️
Thanks so much for watching ❤️
You too have a great day 👍🏻
omg! i really wanted to try this when i was in Melbourne !
the chicken karage look so good guys...
Ah you missed it! Next time then 😄
Is there any good ramen in Sydney too?
Chicken karaage is surprisingly sooo gooddd! Super crunchy on the outside, as they use chicken skin too 😍
Love how you can customize your ramen. We also prefer hard noodles. The broth looks so creamy indeed. Open that egg! That chicken karaage looks so good. So cool that they have a branch that only serves chicken ramen. And the black ramen is so interesting... Never had that. Tasty video!
Yesss we love how we can customise the ramen. Hahaha sorry we didn't show you guys when we opened the egg 😅
It's so cool right that they have one branch only serves chicken ramen 😍 The black ramen is using black sesame paste, it's clever, makes it so delicious 👍
Ramen is probably Lieles favorite word hahaha
Exciting to see this!
Hahahah lol 😂 it’s one of our favourite words too 🤤
Sometimes it is worth the splurge!
Yup sometimes you have to pay what it’s worth for 😊
That ramen place all looked very delicious, but ya, that seems a little expensive lol
It is delicious and worth the queue 🤤
Haha yeah it’s more on the expensive side but still worth it. We don’t go there often, only a few times occasionally when we really crave good quality ramen like in Japan 😃
O man hakata genuske looks friggin delicious 😍 queue for ramen is signs of an amazing spot. Tonkatsu is a fine choice. I like the ramen hard too. Reminds us of ichiran ❤
Hakata Gensuke is probably no.1 ramen still in Melbourne, since they opened, a lot of other good and specialised ramen shops started popping up too, however for us Hakata is still no.1 😄
Definitely try this when you guys visit Melbourne in the future 👍🏻
Yes reminds us of Ichiran so much 😊
Wooo the ramen explosion here 😆, do you like what type ramen texture? Soft medium?
We both personally like the harder and chewier texture of ramen, so glad that we can have our own preferences at Hakata Gensuke ramen 👍
Oooh some great ramen here.. I actually want to try the chicken ramen... very cool how you can order how you want it! 👍❤ That signature tori ramen.. looks very brothy and good!!!
Yes it’s a good bowl of ramen 👍🏻
Both chicken and pork too 🤤
It’s cool hey that we can customise how our ramen is cooked 😄
Ok, noted! added to the list on our next Melb trip (still dunno when though TT) haha...the broth is soo thick...yumm...:)
Yes the broth is thick and packed with meat flavours. So delicious! Next time in Melb, try it, you won’t be disappointed 👍🏻
I don't think I have ever had chicken broth ramen but I can imagine it tasting really good. I am not sure if I heard you guys right but only the QV location has chicken broth? I am craving ramen so much right now haha and some karage too. Great video!
Yes you heard it right 😁
Only QV branch serves chicken based ramen. The other branches serve tonkotsu (pork) based ramen 👍🏻
Go get some bowls of ramen for your craving 😁 is there any good ramen around where you live?
@@TwoHungryDiners we only got chains haha. Pretty solid but not amazing or anything like that.
Oh yummm. Have heard so much about Hakata Gensuke but still have not had a chance to try it yet. How does it compare to Ippudo?
Also Ony, sorry if you've already explained before, but you can't have pork?
Hakata Gensuke is delicious! You guys have to try when you visit Melbourne next time 😊
It’s been a while Peter hasn’t had Ippudo, he said can’t really remember how it tasted lol. We’ll try the one in Melbourne next, they just opened it last year here but we haven’t got a chance to try. We’ll let you guys know when we have.
I don’t like the pork taste in my mouth, it makes me feel nauseated 🤢 I don’t know why, as a foodie I am also disappointed that I can’t eat pork. Some pork dishes if they’re not too strong, I can eat it but most of them I can’t. Luckily Peter can eat almost every meat, so we still can review pork based dish haha 😆 thanks guys for asking 😄 - Ony
Like how you can request the salty level and texture of the noodle!
Yes! just like Ichiran ramen, love it 🥰
Hawthorn is the BEST location
Wow this is so delicious food bro. New follower here. Lets stay connected. Tq
How do they make it black ?
They put black sesame to the broth 😄
So delicious 👍🏻
Two Hungry Diners thought it was calamari tint
Fuel at $1.37? Jesus
It was one of the worst ramens I have tasted. It's not ramen it's soup!
