- Trooper Hoover inspects the trailer for Tractor Time with Tim! He takes a close look at the hitch, chains, break away system, axles, brakes, frame, ramp storage and more. The trailer is in worse condition that we thought due to salt and other road debris. These are all issues that might be on your trailer!

Brent Hoover is one good enforcement officer, always willing to teach and explain to the driving public so the highways are safer. As I always say in my comments to him “We’re working together, for safety’s sake!”
best thing to say "worked during my pre trip"
Really nice of trooper Hoover to show what they look for, most roadside troopers aren’t as pleasant as trooper Hoover and god forbid you ask a question
This Trooper is a great teacher!! I don't wanna be unsafe, and now He shows us what to look for!! Win/Win!
next this cop gonna tell you about health safety to and you gonna jump for joy. Fat cop representing safetey lmao
The Trooper seems like a great guy that is focused on our safety. Thank You Trooper & TTWT.
The D.O.T. officers I've met in my state for commercial inspections are the same way, really laid back. They'd rather explain to you what's going on and why, than give you a ticket. Its like they're more passionate about trucks and trailers than the guys actually driving the trucks and trailers lol.
only on camera
Trooper Hoover, thank you. Your comments are common sense and clearly spoken.
Sobriety checkpoint: Can you say "Truck and Trailer Tuesday on Tractor Time with Tim, and Trooper Hoover". Good job!
Even if I were sober, I doubt I could say all that without messing it up. Good way to test someone!
Handcuffs. I haven’t even had a beer in 3 months..
What a great trooper! This is how all troopers should act. Not afraid of the camera and down to earth. Good on you Trooper Hoover; stay safe Sir!
Edit: misspelled a word.
I use a bungee cord to hold the chains tight under the ball everytime. It keeps everything from dragging but, flexes when the need comes.
Good idea; I'll do that with my trailers (I have three but all different sizes).
Just twist the chain until they don’t reach the ground anymore
I also use a short Bunge, and have for years.
This kind of educational video does more to inform people and improve safety on the roadway than 20 weigh stations. Many people just don't have a ton of experience with trailers. They usually just hook it up and go.
Might be good to have a video on the breakaway box and how to repair/replace and correctly connect the cable to the truck. Loving this series -- so much useful information.
Very informative series, Thank you and Officer Hoover for each of the presentations.
The trooper is absolutely correct on the emergency brake activation cable. Great catch trooper.
Mine ebrake is attached to my bumper
I knew that when i started towing skidsteers at 16yrs old.
"Great catch"!! Except he didn't mention the fact that the cable was longer than the chains! DUHHHH! You would want the emergency brakes to engage before the emergency chains are tight! "Great Miss" if you ask me....
I dunno. If the main hitch detaches, I’m ready for the e brake to be engaged!!
@@robbiebooth2980 the emergency brake is there in case the safety chains fail after the trailer becomes detached. You don't want the trailer to come unhitched and lock up the brakes while still on the safety chains. That would make a bad situation worse.
Big thanks for all the great information Tim and Trooper Hoover...stay safe out there!
This is a good review for experienced and inexperienced alike! It is good to be reminded of those things we may take for granted. Thanks for sharing this!
Education with ISP "AWESOME" Thank you and Thank you Trooper Hoover. Learned a few things. THANK YOU!
Tim Hoover the only cop I like he's a good guy showing us how to be safer on the road without fineing us
He’s on video, can act like a dick.
Thanks Tim and Trooper Hoover, if this video helps to prevent even one accident it well worth all the time and effort you all put into it.
Great job guys. I wish more were so attentive. Pre-tripping your vehicle/equipment takes just a few minutes but can literally be a life saver. Thanks Tim, Christy & Trooper Hoover!
You are110% right! 😊
logger Wade has had trooper Hoover on he seems like a good guy. alot of inspectors could learn from him, he seems to educate and truly care not just meet ticket quotas
Do you care about how fat and unhealty he is? or does tht not matter. Hes like an unhealthy fat personal trainer teling you how to live safe and health
Troops Hoover is a great guy he is looking out people safety just like other trooper all over the country
Thanks for video Tim . Trooper Hoover, he dose a great job explaining what is and isnt a violation have a great day be safe.
This needs to be taught to our teens before they get a permit and they need this knowledge far before they get a driver's license.
80% of them will never use it
Or you can reach your own kids duh
I'd bet 90%+ of private trailers have no working brakes, especially the breakaway brakes.
Doug Shrader in SC small trailers aren required to be licensed so they also aren’t enforced to have working lights or stop lamps.
Yep im guilty. No brake away battery. My brakes work great though. I need my brakes since im 13k back there. First time i pulled my tractor on this trl (just bought a week earlier) i didnt have brakes and yes my 3/4 could stop it but man. I kept my speed down a touch and i slowed early and watched closely for a panick brake situation. Also it was a short run. Now i make sure brakes are good cause i scale 22k
Hell in Alabama, 90% of the trailers dont even have lights!
You're wrong.....it's 95 percent
I'd bet that you're right, but I'm glad there's still at least a small percentage of us that take safety seriously. Every trailer I buy gets a full repair/upgrade of mechanical, braking, and electrical systems. I'll just keep a safe following distance behind everyone else.
One of the better offerings on CZcams. Extremely well done. Thank you.
These DOT guys are great to work with!! After driving semi OTR for 26 years solo I have a great respect for these guys. Some drivers hate them. I’ve ALWAYS treated them with respect and courtesy and never received 1 ticket in 26 years. Not that I didn’t give them a reason! They’re just doing their job.
This is really great that the Highway Patrol and Police are participating in these informational CZcams Videos. It give everyone a heads up on what needs to be maintained on Truck and Trailer.
This may be a four year old video but has lots of great info. Thank you Tim & Kristi and Trooper Hoover.
Tim, I hear you about just checking systems before you leave home. I got pulled over a few weeks ago because of a bad tail light. I told the cop I had just purchased new lamps and he laughed out loud until I whipped open the bag with them! That got him to chuckle and let me go...
Why can't more inspectors be like this instead of gunning for a trucker? It feels like a lot of them get the badge and it goes to their head, they forget that sometimes we all make mistakes and we are all human and can use a break
I've never met otherwise, and I get pulled constantly because I transport HAZMAT full time.
He’s only being nice cause he’s on camera!! He’s a dick when you roll across his scale and wants to inspect you!!
All about them Benjamin's!
Roll through Cottonwood ,CA scale... THOSE GUYS can be a real pita.
These guys and gals get pressured by their Supervisors to have some tickets each month to show they are doing their jobs. It's the same for Traffic Cops.
Always do your pre trip on truck and trailer before leaving
One of the best videos you've done. Thank you!!!
So, when it rains it pours? Something good comes out of this. I, fortunately, don't do this work anymore, but when I did, there were nightmares. Another great video. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Good series of educational videos. It was nice of Trooper Hoover to take time to work with you guys on this series. Stay safe.
Proud 2 say Brent has been a friend for years.... good man
Thanks Tim for making these videos. Great information. I really appreciate it.
He might have mentioned it on a previous video. Check to make sure your tires on your trailer are at the proper PSI I have a 10K dump trailer and they are rated for 3350 lbs at 80 PSI. I had 2 tires at 50 PSI and realized it really quick after it was loaded no where near a air compressor replacement tires aren’t cheap. I learned the hard way.
I've added an eye-bolt just below by rego/license plate for my emergency breakaway brakes - keeps it clear and independent of the towing hitch :)
I do the same thing just in case the tow hitch breaks my to hitch is below my bumper so my safety chain hooks to my bumper even my electric break cable is on the bumper
This was a really good video, thank you for posting it. With as many miles as I do on the freeway with my farm trailers, I pretty much treat it like a commercial trailer situation. Rewired my gooseneck because the breakaway was inoperable, the plug was cracked and filled with water, the brakes had been cut because the wiring had been rerun with 18 gauge by the previous owner and had gotten smoked. Pretty ridiculous. Now all the lights work, brakes work again, and all it needs is new lumber and some black touch up paint. Keep up the good content. 👍
We took apart my father-in-law's horse trailer brakes last summer to inspect them. It had been sitting parked for most of the summer before out in New Mexico. 3 of the drums looked ok, the 4th one however, when we pulled the drum off, a mouse skeleton fell out. As we dug around in the nest it had made, we found a snake skeleton about 2 foot long coiled up in there as well. That was probably the best/worst thing I've ever found.
Thanks for the video. Love when the Police help like this. Promotes the protect and serve portion of the job.
Another great episode, I bought a dump trailer today and this is right on time for me.
I had the same type of break away on my trailer when I bought it. Took it in to. I replaced it with one that had a Bungie type cord. A lot better the. The stock setup and it give it a better hookup and it like a spring coil type of Bungee. Love it.
Our Troopers are the best of the best!!!
Hi Tim,
Glad to see Truck and Trailer Tuesday, you're making the world safer. Here's a small tip to share - we just bought a big dump trailer and for the first time need a 2 5/16 ball. To prevent confusion, I painted the 2 inch hitch bars and hitches fluorescent orange, and the 2 5/16 hitches fluorescent green. If you were to put the bigger hitch on the smaller ball there would be big trouble. Bonus - the hitch is easier to see in the backup camera.
I always see the Toyota SUV rolling down the interstate hauling a 32 foot cabin cruiser. They never get pulled over.
It's legal when they're in the left lane.

No money in pulling over Johnny travel trailer...
They get more money from us tractor trailer trucks. We are there cash cows. And there new fraud is a even bigger issue. They set up a construction zone from state line to state line and just love grabbing us truckers when it is set up but no one even present or active. And Indiana crooks that they are will write you up for speeding in a active work zones when it isn't active
@@joshweiser7737 "Again its about safety." Bs, its about generating revenue.
Happy to see that a twist or two to the safety chains is ok. Informative! Happy towing.
A chain is not designed to take a load while twisted. The chain could fail and snap. Especially with a shock load. Safety chains should be the proper length to begin with. My trailers are designed so the safety chains can be adjusted in length. In a pinch the safety chains can be raised up off the pavement using a rope or bungee cord. Coiled safety cables are another option.
Agree with Shawn, as a farmer we knew a twisted chain will break under a load, I'd use a bungee cord instead.
I was surprised to hear that they allowed the chains to be twisted. It seems like a bungee would be a better option. You never want the chains to be needed because the trailer will go to the right with the crown of the road, pulling the rear of the tow vehicle with it, turning the tow vehicle into oncoming traffic.
Tired old mechanic I use Zip Ties to keep the chains up enough not to drag the pavement.
@@shawnwright2356 Florida does not allow bungee cords to hold anything. AZ, and CA will write a ticket for any twist in a chain. Hello campers, welcome to my world. 38 years over the road, and now I don't even want to tow my camper when I'm not working.
OH! Wait until they start enforcing ELD for private rigs over 10001#. I see a bunch of fifth wheel campers going up for sale real cheap.
Great video!!!!! Last year I flipped my trailer to do maintenance on it .Was surprised to see the salt damage now I guess I will repaint the bottom of the trailer ever 2 years. Love the website 👌
Thank you Tim this was good information and is appreciated and thank Trooper Hoover
Thank you for the chain knowledge. Always heard the opposite.
Didn't expect the video to be as useful information. Great video.
Gotta love ISP nice, and helpful....more troopers should be like these guys
Great video, Tim. An overlooked topic for sure.
Great video I learned a couple of things to change on my trailer. Thanks to the officer for the education.
Alot of companies, including all brand new driveshafts ive had custom made, are never painted. They all say the paint will imbalance it. Yay or nay, i still dust a little on them, because i cant think that surface rust would be balanced better than a clean surface with a dust coat on it.
Excellent video with good information. Thanks for sharing!
Another great video, thanks Tim! And Thanks to Trooper Hoover for sharing all this great knowledge. One thing though, lets talk about the strain relief on your trailer wiring. Your wires will last a lot longer if you get that outer jacket into the strain relief clamp on that plug.
Great series of videos Tim. Very helpful. 👍🏻
When I saw the rust I was going to ask if that trailer was one you were borrowing because I remembered that yours was not very old. Then when you said it was YOUR trailer I was like "Wow!". The rust on the frame and the corrosion around the hitch was surprising. I live in the snow belt also and my landscape trailer is around 8 years old and it has nowhere near that amount of rust.
Thank you Trooper!!!
Excellent series
Lots of great knowledge. Working on becoming a Commercial Vehicle Officer for the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Thanks for the video and great knowledge from a great officer
You know officer Hoover is a good guy if he has a Dachshund!!
I’m not a trucker but even I find your videos interesting.Trooper Hoover does a good job of explaining what to look for.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, great information.
I certainly appreciate all of your videos Tim.
Took delivery of a 1025R today, your CZcams channel was a deciding factor in which machine I purchased.
Thank You!
Congratulations, Tim! I’m sure you will love it!
Very nice for IN State Police for helping do these great information. Officer Hoover can explain things in plain English. Great job and he needs to be in front of the camera more too...
I am glad that he pointed out the cable I put mine on the frame or the bumper so if you would have a total failure of your hitch the brakes would still be activated on the trailer
Be sure to tighten the ball too. Great Video and thanks for the info.
If your shank on the ball is 1 ¹/⁴" (a lot of 2 ⁵/¹⁶" hitches are) the torque spec is 450 ft/lbs. That lock washer should be completely compressed.
lock washers do nothing. that nut isn't tight.
I don’t doubt your spec, but who has a torque wrench with that capacity lying around???
@@chrisbreidenbaugh3697 That's when you hit it with enough ugga duggas to stop turning and then put a 10' pipe on your wrench and see if it turns.
Chris Breidenbaugh, I do....
I just use my impact wrench set to highest setting to put the ball on tight. They never come loose.
Thank you as always for the educational videos, stay safe out there Trooper
Kinda good video, more people who tow trailers need this
Don't forget to tighten the ball nut another 1/2 turn to close up the lock washer.
Very good presentation Trooper Hoover.
Thanks for the lesson
Electrical always work until it doesn't. I check mine at home, drove about a mile to pick up a car. When we had the car loaded I notice warning light had come on. Luckily it was just a loose connection and a quick fix.
Great video Tim trooper Hoover dose a great job with the education side of enforcement he has also don videos with logger Wade he dose a great job explaining what is and isnt a violation have a great day be safe.
...does .......done.
Very helpful ! Thank you!
Thanksfor this great educational video 👍👍👍👍👏👏
Great advise. I agree that safety should be the main focus and not on the category of commercial vs non-commercial.
It was nice of them to walk you through this
I have to appreciate the fact that officer Hoover made a point, several times, to differentiate between commercial operation and private operation and that private operation is not subject to enforcement of regulations. Doesn't mean anybody should be stupid, reckless or irresponsible in their private use of trailers, just that we are not subject to state revenue extortion. Regulations, codes and statutes are for commercial transportation.
Really enjoy these types of videos!!!!
This has been an awesome video series.
PERFECT!!!!!!
Great video, thank for taking the time to make it.
Thanks for watching!
Very informative. Great video !
Thanks for a great video series.
One tip: always check your trailer lights on the back before each trip and if not equipped reflective tape on the back also in case your lights fail to prevent accidents.
A 30 second walk-around is what I always do on my camper and boat trailer.
3m conspicuity tape aka d.o.t tape
These guys can find a violation on brand new equipment and hit you with that OOS for low blinker fluid.
Green or orange fluid?
That trailer has a suspension, it's a dexter torsion axle. It has rubber in the axle tube that absorbs suspension shocks. They can get bagged out to the point of a no-go, just not as obvious as leaf springs.
Make sure that ball is tight I had a friend that had one come off
Veri informative and worth listening to
This is great info !
Thank you for this video
Sooo...the trailer chains fail and rip in half (both), the trailer manages to rip off the trailer ball (most likely the trailer is flipped up in the air or on its side, and somehow we seem to think the break away is going to help.
My boat trailer has jumped off the ball twice and the safety chain kept the trailer in line and behind the truck. I now double check it is seated tightly to the ball and the lever action has the tongue locked down to the ball properly. My fifth wheel has locked up its brakes when the emergency switch cable got caught on the hitch bolts and pulled out on a tight turn, so I know it works.
I had a cement mixer come off the ball and the chains were not connected properly and the mixer slid down the road and stopped upright without tipping over so breakaway brakes might have helped stop it sooner
More often human error.
LOL! It worked when I did my walk around.
I am very surprised Trooper Hoover didn’t mention the tires as something he checks. I see trailers all the time with tires that are not fit for safe travel.
Guns4Fun FreedomKeeper. Up in Canada the tires play the biggest roll in weight to be carried they look at the load rating of each tire and make sure it is over the weight carried if not you get a over weight ticket. With smart phones they look up the price your carrying and see the weight of it if not you get to go to the scale to weight
Informative. Thanks
Brother thank you for the video, as county mountie in texas. I appreciate it, I see daily dangerous trailers failure to secure loads. My best partners mother was killed when unsecured load fell on her car killing her. I take it very serious, and I wish to impress upon pick up owners secure your cargo, it takes a few minutes, but can save you a lot money and anguish.
Bumper pull is the majority till you come out west then we use goose neck a lot.
For sure! My truck is setup with the gooseneck since I have a lot of back problems. I can't do the lifting I did when I was 20. My fifth wheel trailer uses the gooseneck hitch but my 16' utility trailer and my canoe trailer both use the bumper pull receiver. Brakes are installed on the two large trailers but not on the canoe trailer. Some of the roads go through some pretty tall mountains (12,000 to over 13,000 ft) Makes it pretty dicey if you lose a trailer when you are going downhill and a 1,000 or 2,000 foot dropoff.
What a great video! Thanks to Trooper Hoover, Tim and Kristy (sp?) behind the camera.
Hi Tim: While you are doing a little PM on your trailer and truck underside, I strongly suggest you wirs brush off any and all rust due to salt crossion and then spray "FLUID FILM" onver the entire underside of both your truck and trailer. I stoppped buying FLUID FILM by the spray can and now I buy it by the 5 gallon bucket and use a sprayer as recommended by the manufacturer (Note: Do not use a garden sprayer).
Best - Michael
Hi Tim: Google “Fluid Film” and you will quickly find and read that Fluid Film is the ideal product to spray on the underside of your truck and trailer. Note: Spray in the inside of structural members to control and stop rust.
Best - Michael
Michael; it wasn’t me who said that
My bad. I thought you made the comment Tim.
