Infernax - Death Animations

  • All of the death animations I could find in Infernax where Alcedor meets a grisly end. There are a few redundant deaths but in general I tried to exclude them. I also included trying to drown yourself at the start, the tornado easter egg, and the animations for choosing "Slay" for various choices. Plus the kill animation for Baphomet.
    The cage monster has an identical kill animation to imps. Azazel doesn't appear to have anything unique as you either catch fire or touching him just disintegrates your character (like with Mammon or the Ancient Wurm).
    If I did miss something unique do let me know.

    I can appreciate the way these deaths actually *show* just how dangerous and terrifying these can be in-universe. Usually with games like this, the characters in the game will say how horrendous these creatures are but when you actually go up against them, all they do is knock your character back when they hit them, or down when they kill them.
    Here though, you actually get to see just HOW they kill their victims and it’s brutal and horrific. I like it.

    I'm personally happy and sad at the same time about the change of the death theme from the demo. The old one was too eerie and painful to hear. While it told us that we were really screwed, that high pitch was too much for average human brain. Almost similar like Lavender town and not to mention that there were two of them and one of it was exactly from Forbidden Forest (C64).

    This... this is what modern AAA-games are missing.
    Showing the player the consequences of failure.
    Giving the player a reason not to fail other than ''The plot mandates it!''
    It raises the stakes in any given situation without it affecting the actual plot of the game so that the game itself can tell the story it wants to.
    I think it's a case of ''Don't tell it to the player, show it to the player.''
    I'm too daft to understand the story of nearly any given game during the first playthrough, so I need ''that little extra'' to motivate me why I shouldn't fail.
    This is why I like Dead Space 1 and Resident Evil 4 (Original)
    I hardly understand what's going on but if there's one thing I do understand is that dying not only set me back progress-wise, but the game forces me to watch something I don't wanna see.
    TL;DR
    AAA-games of today don't have the balls to punish the player anymore.
    As in, the players themselves, not their wallets.

    No matter how many games implement this sort of thing, I will always champion enemy specific death scenes. Games like Kirby, Shovel Knight and even most of the Doomlikes tend to create uniformed death scenes, but stuff like this goes the extra mile. And while some kills are similar to each other, I can forgive that when there are plenty of unique animations as is. And I enjoy the stylization of them, making everything red while leaving you and whatever kills you silhouettes.

    Never played before, just a recommendation video from CZcams but, man...
    Since I played Bloodstained, I feel like touching an enemy and receive damage is a cheap way of hurting the hero/character, I do prefer them to have something of a hitbox or at least a way to damage you aside of just being touched.

    • @CrankyTemplar
      @CrankyTemplar  Před 2 lety +2

      I think it's more that this style of NES games used contact damage and would be a bit odd to not have that occur, much like the knockback from being hit (despite as annoying as it can be to be knocked into instant death water/lava/pits).

    • @Linksmasher
      @Linksmasher Před 2 lety +2

      Yup, I understand, games such as Megaman, Super Metroid, any Castlevania series, or even Terraria had that way to receive damage. It is just a personal opinion of how I prefer the games to be nowadays. And I hope they keep it in that way, not saying that games like these are bad, just... Odd.

    • @brasilballs
      @brasilballs Před 2 lety +1

      @@Linksmasher to be perfectly honest, i couldn't agree with you more. i've had a few deaths to the shield knights and the mages in kastka palace that felt really cheap because i touched them by accident (or had a mage teleport into me) that wouldn't be a problem were they not able to deal contact damage. i understand why they put that feature in as it was kind of a theme of platformers back in the day but as i see it enemies that have a main form of attack that isn't just touching/ramming into you shouldn't deal contact damage.
      and even though this feature used to be common, there's a couple of examples of older games that differed from the norm. for example, the revenge of shinobi and its sequel for the sega genesis/mega drive; most of the enemies there only knock you back and don't deal any damage, with the exception of bosses. this makes the game flow a lot nicer and even though it lets you damage boost through some sections without any drawback, both games still manage to be quite challenging without having to rely on contact damage to boost difficulty
