      @@mercdragons thats a state problem.. ive never seen a weight rating here in texas. Ive read over the paperwork and on the backside i worked dispatch. The only information it gives besides vehicle vin, color, type, plate, owner, purcjase date and style is the price. I dont agree with an officer or Dispatcher seeing you dropped 95k on a pickup or 70k on a shelby and seeing what day you purchased it even if 40 years ago. Even semi truck plates are like this. I know when a company dropped 150k on a tractor and 40k on a trailer. Its just ridiculous..

WIll they park you on the side of the road if you're 800 lbs. overweight on a 14,000 lb GVWR trailer for example if you're otherwise legal? I don't have a problem with the overweight ticket per say, I just don't want to be left stranded on the side of the highway searching for a commercial operator to transfer my load to on a moments notice. What are the odds of finding someone in any timely manner?

      @@brandoncaldwell95 Texas has lots of trucks... and cars.... and every single one of them has a weight rating. Just because you don't register for a weight class doesn't make weight ratings non-existent. Weight ratings on states' registrations are largely for the purpose of charging the heavier vehicle more because they stress the roads more and increase roads' wear and tear - it's not for safety. So, yes, on registration it's to increase funding. Weight ratings on the vehicles, axles, and tires are most-definitely for safety.

      It becomes a bragging right when you're over weight where i am. Ive seen 40ft goosenecks stacked double rows. Talking 30 bales sometimes 32 if a deck over neck trailer at 1100lbs a bale. We are talking 35,000lbs not including the 8,000lbs trailer on a 1 ton. Typically you will see 22,000lbs on goosenecks when their actual ratings are for 16,000lbs loaded. I've actually overloaded my old truck by double before. Did fine without issue and passed many cops without a care.

    @rhutch3876 Před 5 lety +13

    Tim, I just want to add that while considering tire ratings don’t forget the spare tires on both your trailer and tow vehicle. They need to be the same size and rating as the other tires, in fact they should be the exact same tire as the others so that they have the same tread pattern and rubber density “ hardness “ as the other tires, so that during braking they will have the same traction on the road surface so they don’t cause a stability issue. This is really important on tow vehicles equipped with sophisticated anti lock brake systems that may not be able to compensate for a different tires friction properties during hard braking. Remember you don’t want create an unsafe condition when using a mismatched spare tire that is there to help get you home safely when you need it.
    P.s. Don’t forget to check the air in your spare and carry a little air compressor that can provide enough pressure for your tires requirements before towing.

      Great advice. I do the same with my trailers, all tires are matching brand, tread, and size....makes it much easier to keep track of that way and you know that you have the same load rating on every tire...I see trailers all the time with mismatched tires some passenger car tires on a heavy duty trailer hauling heavy equipment and you are like WTF is that guy thinking....same tires you find blown up all over the road too HAHA!!

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 5 lety

      Well given the huge number of pickup truck buyers today that buy a pickup truck to cruise around town in, I guess it makes sense to have passenger/private vehicle plates for pickups. I have truck plates on my 3/4 ton pickup, but my Ford Ranger just has regular passenger vehicle plates because well let's face it the Ranger is more of a grocery getter than a heavy hauler LOL.
      I understand what you are saying, but with the experience of seeing what the majority of truck people are doing where I live its not hauling/towing....err ok fine they hauled their groceries home from Winco, or Walmart HAHA!!! Many trucks today just don't get used as trucks so there are a few states with different plates for different usage levels.

Trooper Hoover made it sound like if your total weight (truck and trailer) was over the registered weight you could be cited. I mistakedly went through a scale with a Penske truck loaded with household goods towing a trailer with a car on it I was over 26000 pounds combined but under the GVWR of the truck. Honestly when i started out i was the same way after while you relax. If you know you are legal nothing to worry about. You get pulled in for a inspection. Be Light Hearted about it don't have a pissed off attitude so come off yelling at them for wasting your time or some other bullshit. your 10-15 min inspection all of sudden became a lot longer. Example me and a driver that worked for me "after the inspection he didn't work for me anymore" Both had the same trucks and trailer pretty equal in weight trucks are only a month old, but we didn't have the CSVA sticker in the windows since they was new so we both got pulled in at the same time. Now i wasn't worried about weight both was hauling empty 5 gal plastic water jugs so no weight really. So i figured level 1 inspection. Me i'm all happy go lucky joking with the officer Found one minor Issue with a wire nothing to give me a ticket for just said i may want to put a rubber grommet in the hole it was coming through looked like the factory forgot too. Glanced over my Log book gave me my clean bill of health.
      Now my drivers turn. I warned him time and time again keep crap off the Dash if you have a clean truck doesn't look like a pig pen they don't look at you as hard. and well he kept the inside fairly clean expect for crap on the dash. Anyways he pulls in i can see he is pissed He opens his door cans of redbull fall out not a good start. I have no idea why he is pissed anyways starts jumping the Officer ass Officer puts up with it ask him to open the hood he wouldn't do it. told him to do it himself and walks away from the truck. Well i knew this wasn't going to go well. Officer asked if i would i said sure i dont' blame him he didn't wanna climb in it it stunk bad worse i've ever seen the truck asked me to hand him his log book and i did praying to god he was not running more then 1. Yup he was. Hey i'm no Angel i've run over my hours from time to time But holly crap not like this. 15 mins turned in to 2 hours. That officer went over the whole truck with a fine tooth comb kept telling me sorry i told him i understand i'm not worried since we was 20 mins from our delivery point and about 15 mins from our yard and the load didn't have to be delivered till tomorrow afternoon. Well after all was said and done truck trailer pass.. Driver was put out of service due to his log book. I talked to the officer asked him if he unhooks from the trailer if he could take the truck to the yard he said yes cause then he was off duty.
      So we got back to the yard i told him get his personal effects out of the truck he was fired. I drop my trailer went back picked up the other so i can get the loads dropped off. Moral to the story is. There is worse things that could happen the DOT writing you a ticket. Oh and you think they guy would of stayed in a better mood With all my drivers each Level 1 inspection you pass violation free other then for minor comments saying should be addressed. They get $100 bonus If trucks are kept clean inside and out even more money. out of the 1 year he worked for me no bonus for clean truck and 1 for passing inspection out of 22 inspections. All minor infractions but still hurts my Safer score it may not follow them to their next job but sure hurts me till it drops off.

    I recently put new tires on my trailer. The trailer tires have always been as expensive as or more than truck tires, but they never seem to last more than a year or two. So, this time I bought truck tires with a 50,000 mile rating and put them on the trailer. The trailer pulls better, the tires are quiet, and the load rating is higher than the trailer tires that I just took off; all at a better price. You don't need to buy "trailer" tires, any quality truck tire will surpass the needs of your car hauler or utility trailer.

      ..two bottom plow and a small harrow. We had to sit in the police station until the justice of the peace came in at 9 am. When asked why we had the used farm equipment, my dad told him..truthfully..that he was taking it to a farmer near our cabin in exchange for barn siding that he would be removing. (In the area, where the soil is very sandy, the farmers do not like to buy new equipment because the sand destroys them too quickly, so if they can obtain equipment from an area that is not sandy, that’s to their advantage,) The JP dismissed us and we were then free to leave. This was before the interstates, but after that we did not bring any used farm machinery up for exchange..
      The second time was at a weigh station on 90/94 as you enter WI from IL. I had a new 1990 Ford 4 wheel drive pickup that I used primarily for a Jaco slide in extended camper. The truck had a 7 L gas engine and was as strong as an ox. The rear end would only drop a half inch when the fully loaded camper was on it and the same was true for what ever I put in it..cement, lumber, compost..it always got from 13 to 11 MPG, fully loaded or empty. This time I had it loaded to the rails with compost and on top of the compost I had lumber, including two 16 foot 2x10’s and I had tied red plastic flags to the end of the lumber.
      Down the road I was pulled over by the DOT for not having any flags..which had apparently blown off..the staples were still there but the flags were not..so I had to come back to the scale house where they weighed me..had just filled the two 21 gallon tanks and I also had 10 gallons of diesel fuel in diesel cans..and in the cab with me as we sat on the scale was my wife.
      We were then asked to pull around to the back of the scale house, where the officer asked me where we were going. I said to our WI farm. He then said, good thing you said to your farm, because you have 12,485 pounds on a truck rated for 8,000 pounds, but for farm use, 12,000 pounds. We give you a 500 pound extension, so by 15 pounds you saved yourself a very big overweight fine..but without a flag, you can not leave.
      A trucker was watching and listening and he said, here..take one of my flags..it was cloth and on a stick. He tied it to the back of the lumber and said these guys can be really ah’s.He wouldn’t take any money for the flag aand when the DOT person saw that there was a flag on the lumber, he said we were free to leave.
      I understand the hazard of un flagged material and from then on, I always had it securely flagged and hopefully was hopefully was never overloaded, because I do see the potential for problems when a vehicle is over loaded and have never been stopped again.

    Other states also may not have a GVW for registration purpose but can be a tonnage or even a gcw for registration (truck/trailer). Also some state may allow the summed gawrs as the vehicle gvw.

    One thing the trooper skipped about tire/trailer/ axle weight ratings is the weight of the trailer itself!
    Say your trailer has 4 tires with a 2500lb weight rating... that gives you 10,000lb legal weight rating/ carrying capacity of those 4 trailer tires... most people would say “A-ok I can haul 10,000lbs no problem on my trailer!” But they forget they need to subtract their trailer’s weight from that! So with a say 1500lb trailer empty now you can only put 8500lbs of cargo/ load on the trailer!

    • @johnirwin1837

      John, you are over complicating it.
      Notice there are 3 sets of scales there. Drive on, and see the front truck axle, back truck axle, and trailer tandems all Weighed separately. Those are the numbers that count.
      Of course some of the weight is transferred from truck to trailer...but that is already accounted for by weighing each axle (or tandem) separately.

I took the tires that came off and showed the dealership that the tires were wrong for that truck. They had 2 more on the lot and showed them that they were wrong. After a meeting with the owner of the dealership and a representative for FCA ,they did amit the tires were wrong and paid the entire bill. I'm an owner operator truck driver as well as a weekend car enthusiast/drag racer. I know that the "diesel bears" are all about safety. I am too since I want everyone to get home safely. I've only been D.O.T.'d twice in over 25 years of professional driving and passed with no problem both times. My sister in law, an O.S.H.P. Sergeant, says that it's because I keep my equipment clean and polished. That way, the D.O.T. inspectors know that it's in top condition when I pass them on the road or roll a scale. With that said, I wish the officer in the video would've also touched on the GCVWR (gross COMBINED vehicle weight rating). Your F-350 might have a GVWR of 11000# but that's just for the truck itself. The GCVWR for your truck is probably in excess of 20000# if it's set up correctly. This is the rating for the truck AND trailer as well as the cargo. This is also where many people and businesses run into trouble with licencing, insurance etc. This is a great series though. I'm glad that I found it. Even though I've been pulling trailers since I was a kid on the farm back in the 80's, I've learned a few new things as well as been reminded of some that I'd forgotten over the years.

    One day at the scale by Shelby ,Montana was called in the scale. I show the officer my permits . He told me all my permits were wrong so he fine me and sold me the proper permits. Hours later ,same day arrived at a scale south of Montana on I-15 I was called inside. The officer looked at my permits and told me that I had the wrong permits and he had to fine me and sell me the proper permits. At that point I just lost it . I answer him back “ you’re telling me that your co-worker fine me for nothing and sold me the wrong permits and you’re trying to do the same.” At that point .he told me “ Just Go, Go “ He probably knew he didn’t stand a chance in the court of law.

I have a 78 GMC K35 dually that I use to pull a 36' 5th wheel twice/yr and a 20' all steel car trailer with my 74 Camaro drag car a lot more. The truck is more than capable of this, but, I ALWAYS use a weight distributing hitch and sway control for the car trailer.

    Great advice. I can't believe how many incompetent people are on the road and have no idea about proper axle weights. Ask about their tires and they're clueless. Maybe they need automatic fail on these CDL tests for questions that are critical to safety. The tests are for simpletons, they lack understanding what is really needed.
