The Abrahamic religions -Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - are three of the most popular religions in the world today and each has different holy books. While canon lists may be different between traditions, it’s broadly true that the holy books of these traditions are the Tanakh, the Christian Bible, and the Qur’an, respectively. The Christian Bible includes the Tanakh but does not include the Qur’an, while the Qur’an does not explicitly include either the old or new testament but does include quotes from them as well as endorsements and criticisms of both. Our principal focus here will be on the Qur’an. In addition, there are, for each of these religions, a number of works of great importance which are not strictly part of their central holy texts such as rabbinical literature, apocrypha, sira literature, and the Hadith. The latter two terms are of primary importance in understanding the Qur’an from a traditional Islamic perspective. So, what is the Qur’an? What can these roughly 50 years of academic research tell us about it? What can Islamic tradition tell us about it? Let’s find out.

I hate to tell you this but you shouldn't have relied on Brubaker as much as you did. He never intended his work to be this significant. His book has methodological blunders, unproven assertions and mistakes in it. As a result, a response has now come out by a world renowned scholar in Qur'anic manuscripts by Dr Tayyar Altikulac called "Refutation of Daniel Alan Brubaker's "Correction in Early Qur'an Manuscripts"".

Pretty objective and skeptical view which I can at least appreciate. I would love to know your thoughts on the Birmingham Manuscript, different Qira’ats and a better dive into the oral tradition of the Quran. It didn’t appear to me that you focused on how Quranic oral preservation could be superior to normal oral preservation. Also, it’s hard to take you seriously when you deal in absolutes. You mentioned there is no corroborating evidence for Muhammad (pbuh) existing.
One more thing I’d suggest is to broaden your sources. So far, the sources you gave seem very deliberate and agenda driven. I would urge you to criticize the Islamic historical sources as well as they should provide a better insight into the text of the Quran.
But, like some other people in the comments, I don’t believe this is hate speech or even malice. Every ideology deserves to be critiqued and that’s what I believe this is.

There are a few minor errors in the presentation:
    * The Quran does not quote either the Tanakh or the New Testament. While the Quran refers to stories found in the Old Testament, it does not quote verbatim anything directly from the Tanakh, and its retelling of common stories differ in details from those in the Old Testament.
    * In regards to the New Testament, none of the stories in the Quran match those found in the New Testament, but the stories regarding Jesus and Mary do match stories in apochryphal gospels rejected for inclusion into the New Testament canon.
    * The Apochryphal is not the same as either rabinnic literature or the siras and the hadiths. The vast majority of Christians reject the apochryphal literature, while Jews accept rabbinic literature and most Muslims accept the siras and the hadiths

So few people were literate in 7th century Arabia that even the act of reading itself was regarded as miraculous. As Islam makes scant reference to the 10 Commandments in the Koran, it is likely that Mohammed would have taken the story of Moses or Musa, and adapted it for Moslem consumption. After all, in Moslem tradition, Mohammed himself was supposed to have been illiterate and the Koran was transmitted orally. It was quite a few centuries after the death of the Prophet of Islam (Al- Nābī) that the Koran was actually recorded and compiled into the Surats that we recognise as the Koran these days.

@@learnbahasaindonesia3361 To arrive at the most recently accepted version of the Koran, we have to see its development from the revelations received by the Prophet Mohammed between 610 to his death in 632 to the actual standardisation of the texts which led to the adoption of the Hafs Koran which has been most universally accepted in the form of the Cairo Koran that was first published in 1924. The earliest Koranic manuscript, with only partial semblance of the modern day Koran and by no means the full version, appears as the Sana'a Manuscript dated to around 670, forty years after Mohammed's death. There have been over 20 different Qira3at or Recitations over a periods of CENTURIES, the most influential period in the Koran's development being that of the 10th century, at least 300 years after Mohammed's death. The video contains a multitude of inaccurate information. There is no doubt that Mohammed existed, occasional attempts to deny it notwithstanding. Mohammed's death is normally placed in 632, but the possibility that it should be placed two or three years later cannot be completely excluded. The Muslim calendar was instituted after Mohammed's death, with a starting-point of his emigration (hijra) to Medina (then Yathrib) ten years earlier. Some Muslims, however, seem to have correlated this point of origin with the year which came to span 624-5 in the Gregorian calendar rather than the canonical year of 622. If such a revised date is accurate, the evidence of the Greek text would mean that Mohammed is the only founder of a world religion who is attested in a contemporary source. But in any case, this source gives us pretty irrefutable evidence that he was an historical figure. Moreover, an Armenian document probably written shortly after 661 identifies him by name and gives a recognisable account of his monotheist preaching.
Patricia Crone is professor of Islamic history at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. Her publications most relevant to this article include Meccan Trade and the Rise of Islam (Princeton University Press, 1987 [reprinted 2004]; "How did the quranic pagans make a living?" (Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies (68 / 2005); and "Quraysh and the Roman Army: Making Sense of the Qurashi Leathertrade" (Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, forthcoming [spring 2007]). Patricia Crone's main recent work is Medieval Islamic Political Thought (Edinburgh University Press, 2004); published in the United States as God's Rule: Government and Islam [Columbia University Press, 2004])
On the Islamic side, sources dating from the mid-8th century onwards preserve a document drawn up between Mohammed and the inhabitants of Yathrib, which there are good reasons to accept as broadly authentic; Mohammed is also mentioned by name, and identified as a messenger of God, four times in the Qur'an (on which more below).
True, on Arabic coins and inscriptions, and in papyri and other documentary evidence in the language, Mohammed only appears in the 680s, some fifty years after his death (whatever its exact date). This is the ground on which some, notably Yehuda D Nevo and Judith Koren, have questioned his existence. But few would accept the implied premise that history has to be reconstructed on the sole basis of documentary evidence (i.e. information which has not been handed down from one generation to the next, but rather been inscribed on stone or metal or dug up from the ground and thus preserved in its original form). The evidence that a prophet was active among the Arabs in the early decades of the 7th century, on the eve of the Arab conquest of the middle east, must be said to be exceptionally good.

Your presentation is all over the place my man.
First of all, at least use the modern academic body of works as you main anchor point.
Tisdall's work is biased as f*ck. He's writting explicitly in pro-Christian, anti-Islam polemic.
I mean he's as a prime example of Euro-centric orientalist as you can get.
Granted you used a lot of reliable modern scholars like Donner, Neuwirth, and Reynolds which I appreciated a lot.
(execpt Brubaker, that guy's also has explicitly pro-Christian and anti-Islam agenda)
Going to the main point, I think your conclusion of what the Quran is very "introductory" indeed.
Although it is now a book, Quran shouldn't be consider as a book at all.
It is a piece of poetry through and through. The name itself means "recitation" or "reading".
Speaking in purely historical pov, it never meant to be a book to read. It is a sermon or piece of religious poetry to be perform orally.
And also, almost all of the modern scholars you've quoting all agreed that it is Muhammad's work.
The thing about Zaid is based entirely on sirat and hadith literature, which we should agree isn't reliable as a historical evidence.
Quran is originally a work of Muhammad, little to no doubt about that.
Of course after Muhammd's death, it is possible, based on poetic scheme such as end-rhymn, that some surahs are edited.
(One clear example I would give is the surah Maryam (chapter 19) where the whole surah end with -iyya,
but some letter verses changed suddenly to -un, and then back to endding the surah in -iyya again.)
The problem arise when later muslims (and by extension you) needed to used the orally "recitation" as a basis of a religion.
But if you try to understand it through the lens of purely academic history, everything about the Quran madesense in its place and time.
I understand that your whole thing is to promote anti-religion attitude and atheism.
But there can be a lot of insight into how and why religion appear as it is even using secular humanist academic approach.
It can make you appreaciate the human aspect of religion.
If you did all that reading just to say "hey there's no god, just give it all up guys," or "it's all a lie, stop being silly," well I think that's a big waste of time.

    Islam The Beautiful Religion
    ( Be Just )
    Quran 5:8
'' O you who believe! stand out firmly for God, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the > HATRED OF OTHERS TO YOU < make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear God. For God is well-acquainted with all that ye do. ''

    Quran 4:90
''.........So if they withdraw from you and cease their hostility and offer you peace, in that case Allah has not granted you permission to fight against them.''
    Quran 8:61
''And if they seek peace, then you also seek it, and put your trust in God. He is the Hearer, the Knowledgeable.''

'' Ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against > YOURSELVES < or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for God can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily God is well-acquainted with all that ye do.''
( Who Are The Good Human Beings? )
    Quran 2.177
'' Righteousness is "NOT" that you turn your faces ( In Worship ) toward the east or the west but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth,> IN SPITE OF LOVE FOR IT,< to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for > freeing slaves < [and who] establishes prayer and gives charity; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. ''

[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah ." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. My explanation of above verse
Islam mean > submission < to God
( The above verse saying is that God will not accept a religion from the > MUSLIM < and the Non-Muslims but total > submission < to God.)
Question: How Can Muslim And the Non-Muslim > submit < to the God?
Answer: Be kind to other human beings and Do not lie, Do not steal, Do not cheat, Do not hurt others, Do not be prideful and Do the charity work.
( God Allow Muslims To Marry And Eat Food From the Christian And Jew And Vice Versa )
    Quran 5;5
''This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture ( Christian and Jew) is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture ( Christian and Jew) before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.''
    ( Kindness Toward Atheists / > APOSTATE < )
    Quran 60:8
'' As for such [ of the unbelievers ( atheist) ] as do not fight against you on account of [your] faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, > Allah < does not forbid you to show them > kindness < and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, Allah loves those who act equitably. "The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend."
( The Husband and The Wife Are > Protecting Friends < One Of Another )
    Quran 9:71
''And the believers, men and women, are > Protecting Friends < one of another; they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and they establish worship and they pay the poor-due, and they obey God and His messenger. As for these, God will have mercy on them. Lo! God is Mighty, Wise.''
    Quran16:97
“To whoever, male or female, does good deeds and has faith, We shall give a good life and reward them according to the best of their actions.
    Quran 30:21
    “And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you > affection and mercy { Love }
The Prophet Muhammad said, “The best among you is the best to his wife”
( Human Are One family )
    Quran 49:13
" O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)."
( All The Racist People Will Enter Hellfire )
    Quran 30:22
"And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge."
    My comment:
The > BASIC < message of God to the human is that '' YOU '' believe in God and be kind to other human beings / > animals < and in the > RETURNED < God will > REWARD < you with a new life in Paradise.
    * The Quran ONLY guides you how to become a good human being "Nothing Else".
    * You are a good human being or a bad human being that is YOUR choice.
    * No one can force you to become a good human being.
    * You MUST work HARD to become a good human being.
    * Why should ''YOU'' do good deeds and avoid bad deeds?
    * Do Good - it's for You. Do Bad - It's against you.
    * '' YOUR'' life is a TEST from God that you will choose to do either Good or Bad.
    * Find the excuse to help others and forgive others NOT the other way around.
    * '' YOUR '' final destination is either Hell or Heaven.
    * So work HARD toward choice of YOUR destination.
    Quran 17:7
'' If you do good, you will do so for your own good. And if you do evil, it will be to your own loss.''

@@thejokhadaar Islam is growing mostly through birthrate rather than direct evangelising. If you want to look at a religion that has expanded solely by proselytising and has dramatically grown from a tiny minority to a major world religion, I am afraid you would have to look at the Church of the Latter Day Saints or Mormons. Given the newness of the faith from its revelation to Joseph Smith to its relatively wide distribution now, we can say that it is the fastest growing creed in terms of sheer conversion, whereas Islam's distribution mostly throughout Africa and Asia, the world's two most populous continents, it isn't surprising that the Moslem population is growing. Islam is almost absent from the Americas and even in the US, which has the largest Moslem community, it isn't a huge percentage of the total population and remains significantly a minority. I would stop listening to Salafi Dawah enthusiasts and start looking at harder statistics and more reliable sociological evidence if I were you. Peace be with you, Brother. ✌

No? Look up the Birmingham Qur'an manuscript, it's been carbon dated to Muhammad's life time. And it's almost identical to the modern Quran Muslims use.

We have the Injeel and saying the Quran is perfectly preserved and denying The Gospels/ Good News by saying the Bible has been corrupted is wrong. @@RstesotTv I don't think you understood my question, I said to present me "one" verse which is factually wrong or has been put in by humans. The qurans that were burned might have had spelling mistakes that is why a project was started by the 3rd Caliph with Zaid Bin Thabit being the one who monitored the whole writing and checking of the making of a main contradiction, spelling mistake free quran. The rest of the books were burned because as mentioned above they could have had mistakes. and btw the complete quran that was being written this time was eing written by the people who all had memorised the quran from first to last and all were companions of the prophet who heard from him and learned from him. Again my friend, I ask you to provide me one, just one verse whichyou can prove with evidences that it was put into the Quran like the bible.
