- Speaking from the Munich Security Conference, Yale historian Anne Applebaum reflects on how the last year has transpired. “Nobody believed Ukraine would survive. Nobody believed Zelenskyy would still be President.” There’s been an “extraordinary show of solidarity” for the country, but the end of the war still seems far off. “This war will end when Russia has understood that it was a mistake,” Applebaum tells Ali Velshi. “That means Ukraine needs to take back its territory, it needs to convince Russia it can’t win - and we aren’t quite there.”

It may not depend on Putin recognising it was a mistake. It depends on those around him and his military leaders starting to accept it was a serious miscalculation. and the need to mitigate the ongoing damage to the stability of Russia. Some think that the longer the war goes on the greater the risk of Russia breaking up and internal forces taking advantage of government weakness for their own gain. Remember how unexpected was the collapse of the Soviet Union?
Russia is already breaking up. This is just the beginning of a long term pain for Russians to endure. Pretty hard to occupy a country when your on country is collapsing.

This is the most serious threat to peace and world security since WWII. It is also a war of aggression that involves horrendous war crimes, and strong evidence of genocide. By its actions the US is now earning the kind of respect and admiration that it has not seen since the period immediately after WWII. Sometimes it takes an existential threat for people to come to their senses and agree on what is important.

What I really appreciate about Anne is that, first, yes she did write some very good books on the crimes of the Soviet Union. Including work that depended on access to and interpretation of archives that most in the West were completely unaware of. But, perhaps more importantly, when the issues that her books and work touched upon ended up becoming more and more serious issues both here in the US and in the west more generally, rather than sweep them under the rug, she recognized them, called them out, and helped illuminate how the experience of countries in Eastern Europe can give us insights into how to oppose these authoritarian, anti-democratic and corrupt oligarchic tendencies here.
For decades it seemed that the US was in auto-pilot. Now we face a historic trial. We have the opportunity to re-adjust and set a new course. In these times, when many disappoint us, we really need examples such as her's of a principled stand. It is such a relief to be able to feel good about being a fan.

Do we forget the things Ukraine was doing before this war started? My family is from Ukraine and know there were wrong doings to regions in the country wanting to identify as Russian. Russian and Ukrainian people have a long history. I hope the best for both sides. It’s also unfortunate that the media has been so dishonest for so long so we get a lot of confusion and hate.
Everywhere in the world where borders touch, there will be people who feel more in common with the people across the border than their compatriot neighbours. But that's life. Borders can't move every bloody day. The USSR famously had a history of persuading Russians to relocate into the Soviet satellite states for this very reason.
