The thing that most people don't realize about Zeppelin, and John Bonham, was that they were the first to bring the drums up as a major part of the mix. Other bands wouldn't hire Bonham because he hit the drums so hard, but Jimmy Page embraced it and used it to create the greatest rock band ever assembled. There have been many imitators, but never a band that could equal the sound and originality of the Mighty Zep.
Absolutely right
Jimmy is quoted as saying when he was a session player, the drums always sounded like they were in a can. He brought them forward so we could all enjoy. He is often overlooked for the great producer that he is.
You're astupid hardcore fan of Led Zep for sure😂You never saw or heard other bands, you loser....Of course Bonzo was a great drummer, but there were à lot of bands with incredible, legendary drummers long before Led Zeppelin, you idiot😂NO, Led Zeppelin, is not the first band who made the drummer shine😂CONNARD😡😡😡😡😡😡🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕ENOUGH WITH IDIOTS LIKE YOU, WHO ARE SAYING STUPID THINGS...😡🖕MITCH MITCHELL WITH JIMI HENDRIX, WAS A MONSTRUOUS DRUMMER, SINCE 1966, OR BUDDY MILES WITH HENDRIX IN 1969, KEITH MOON WITH THE WHO, SINCE 1964, THEY WERE MONSTRUOUS DRUMMERS WHO WERE SHINNING, IN THE BAND, LONG TIME BEFORE BONZO😡🖕SO PLEASE, STOP SAYING STUPID THINGS PLEASE
YOU'RE THE MOST STUPID LOSER ON EARTH😡👎💩🤮🖕DON'T TALK ABOUT LED ZEP, YOU STUPID CONNARD
Definitely imitators. Every single hair metal rock band of the 80's tried to copy Led Zep's style, but none of them ever reached the same level.
Dudes it really doesn't actually matter which Led Zeppelin tracks you pick..... This was a band that only did greatness!
The live version of this one from Knebworth 1979 is incredible!
Indeed. It’s freaking spectacular
I just turned 66 and man I have loved this band since I was 11 yo!
I was 10!
I was also twelve. My older brother gave me Led Zeppelin ll for my birthday!
Me too on both
I'm 68. Same story
Yep... I'm 63 and my older brother corrupted me when I was 9 in 1970!! Beatles ain't got shit on Zeppelin!!
John Bonham is like an octopus on the drums😂❤
The greatest rock drumming ever
My favorite cave man drummer. Harder? Hit it harder? OK.
@@geob3963 not just a hard hitter , Grooves for days
what a song...oh my dear god what a song!!! No matter how many times I hear this its like first time... what a masterpiece this is. Unreal.
Truth.
Drummer John Bonham is arguably considered one of the top two or three drummers in Rock history. Likewise Jimmy Page as lead guitar, and Robert Plant as lead singer. John Paul Jones (JPJ) is an unsung hero in the band. He is a musical genius in his own right, playing piano, keyboard, melatron, base guitar, and mandolin.
This actually comes from the album "Presence" and has a combination of influences. It basically tells the story of trips Jimmy and Robert took to Morocco and other places. There's a bit of William Blake's poetry when he mentions Albion. "Albion" used to be a poetic way to describe Britain. The "mighty arms of Atlas" refer both to the mythology of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, as well as the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This song is intense. I consider it the last of their "Epics" along with Stairway and Kashmir. Jimmy had 6 guitar tracks and managed to assemble and complete the entire song in one night. The album as a whole was completed in 18 days; the fastest they'd worked since their debut album. The staccato drumming sounds like a machine gun and John Paul Jones' galloping bass line imply swift, anxious movement. Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart readily admit they stole the bass line for their song Barracuda. Robert tells a story about a time he had a friend over to visit and while they chatted, he had music playing. At one point, he stepped out of the room and shortly thereafter, his guest came looking for him and told him they didn't want to be in the room alone anymore because the music playing was too intense. Intrigued, Robert came back to the room and the song playing was Achilles. There were a lot of changes going on during the making of Presence; new musical genres like punk were threatening to overthrow bands like Zeppelin's relevance, Robert was rethinking the band dynamics and his place in it as well as his life's path in general. He didn't want to be away from his family during the accident's aftermath and was angry at both Peter and Jimmy and felt they were unsympathetic. Presence is massively underrated; it's very stripped down and is full of intensity, anxiety, anger, pain, - a lot of difficult emotions.
Hey Henrie, (Ron here) good to catch up with you once again. Couldn’t agree more with your summation of events and Robert’s feelings during this period. Have heard Robert give more clarity to this period than others. (Of course that could simply be my radar not working more frequently at other times) I remember buying this the day it was available and having to play this one over and over for my younger brother. Still his favorite all these yrs later. While lacking in popularity by some, I really loved this project and felt they still knew they had more to give. Be well, and best wishes to you and yours.
@@ronaldelliott4373 hi Ron! Always fantastic to see you 🙂. For all the difficulties within the group at the time of recording, Presence has come to be held close to my heart for its raw vulnerability. I'll never not support it. Take care and see you around the Zep water cooler. 😉
@@henriettaskolnick4445 Indeed!
@@henriettaskolnick4445Mine as well henrie!
Drums and Bass are uber killing it on this track
Live at Knebworth 1979 of this song is mind blowing. Bonham is just unhinged. And Jimmy manages to cover multiple guitar layers. By that time, Jimmy was deep into addiction, but still had mastery over his instrument.
It's an absolute masterpiece
I bought this album in 1976 and every time I listen to this song the musicianship still amazes me !!
8 - Track Tape copy was the first copy I bought. It had a Pink colored plastic housing with a black paper label...
This song is amazing live at Knebworth (1979), I hope you guys decide to give it a watch, they always give more in their live performances. Thanks for another great reaction from both of you, & keep going with Led Zeppelin, many more great songs. A nonstop banging songs.
the most underrated song of led zeppelin
These two are incredibly beautiful people.
Thank youuuu 🤘❤️
They absolutely are. They would have fit in perfectly with those of us on this journey of discovery and attending massive amounts of Tours back in the day. Their enthusiasm is perfect and entertaining. 👈😎
They wind you up like spinning top and take you on a wild ride, but remember to unwind you before they go. Brilliant musicianship.
Another Masterpiece Courtesy of the Mighty Led Zeppelin!
❤❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥
Presence is just an awesome album and so often overlooked.
This song is MAMMOTH. 🏄♂️
Ironically Plant & his family’s car happened on vacation in Greece, his wife Maureen was driving. Pages daughter was with them, & Roberts son & daughter, thankfully the kids weren’t seriously injured. Maureen had a skull fracture & other injuries, & Robert his leg & other injuries. The band was on a deadline to get their album Presence done, & the whole album was recorded with Plant in a wheelchair. What was really sad, there was some issue with taxes, & they had to record the album in California. While both injured so badly, Robert wasn’t home with his family, like he wanted to be. Yes he was in a wheelchair for about a year, not knowing if he’d walk again. The song Tea For One off the same album, is a slow Blues song, about Robert missing his family & is great.
Exactly! This song is like a horse at full gallop. If I may say,you two are so cute together!
Top tier Led. Nobody's Fault But Mine from same album will definitely rock your world
Rock and Roll Live Video (Madison Square Garden 1973) Original Records. Led Zeppelin in concert.
I think this one is about touring. "Oh to laugh aloud, and dance a lot above the crowd". They came to town a year after Presence came out and played for 3 1/2 hours. We'd seen them before but that night we were only 20 feet away at eye level. The goats.
This song might be Jimmy Page's crowning achievement. The entire band at their peak, obviously.
Another great album. " Nobody's fault but mine" is another great song from this album
jimmy pulled an all nighter and laid down all 8 guitar tracks in 1 session!
This live 1979 at knebworth is FIRE!!! Kashmir at the 1979 knebworth concert was unbelievable too!!
Musical Genius ❤
No Zeppelin reaction is complete without listening to "Going to California", the LIVE VERSION, "Live at Earls Court 1975". Studio album version is great, but the live version is the one!! Cut and paste this ----> Led Zeppelin Going to California Live at Earls Court 1975
Yes yes
@@juliemanarin4127 agreed!
I have to agree, however the version from the “how the west was won”, from the forum in LA, 1972… is a very close second 🤔
Also, if you watch the Earl’s Court version stick around and enjoy “that’s the way” another definitive version…
@@JU5TINPDX Yeah, I have that DVD set. Absolutely incredible, and I love the whole acoustic segment. I think that would be a great idea if they react to that. I'm 100% onboard with your recommendation!
Yes definitely
The last truly epic song recorded by them. But one of their very best.
yup at the end they took it all the way back too the beggining, GENIUS!
This song always makes me think of galloping horses careening forward with soldiers swinging swords. Relentless. Great vocals by Robert and copious amounts of guitar overdubs by page. Almost impossible to reproduce live.
Cheers 🍺
Amazing guys, master piece of Led Zeppelin 🔥
War and art ... Perfect
Zep have the most diverse and surprising catalogue of songs you could ever find. There’s no “ typical” Zep style, except that almost all of it is awesome. I know this because I am 70 years old and I bought Led Zepoelin 1 in April 1969 with my birthday money. I was lucky enough to see them live in stage 4 times. They are still regarded as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. There are too many songs to suggest to you guys but maybe “ Dazed and Confused”, from their very first album ( recorded in autumn 1968 ). Great reaction and thank you both. Stay safe stay happy stay you. Best wishes from England 🏴.
Robert has said that he was in awe of the talent of the other three when they were doing this song, calling it magnificent. And it is. His vocals are not as strong but keep in mind he was singing from a wheelchair.
The story goes that he was so excited that he got through the song that he stood up in exaltation and promptly fell down. Everyone was horror struck, thinking he might if rebroken his ankle. Thankfully, he was Ok.
But that injury dies bother him at times to this day. .
I vividly remember the British music press slagging this album off , consequently I didn’t but it for a year , until I heard this track by accident in virgin records Bristol
Galloping bass line , ghost note. Amazing tone. lml
Led Zeppelin ❤❤❤
This is such an underrated Zeppelin song. Really the precursor to bands like Iron Maiden and the like. Massive tune.
The bass was providing that galloping sound.
Now you have realised about john Bonham on the drums its the moment to do Moby Dick - the live performance at Earls court 1975 which is essentially a drum solo and vehicle for displaying his techniques . Once you've seen that you will be able to better pick out what he does in other tracks you come onto - masterclass in drumming. Love your reactions to this its so great to see people who really get this and are so enthusiastic. Don't worry you are not going to run out of amazing music and you haven't heard anything until you've done dazed and confused. That is really one you need to do the studio then the live otherwise you will never understand what is going on .
John Bonham is an Absolute Beast on this!! One of their best songs!! IMO
Whole Lotta Love Live Madison Square Garden 1973
It Was An April Morning When They Told Us We Should Go...we had a similar reaction in '77...the Drumming was Overwhelming Coupled with the Guitar and Bass Took Us On A Galloping Mythological Trip Through Planty's Lyrics. ..Monumental Battle btwn Intrumental Aggression and Thoughtful Humanity. Metaphor For Our Times and All Times. ❤ Y'all's Reaction.
You got to do this live at Knebworth 1979 AMAZING watching Jimmy trying to recreate the army of guitars on the studio version from just one guitar. Drumming incredible. Poetry
"The Count of Tuscany" is an intriguing title and based on a true story from Dream Theater. also anything from classic YES is be supper cool
The galloping sound while supported by the drums, chunk chunka chunk sound, is the bassist John Paul Jones
When they made this song are in a life moment plain of troubel. John Bonhan in the drum made one of the best works of all time
Also the galloping bassline and guitar works so well with Bonham's drumming in thos song 👌🥁
thanks for doing a great reaction...and for accepting my request...i agree with many comments below that live version of this song is absolutely amazing...watching John Bonham play drums is just as incredible as the sound they made thru his incredible talent...the drums on "Dazed and Confused" are also as impressive...i look forward to that reaction as well!! take care and thanks again...
Carol, you out did yourself with this great interpretation of this song!!! Wonderful, can't wait until you react to "The Rain Song", studio & live!!! :)
good reaction. Truly epic drum song. Also an amazing guitar orchestra song. At points, there are like 5-6 guitar tracks all going on, great writing and arranging. One of Page's gifts.
So fun. This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Your reaction to this was entertaining to watch. Thanks for this
The entire Presence album is special. You'll enjoy it!
Best drummer period.
You're in luck! You still haven't played Zep's best song (in my humble, but very experienced rocker's opinion) - IN THE EVENING. I wish I could be you hearing it all over again for the first time. Best guitar solo, etc.... power goose bumps for everyone!!! Love your channel... ❤
The Zep song I really enjoy the most. It's prog. But it's Zep. Sublime, just love it. Ty both for reaction! Zepheads!
Ok. As a Zep head for many years, I must reccommend that you review "The Song Remains The Same" and the "Rain Song" from live 1973 Madison Square Garden. Those songs go from one right into the next, yet are totally different. The concert is from the movie 'THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME". Some of the videos you already reviewed are from this movie.
I would suggest the live version from Knebworth in 1979. The drums fills are amazing, and Robert’s vocals were very good. In the recording, Robert’s vocals seem to float along above the instruments, somewhat like they do in Kashmir.
all the best from Lisbon, loved the reaction, you both have a wonderfull way of living he songs and interpreting, loved it
Great music,good taste.
saw them in 79 at knebworth. was only 17.
You guys have to check this out live! 🤯
Please check out Kashmir, the live version by Page and Plant. The original version is an absolute classic and one of the best riffs of all time by Led Zeppelin, but the live version by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant showcases the the true intent of what they wanted the original Kashmir song to be, which incorporates many Middle Eastern sounds and highlights the culture. It's truly a masterpiece.
According to LZ, one of there more difficult tracks to play live.
My first thought, "I've been playing guitar for 50 years, why does this guy have all those?"
Then I look at mine, and realize we have a relationship, and have moved people, no matter what equipment I use.
Very difficult tune to play live, but Page did it, Knebworth 1979 he is on fire and so was John Bohman on the drums, give a listen if you can!
one of my favorite…🤘🏼🥰
Great reaction to the goats of rock. I wore this album out a little more than all the rest. The goats of prog are a band called YES and a song called Roundabout off the Fragile album is a good first listen. Enjoy your YES journey ✨️🎶✨️
Of course you must do the live Knebworth 1979 performance. That’s a given. But for something completely different ( Zeppelin is famous for its diversity of material and range) I would suggest the studio versions of either Battle of Evetmore, or No Quarter. Could not be more different from Achilles.
You could also go into their wonderful acoustic songs such as Going to California, Ten Years Gone, or the utterly sublime The Rain Song. So many more for you to discover ! 😁
This has always been a masterpiece. I hope you react to 'Kashmir' again. But next time do the Kashmir - Celebration Day; live performance. They are all near 60 years of age for that one; except the drummer, Jason Bonham, who is the son of deceased drummer John Bonham.
And the 1979 Kashmir performance too!!
This is the favorite track of Jimmy Page who conceived it like a guitar symphony . Most of the magic came with the fact that every instrument play a different line .Though it appears straightforward at first hearinf it is really quite rich. Mind that the galoping effect is mostly due to the bass (and not to the guitar as in a regular metal or hard-rock piece) . There is a flamenco passage quite similar as the one one can hear on Child in Time (by Deep Purple), but in a different context so no-one seems to notice it.
nobody else could do this!!
GOAT it’s a work of art, love your Zep reactions thank you 🙏
One of my favorite songs. Should have done the live at Knebworth version
Very cute reactions to the solo guys.
R&R !!! Great Reaction !!!! Hello from Detroit Michigan
One of the best things growing up with Detroit radio is even coming in at 10 minutes, they still played this on occasion
Thanks for doing the studio version which is the best!
This song or possibly Carouselambra (yeah that song) are my favorite but it is hard to pick a favorite from that many great songs.
Plant damaged his ankle in a car crash and was in a wheelchair when he recorded this. I think that's partly what inspired the title, the words and the theme. His accident took place in Greece (the island of Rhodes). Going on tour might seem like going into battle.
Not only one of the best songs ever, but the title is indeed one of the best puns in rock and roll, not that Rolling Stone has a Top 100 list for that or anything, but still.
Fun fact: Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart said that they basically ripped off the riff that kicks in at the beginning of Achilles Last Stand for their hit Barracuda. Once you hear it, those two songs will be tied together in your brain forever. :)
Love you guys. More Zep please. Also, you must also try Joe Bonamassa, with, and without Beth Hart. Joe is amazing by himself. Then you add Beth and wow , the perfect combination !! Hope you guys get around to it. And a secret weapon. The greatest female choice on planet earth. Lara Fabian ! Until next time, stay well, amd poppin for fresh
Probably the most "progressive rock" song Zep ever made... and an amazing classic. You two beautiful people are always fun to watch! By the way, the "Presence" LP for which this song was recorded was a more Plant-heavy LP because, at that point in LZ's journey, both Jimmy Page and John Bonham were so heavy into drugs and alcohol that it was hard to get them to be as productive in the non-touring stages to be as creative as they had been in the past, so Plant and JPJ took more of the reins on this LP. AND YOU CAN TELL because it's very much different than earlier Zep LPs (but, in my opinion, just as good but different).
Actually, partially true, but this album still has heavy guitar work and drum work. Where you truly see that shift is in their next, and final studio album, In Through The Out Door, which is heavily keyboard based Robert and JPJ did most of the studio work on it.
Great song!! One of my favorite Zeppelin tunes. And it's WAY past time for you 2 to react to some YES music.
You two are Awesome!! I would like to suggest this live Performance on the LZ CZcams channel. Led Zeppelin - How Many More Times (Danmarks Radio 1969) Thank You!!
A cool reaction video, how about doing a reaction video to the Irish guitar legend Rory Gallagher - Calling Card live at Hammersmith Odeon 1977. Rory Gallagher is considered one of the greatest guitarist ever and sold over 30 million albums thru the 1970's. Only the coolest people know and listen to Rory Gallagher, thank you.
Grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, ACDC and many more from the early 70's. But sadly most U.S. radio stations don't play classic rock like they used to (without paying for it). May I suggest a current rock band trying to bring rock back, they are called The Warning- "Automatic Sun" from the Tecate Pal Norte festival. Thank you for your time.
I love the way you guys describe how Zeppelin makes you feel.
Great reaction as usual.
Enjoy going down that wonderful rabbit hole with every song.
Keep on rocking with Zeppelin you can't go wrong. Big fan.
I would suggest the " Unledded" album They really highlight their whole careers on that .
This has to be viewed live! 🤷🏻♂️
The gallop feeling comes from JPJs bass lines
Have you guys considered exploring Alanis Morissette, a Canadian and American singer, songwriter and musician? Her album "Jagged Little Pill" is an amazing work.
As soon as I get off work I’m gonna jam this classic tune with you guys!
🤘🤘🤘❤️❤️❤️
You do realize the band has many albums thru out the years, you should make a chart of all the albums and the songs you've listened to on each album and see the bands growth thru out the years. This song was from "Presences while "since I've been loving you" is way back to led Zeppelin lll and there's a lot of songs to go, all different. ✌️
If you want to hear different styles from Led Zeppelin, try Led Zeppelin 1, Babe I’m Gonna Leave You. Studio version!!!
I love this song!! My favorite Led Zepplin song. Check out Nobody's Fault from the same album, Presence. IMO, best Led Zep album.
