  • What's up with the audio on the V50X? I try to find out in this video. There's test audio with both the internal microphone and the Akaso external microphone that available for the V50X. I also try applying an audio normalization filter in post to see if that helps.
    Here are links for more info on the gear described in this video:

    i have the new packaging of the V50x and said it was already updated the firmware, the nature recording of mine was a bit better than in this video. But still the audio is poor compare to other action cam.

    I'm not getting sound at all recorded on my V50x. Tried every sound option and in FCP there is no sound appearing in the sound channel. I have the external mic on the way. Not a deal breaker but would be nice to have the ability to record some sound as I'm using it as a dashcam.

    I saw your video well.
    I found a problem with V50X. When saving a video using the Akasso V50X exclusive app (ex:Roadcam or AKASO GO), there was a problem with a strong mechanical sound coming out of the recorded audio. Do you know how to fix this problem?

    I think the mic is a lapel type and meant to be used close to your mouth. I found this helped but the audio level is still too low!

    Why didn't you clip the microphone on your shirt? THAT could have made a big difference, no?

    • @steevithak
      @steevithak  Před 4 lety +1

      It's a wired directional microphone, designed to be mounted on the video rig near the camera to pick up sound in the direction the camera is aimed. The cable isn't long enough to make it from the camera to the subject (the only exception might be if you have the camera mounted on your body which I didn't try). There are wireless microphones designed for that sort of use with DSLRs and phones but none that are compatible with the V50X. But also, you'll note that I did do one test with the microphone very close to my mouth, roughly the same distance as it would have been if clipped to my shirt, and it still didn't produce usable audio, so who knows. :)

    Yes it’s pretty low and crappy audio but at least you got some audio. I read dozens of reviews in this camera before I purchased one and no one mentioned the fact that the audio codec that Acácio used is not compatible with Macintosh computers. I would transfer the files to my Mac via an SD card and had absolutely no sound. I search for an answer for a day and finally found one small reply from Ocaso in Amazons reviews of the camera in which they state it lacks the proper Codec to play back audio on macs. I’m sure many of these people who have no sound from the camera have exactly that problem. It’s not a problem with the cameras hardware it’s a problem with the software and could be easily fixed for Akaso chose to pay for a real audio codec. There are two fixes however. Although who needs an extra step? You have to either connect your camera via Wi-Fi and save the files to your iPhone which converts the audio and then you can email or airdrop your video files to your Mac. Or you have to use the free third party app VLC and open that SD card transferred files and convert them to another mpeg Codec. Your audio isn’t great but at least it could be boosted and cleaned up. The hundreds of people who get no sound out of this camera probably haven’t figured out that Akaso is just neglecting Apple users and need the state somewhere in their literature that the files produced by this camera are not Mac compatible

    Mine v50x also have unusable audio, i bought their external mic and there is almost no improvement and only decision is to put it near your mouth so speech will become at least average. But it is good daylight camera with great stabilization for its price. Also there are some new updated cameras with new hardware and 2020-v.2.0 firmware, wonder if sound is good on them.

    The EK7000 has way better audio. I got the V50X for the option to change wide angle view, touch screen and stabilization. Mine has the same crappy audio. I was so disappointed. I like to record audio separate from the video anyway, but still. How is the audio way better on a $50 camera than a $100 camera?!?!

    Just bought a v50x. Bought it more for the picture, but would be nice to have good audio. If I got a separate style external mic, rather then the one it comes with, would the audio you think improve? Or is it because of the device?

    • @steevithak
      @steevithak  Před 4 lety +2

      You can hear the external mic tested in this video and judge for yourself it you think it's worth it. The external mic does improve the sound slightly but even with it, I found the sound be unacceptably bad. I think the problem is in the camera electronics, so we'll probably have to wait for Akaso to release an improved version of the V50X camera to get good audio.

  • @CarstenMeyer

      Thanks for the tip, I'll have a second look at my test clips and see if I can isolate the channels to compare

    • @steevithak
      @steevithak  Před 4 lety

      I can't tell any difference between left and right audio channels. And I tried setting it to external mic without the external mic plugged in - both channels have no audio. With the mic plugged in, both channels have what sounds to me like identical audio. The level is so low with either mic though, it's hard to tell for sure. I have to turn the volume up all the way to hear anything and it tends to be muffled and garbled sounding with either mic. Based on other comments, though, I think my particular V50X may be worse than average.

    Why are you using the external mic like a shotgun mic. It’s a lav mic and should be clipped to your shirt. Not a sensible test and do you have the correct settings?
    I have had the v50x for two day with the external mic and with the correct settings and firmware my audio is so much better than this. I am surprised how good mine sounds after seeing this and other vides. I hope you managed to improve it.

    • @steevithak
      @steevithak  Před 4 lety

      I haven't tried the GoPro White but from looking at the specs, I'd say go with Akaso V50X if you need good 4k video and don't care about audio quality. I'm betting the GoPro has much better audio than the Akaso. So if audio is important, the V50X probably isn't your best choice.
