I well remember that night when the late Hermon Frederick, the husband of Jean Frederick ("Hold back the Night," "He Promised"), returned to sing despite being health challenged. The celebration of we saints for his victorious return was very genuine.
This is gospel music. I wish there were more choirs that sang like this. I always come back to watch again and again. Thank God for the people that post these videos it really fills me
there is something soulless about the way the music sounds now. I've heard it described as hip-hop gospel. it just seems to leave you with an empty feeling. this is real music! thank you so much for these postings of St. James
Can We Talk about that Lead Singer. Now I don't know every word he said, But he SAAANGGG Da Mess Outta Dat Song,,,lol and The Poses n Clappin,,,,I Ain't Got Nu'An Ta Say,,,,,,,lol yes I do,,,lol That's real Gospel Singing n I Love It and Miss It Thank God For CZcams
I praise God for videos like this. As someone else stated it does remind you of how church used to be. I'm trying my to keep the tradition of playing the organ the old fashion way going. You're right, no one plays like this anymore but I'm trying to bring it back and keep it alive.
You can tell the organist DEFINITELY learned from Rev. Nicks. His playing sounds just like Rev. Nicks. He was feeling that song.. Love St. James Choir.
I've followed this gr8 choir since their "Child Of The King" project on Gospel Records label. Glad 2 c JD. St. James is definitely one of the "classic gospel music sounds'.
Thank you sooo much. To anyone who takes the time to share these videos - Videos of the way church used to be, how we used to sing, how we used to worship and praise. These songs are immortal and just as powerful and meaningful now - and full of depth! I praise God for you!
My churches know better, but this right here is all the proof you need on whether to keep the Hammond or not in the sanctuary. That brotha is heating that organ up.
I came upon this video years ago. I have wondered myself about God’s Grace. I don’t know either. But- Listening to this version has given me the inspiration to keep seeking. I am just thankful for His Grace. Yet it’s all about His Love. Thank you for this upload.
Good God Almighty!! This is it right here! These are the originals eventhough sister Loretta Oliver kills it in her own way. I'll take both. The point is they both can testify about it, and we can feel it.
Hammond organ has it 'sold up' in the black churches and the white pentecostal churches but the question is there any good old school organists left that can them with this 'right feel?' I miss this great sound!!!
Marcell77, do you remember St James 'participation each year in the Russell Street Baptist Church's pageant of Choirs programs? This was my 1st awareness of Charles Nicks and St. James. I still have every album they ever recorded and will cherish them all my life. Renee Thomas, the Fredericks and so many other soloists have touched my heart over these years. Bless you for posting on CZcams!! It brings back the Best memories of my life in Detroit.
@MrReminisce-you're so right. But I do know a guy who talked a church into getting rid of their Hammond C-3 because he didn't have a need for it. He didn't play organ, only keyboard. I said to the head deacon "Black churches don't get rid of a Hammond organ because older saints love to hear 'Amazing Grace' on the organ" He said he didn't know what he was thinking when they did it.
Uncle J.D. wore the gloves because of him having lupus. They really weren't a fashion statement 4 him.The illness made the nerves in his hands real sensitive.
I well remember that night when the late Hermon Frederick, the husband of Jean Frederick ("Hold back the Night," "He Promised"), returned to sing despite being health challenged. The celebration of we saints for his victorious return was very genuine.
You know you're singing when all you have to do is sing the first word "something" and the church goes up.
Truth that
This is gospel music. I wish there were more choirs that sang like this. I always come back to watch again and again. Thank God for the people that post these videos it really fills me
Oh l remember the first night l heard this song, l was just a child but it filled my heart with so much joy...We don't have music like this anymore.

Black folks just know how to have some church and give God all his praises!
My churches know better, but this right here is all the proof you need on whether to keep the Hammond or not in the sanctuary. That brotha is heating that organ up.

2 words Mt. Elliot & Mack
Good God Almighty!! This is it right here! These are the originals eventhough sister Loretta Oliver kills it in her own way. I'll take both. The point is they both can testify about it, and we can feel it.
Oh bless the Lord oh my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Something about the grace of my God. Ooooo Jesus.
My momma raised me on Saint James Mass Choir
that is my uncle singing
his name is Darryl Houston!! he was an organist for Rev. Charles Nicks & St. James!! he currently plays for Aretha Franklin.
Be Blessed.
Rev. Charles Nicks wrote this.
Be Blessed.
He sang that like he truly trusted in the grace of God!!!! Reminds me of the song by the beatles..."Something in the way"...
He did. Such a wonderful man. He was sick and later succumbed but always trusted the Lord. I miss him.
Darryl Houston ‼️🙌🏾
JUST YES!
if i remember correctly Darryl now plays for Greater Quinn AME Church in Detroit.
Daryl Houston and Rev. Nicks sound alike to me. Both of them are making that organ talk on these videos.
Hammond organ has it 'sold up' in the black churches and the white pentecostal churches but the question is there any good old school organists left that can them with this 'right feel?' I miss this great sound!!!
Something about it!
I want to play like that. I wish both of you would visit Charlotte.

@drumz2praze No... In a lot of churches, it's in the fellowship halls being torn up by the children!!!!
yes it is.
Now see...this is when church was church. Can you even find a Hammond in the church now?
Uncle J.D. wore the gloves because of him having lupus. They really weren't a fashion statement 4 him.The illness made the nerves in his hands real sensitive.
@CAMcCree It's in D flat.
J.D. wore the gloves because of him having lupus. The illness made the nerves in his hands real sensitive.
