- Hundreds of thousands of Turkish cats roam the metropolis of Istanbul freely. For thousands of years they’ve wandered in and out of people’s lives, becoming an essential part of the communities that make the city so rich. Claiming no owners, the cats of Istanbul live between two worlds, neither wild nor tame -and they bring joy and purpose to those people they choose to adopt. In Istanbul, cats are the mirrors to the people, allowing them to reflect on their lives in ways nothing else could.
Critics and internet cats agree - this cat documentary will charm its way into your heart and home as you fall in love with the cats in Istanbul. This film is a sophisticated take on your typical cat video that will both dazzle and educate.

imagine a city where everyone is a pet owner collectively... and all people have the ability (if they choose) to benefit from the positives of interacting with animals daily. So sweet.
God bless the Turkish people for giving food and love to all of these stray cats. In India most of the people hate cats. There are very few cat lovers like me.
Swapna Das :(
I wish all of Turkey was this kind. We adopted 2 cats from Avsallar. So many cats there are abused and injured by men and boys who torture them for fun. And the woman I know who feeds the cats gets abuse hurled at her every day.
It's a pretty much what happened with The worldwide..people see Cats as pests
@@teukufadel8293 Cats are pests. Cats are responsible for the extinction of thousands of rodent and bird species. I love cats, but it's environmentally catastrophic to allow stray cats to live unperturbed. If all of Turkey was like Istanbul, there probably wouldn't be any small birds or rodents anywhere in the country, which would be deadly for the ecosystem.

I was there in 2015, and I really want to go back. Unfortunately, since then, it has been a turmoil in the city and in Turkey in general.

Thanks to the cats, it is so beautiful. A cat passing by the butcher looks at me and says "meow" as if asking for my help, reminding me of my humanity in this tangible world. Sometimes I take a piece of liver and give it away. It's so special that he only notices me from the crowd. "I chose you!" it's like he says. They have found a way to see the good that we cannot see.
This was the purest fucking thing my eyes have ever been graced with and my life has improved because of it.

This was actually in movie theater?
We need more movies like this. Not just as documentaries, but also movies that inspire and encourage good, instead of the crap Hollywood is throwing at us nowadays. I would love to see more films and documentaries on animals, ancient traditions (such as culning, an ancient cattle call and way of communication), ancient folklore and nature. This looks like a beautiful film and I can't wait to see it! I'm not even a cat person. I'm a horse person, but I love all animals.
Hollywood is burning cats for satanic rituals.
❤❤
This movie is so good! I saw it in the theater in the US the day it came out. It was sold out and we all had to wait outside in the rain. I cried. It was amazing. I love cats, had six at one time. We named our littlest one Kedi after this film. Most of them are street cats too. >^..^<
You are amazing and beautiful just like the good souls in this movie. Thank you
Our newest cat from a shelter is also named Kedi, for the documentary. I visited Istanbul many years ago. I had my lunch every day in a cafeteria with outdoor seating where I visited for a conference. The first day, I gave the stray cats what I did not finish off my plate. The cafeteria worker motioned to me to come over. I thought I did something very wrong but he said, "Thank you." The next day, when I went through the line, I ordered extra food with meat and when I finished, I fed cats. The third and fourth days, I ordered extra food with meat and the cafeteria workers piled extra food on my plate, and I fed the cats again.
I lived and worked in Istanbul for two years and I am in love with this city , especially thanks to how many cats are living there. 0:57 - it's a cat living in the metro station, a have some awesome pictures of her, what a beautiful movie it should be!

My aunt lived there for almost 10 years in the 1990s. She tutored people in English in her apt. I found out about this doc from my mom who found out about it from her sister. I got it as a gift for my mom and just watched it. I haven't had a chance to ask my mom if anything in it is familiar. She visited her sister in Istanbul twice. She mentioned a huge outdoor market and I think it is the one in the film.

A Masterpiece. Cats. Cities. God. Life. Humanity. This new film covers it all in just 80 minutes.
Simply beautiful. I had the pleasure of enjoying this last night in the GFT in Glasgow. The cinema was surprisingly busy and at the end the audience actually applauded their appreciation. The gorgeous cats were the undoubted stars supported lovingly by the wonderful souls looking out for them. I would like to visit Istanbul before all the traditional streets disappear due to inevitable modernisation. I would definitely recommend Kedi. We loved it.
“If you can enjoy the presence of a cat, a bird, a flower… well what can i say? all the world will be yours.”
Friend of mine lived and taught there for two years recently, and had a particular cat who would look for her on her way to and from school every day. Quite remarkable.
When love art and magic came together this movie happened. What an incredibly beautiful and moving experience. You may love cats but you will have a new found respect and appreciation for these mysterious otherworldly survivors. The Turkish culture and people are something we can all learn from. Thank you for this beautiful film
"In his great Mercy, God gave us the cat, so that man can caress the tiger"
The people of Istanbul seem to have found a way to be able to live in the modern day, while keeping a tradition of their ancient past.
Stray cats are part of the community, working individuals, members of their neighborhoods, contributers to the character and in many levels, the wellbeing of the city and it's people.
This film was as beautiful love letter to that relationship and I wish other nations found a way to emmulate this wonderful dynamic.
Que hermososssss, que lindo es que los turcos aprecien y amen a estas hermosas criaturas que alegran nuestra vida!!!

If you're not a cat lover, you might find it boring but it's the best documentary I've ever seen 😻 "If a cat stands on your feet and stares at you, this is how life smiles to you" 🐈

Arin Gokdemir Well duh: it's a documentary about cats. Cat people, myself-included, would see just about anything if it involves cats!

Just saw kedi in my local film house and it was beautiful. Definitely buying on DVD when it comes out.
Yes, I WILL buy the Kedi DVD when it come out !
The documentary was great. Lovely cats and kind people. The documentary put a big smile on my face from the warmth the video emanated. A great way to spend 70 minutes on a quiet evening.
I saw this movie, it was the best documentary I've ever seen, if you like cats, SEE IT. 5 stars for cat lovers
I saw this movie this week so I would really recommend it. The soundtrack is so well selected and the sequences mingle Istanbul, its cats and people into a must-see documentary. Besides, you'll love the "protagonists" -I just adored Gamsiz, Duman and queen Psikopat 🐈!!!
If there was a sequel to this film I'd happily watch it again and again, just as I have watched this one over and over. I believe cats (and all other animals) are more evolved souls than us humans, they master unconditional love... They teach us so much and help us evolve in so many ways...
Can't wait. Cats are awesome.

I love how the people of Istanbul teasure and value their community cats. The cats are taken care of and fed by pretty much everybody. I do hope that there is some T-N-R program in place so there is enough resources and not an over-population that might suffer - like now during this horrible time.
The people there are wonderful - anyone who has compassion, especially for cats, are the best 💞
Actually, legally, local governments are responsible for spaying, neutering & vaccinating all street animals. But unfortunately they don't usually fulfill this legal obligation. Most of the weight is on regular folks' shoulders. People try to spay & neuter their community animals as much as they can but, it's not enough. I am very happy that we have this historical culture of having community animals and living together, that we don't have kill shelters, that we have many many people caring for animals as a part of their daily lives. But the rapid urban expansion and gentrification makes Istanbul an unlivable place for animals each and every day. We do our best but it's not enough.
@@cingilbort at least you do your best. That's what really matters. Every small act of kindness matters 💖

Just saw this docu on a pre-release in Amsterdam. Wonderful! Well made. Beautiful imagery. Interesting perspectives and insights from the locals in Istanbul coexisting with these street cats. Cats are awesome!
gerçekten çok değerli bir yapım, zaman geçtikçe adını daha çok duyacaksınız kedi filminin. istanbul ve kedi dünyanın en güzel ikilisi. çok özledim seni istanbul.
I tear up a bit every time I see this trailer. I love that quote about the difference between cats and dogs. Dogs are wonderful animals, of course. I'm not knocking man's best friend! But cats and dogs are on different wavelengths.
It's special, the way cats and humans interact. I love cats, I've got two of my own and several strays that come over everyday and night to eat GOOD catfood (they all seem to prefer the purina "gentle" food btw) and I let them take naps here. There's two boy cats that are always fighting so I have to let them crash here on rotation, the big fluffy pastel orange boy kitty is sleeping on my couch, he's so comfy looking.
All cats have distinct personalities, like dogs and humans do, but overall they're much more honest, or direct, and I think that's one reason they're my favorite of mankinds furry friends. They're these precious, soft, jewel-eyed creatures that knead and purr, while also possessing formidable fangs and claws. They're adorable, loving and silly. Also one of the worlds most perfect predators. They're the fuggin alpha and the omega!
Love this documentary.Love music, song, streets, cats and of course love you Turkey. The best country in the universe..The best place even been existed.

I know now it's on my bucket list to live in Istanbul.
the song is by vashti bunyan i never thought id hear one of her songs in mainstream media very happy!
The 49 that thumbs downed this movie either have a psychological issue with cats or haven't seen this film. It's remarkable and sweet the extent that people go through to see to the welfare of these cats. Having open vet tabs at every veterinarian hospital, cooking twenty pounds of chicken everyday, feeding kittens they don't even know. If you think that deserves a thumbs down I think you deserve a foot in your...you know where this is going. I volunteer at a shelter twice a week, but what these people do is much greater.
And if you do have an issue with cats, go to a shelter, meet one. They're not all mean, and usually if they are it's because a human mistreated them or they sense you don't respect them. Every cat is different, they are like us, where as dogs will slobber all over you whatever the case. Easy validation, not earned.
I am a cat lover. I am Turkish. I live in Istanbul. And this film is at best mediocre.
You can't understand how much this film sucks precisely because it was made by people alienated to their own culture in the name of westernization and the movie targets at the western gaze.
Not all Turkish people are as "zen" as the people depicted in this movie, sister. Grow the fuck up!
