CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Axel (Eddie Murphy) gets an unpleasant welcome from Taggart (John Ashton).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
What's that wisecracking young black guy (Eddie Murphy) in that beat-up Chevy Nova doing in lily-white Beverly Hills? He's Axel Foley, a Detroit detective who's been sent on involuntary vacation because he refuses to drop his intention of avenging his friend's murder. Warned by Beverly Hills police chief Ronny Cox to stay out of trouble, Foley nonetheless dogs the trail of above-the-law Steven Berkoff, the British crime czar who was responsible for the murder of Foley's friend. With the help of sympathetic local cops Judge Reinhold and John Ashton and lady friend Lisa Eilbacher, Foley attempts to corner Berkoff in his mansion, which leads to a wild slapsticky shootout.

Dude was TWENTY THREE years old killing it! What a spectacularly talented individual Eddie Murphy.
Eddie Murphy was the greatest comedic talent of his era
I'm 35 and forget that this man was this talented at 23! That's mind boggling!
Johnny Appleseed I’d argue the greatest of any era.
He was 23? Looked more like 33
22 actually when they started production. Amazing poise and ability for someone so young. We all knew he would be funny, but I think everyone was a bit surprised he could handle the role with such maturity and drama.
Eddie Murphy is one of those film stars who ruled the silver screen during his peak. I can watch those 80s classics again and again.
MrGunboat78 Coming 2 America 😊
I always complain when SNL performers have like one season in their resume and then I realize they are better of doing movies and tv shows than being on SNL for a long time. Either way 1980s Eddie Murphy was the best
Back to back rated r classics
His movies brought so much happiness to my childhood!
Yes indeed, this and Coming To America were so great. I went to see Coming to America in the cinema at the time.
I had a friend named Axel who died at age 28 in an auto accident in 1989 and he loved this movie, especially seeing Eddie play a character who was his namesake.
Was his namesake or is his namesake?
The chemistry these three had was amazing - especially considering how different they all were. You had an SNL comic turned actor, a young guy best known for playing a teenager in Ridgemont High, and a veteran character actor who had mostly only been on television shows prior to this. But the combination turned out perfectly.
Ronny Cox had great chemistry with them too.
"Billy, we really need to talk."
John Ashton had a small part in the 1979 classic movie "Breaking Away"
It's something that seems to have been lost and goes over the head of movie directors these days. Oh i want this and this and that actor!. Yeah but can they work together? Do they have any actual chemistry?.
I still cant think of a better movie, with better actor chemistry than Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 between these 3 actors.
@@RMJ1984 Nick Nolte does a great job with Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours. Another good film.
"And you guys believe that. Who the fuck are you? Cops or doorman" lmao
We're more likely to believe an important local businessman than a foulmouthed jerk from out of town.
Thing is, that punch earned Taggart respect from Axel.
Always thought that too
Damn sure did. Squared him away REAL quick
His expression after that punch was like “Did he just punch me? That dude just punched me!”
i think foley earned some as well after not "pressing charges" lol
What always got to me was the fact that the two of them became very best friends later on. Remember, Taggert got misty eyed at the end when Foley gave him that towel.
Taggert and Foley=brothers
Such an amazing combo of actors. Classic, classic movie. They don't make them like this anymore :( .
when they going to make movies like this
when they going to make movies like this
u wanna start some static?
Hell they don't make classic movies like this anymore, the only way they make classic movies like this nowadays is remaking classic movies which I hate when they do that crap. Hollywood is definitely running out of stuff to do and doing all these remakes proves it. Hollywood has no imagination anymore.
Robert Kelley if you're creative make a movie than and let's kick the greedy lazy CEO's of the Hollywood studios and let's run it
Taggart looks like he is at least 55 years old in this movie when he was only 36 at that time, wow
looks like dr phil
@@yamato126 yeah 😂😂😂😂
Wow he was 36....You right he looks 55 LOL!
For real? Sheeeeeet
The Stress levels are strong in this one
The contrast in police cultures here is stark. Everybody in this movie is perfectly cast.
If they thought Axel was foul mouthed, can you imagine them working for the Lt in Detroit??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@jefflockaby702 inspector T !!!
"foul mouth? fuck you, man." hahahahahaha.... fuckin love eddie murphy
Jack James Facts Lmao
This was PRIME Eddie...
@@crysjumar1 Murphy in his classic PRIME, no doubt. No one funnier in 80's
when being politically incorrect wasn't' a big deal and people got over it.
Jesus Saves “it is also tradition that traditions must change” that quote explains it all
Love the sincerity of Taggart's apology after he punched Axel. You could tell he really felt remorse.(/sarcasm)
Remorse is not the issue. Submitting to authority is. Just like your dad... did you ever truly apologize to your brother for what you did to him. Me neither. But you can bet your dad was keep you humble until you changed.
I hate it when people demand apologies....it’s not gonna be sincere...when people demand them, I always ask do you want a sincere one? Or are you so conceited you jus wanna hear the words?
@gothatway09 ditto
I think he was sorry because he let his temper get the better of him.
@gothatway09 It was coerced and will lead to resentment on the part of the person forced to apologize.
Is crazy to think that in six more years this movie will be 40 years old
Yeah, and we can do nothing about it... ^ ^
thanks, makes me that age :'(
Ouch. you just hit me where I live.
Wow. Almost half a generation
That means in 6 years.... I'll be 40... god dam
It's so unfortunate that they don't make movies like this anymore.
Maybe not a police story but movies like Avengers and Expandables were good , intense but funny at the same time
Been saying the same for many years.
Really getting tired of the "Don't do it like they used to" idiotic comments. My God - you people are stupid.
@@hybridAbsol all the Marvel films have same plot a hero fight a bad guy loses then go back for a rematch and wins lol
@@hybridAbsol expandables lol. Made laugh
I like how evasive Foley is with the questions. Definitely knows how cops work.
despite the comedic tone of the film, I always felt that its best moments were the places where the film slows down, and works to establish its characters. moments as in this scene when Murphy is unwilling to rat out other cops, as well as the scene towards the beginning in the bar, provide good scene with strong performances behind them. I was quite impressed that James Russo was able to make a memorable character out of Mikey, with little screen time.
That scene in the hallway outside of Axel's still gives me the freeze of when something unexpected and horrifying occurs like Mikey's death.
Hey man. I think the same regarding First Blood, Rambo II, Rambo III and the Rocky movies.
So funny with the I’m on vacation when they know that’s bullshit.
I agree James Russo did an excellent job making you feel love for the character in the short time the audience see him. You're really backing the revenge story. I love the bar scene, shows the two detectives while by the book are still good enough cops to recognise when Foley is being serious and telling them to be ready.
@@G1NZOU I think dude meant when Axel and Mikey were at the bar, but you're right about that strip club scene.
Can’t believe I didn’t notice until now, Foley thought the BHPD was at best a joke, right up until Taggert went old school cop with him. That look he shot Taggert after getting hit wasn’t surprise at getting hit, it was that a BHPD actually had the nuts to do it. It was respect.
I like John Ashton's acting. I love his subtle acting skills, like how he shifts back and forth in the chair and raises his eye brows when Murphy replies with "foul mouth?". All very subtle but makes the character look genuine.
A few years later, John Ashton played on Law & Order SVU as the Chief of Detectives.
@@BrotherDerrick3X That's him? I never made the connection!
@@blockmasterscott first, John Schuck played the Chief of Detectives. Then John Ashton took over the role.
And by the end of the movie....the audience loved Taggart and Rosewood.....which is great writing
@@BrotherDerrick3X John was in a lot of tv shows back in the 70's early 80's , and play's. If you remember M*A*S*H , Starsky & Hutch, Barrera , Charlie's Angels , Dallas. I think his break out moment was the movie " Breaking Away " in the 70's. I've only met him a couple times at family reunion and such.
I might be wrong in thinking this, but to me this looks like two real men sizing each other up, and respecting each other and becoming not only good friends, but the best of friends.
Like for example Axel later tells Taggart that he had a good punch.
You can tell this was the 80s, cause now days he would have filed charges against him lol
True.
Would of been classed as a racial attack and Taggert would of lost everything
Not the case of movie, but corrupts cops gets a free pass, because cops dont want fill charges against them.
Taggard rules!
"Want to start some static?"
God I miss the 80's.
MeToo the Best Years
We all miss it!
Same here.
Yea it sucks Happy Freedom Day All !!!!!
Me too
I like the end of this scene when axl gets up slaps his stomach and says "good punch taggert."
Axel knew he provoked it.
Right, should've included that in the clip
... This is a great scene. They just don't do it like this anymore.
Jason Shoots and guess who raised them
They dont do anything right anymore
Eddie's performance in this scene proved that he knows not only how to act in a gut busting comedy but an action comedy as well as she brilliantly acted out his displeasure for being thrown out the window and having a face to face altercation with Taggart. Great movie along with the other 2 in this series!
did you do that on purpose?
And to think that Foley and Taggart became the best of buds! :)
Could tell Taggart wasn't a "by the book" cop, and he even said he joined the force same time as Bogomil(in 2). Taggart and Foley were destined to be buds. It was just a rough start here because Axel was still running on his anger over losing his best friend in Detroit. Can see it in his face here.
Love the strip club scene
blockmasterscott, not only that, but Taggart started to curse a lot more once he started hanging out with Foley more. 😆
They were cool but if I'm thinking "best of buds" I think Rosewood and Foley were closer.
Yea but in 2 it was a picture of Taggert and Foley fishing on Foley’s table.
The look of astonishment in Axel's face when he says we have six witnesses who say you broke in and started tearing up the place then jumped out the window🤣
I think this is a very good introduction of three good characters.
This is probably the best movie that Eddie Murphy made, and everything to hunt his friend's killers. Good action!
Eddie Murphy was #1 actor for a long while...
Loved his movies
I still love his movies.
When I was a kid we only owned about 5 VHS tapes and this was one of them. Got it from a thrift store. We had pizza night on Friday and we watched this one the most. I can practically quote it almost word for word. Sounds horrible but my family loved it. Good times.
Same here. Seen it so many times I can quote many scenes word for word. One of my fave is.... "Now listen to me my tough little friend. I don't know from under what stone you crawled or where you get these ridiculous ideas about me. But it seems obvious you haven't got the slightest ffing idea who you're dealing with. Now, my advise to you is crawl back to your little stone in Detroit before you get squashed"
Priceless times brother!
Dude, whoever you are, we are same sames homie 👻🤗❤️🍕🥳🙌💅🥰🥰🥰
Oh cool
This is actually probably the best scene in the movie. It establishes characters immediately and sets up Foley to be crass, but not out to get Taggert. These interactions were sorely missing from the 2nd one which I think would have made the movie better.
Who would have thought the audience would end up loving Taggart and Rosewood?....Judge Reinhold was the epitome of what u call a likeable dork in this film
"Well, you eat a lot of red meat."
Yo my man Taggart said we have six witnesses that say you broke in and started tearing up the place then jumped out the window!.. Lmao classic
Keron Windley ???
alex kanyima what don't you understand??...
Keron Windley tearing up the place and jumped out of the window
alex kanyima meaning you don't understand why Srgnt Taggart said that to Axel Foley?....
“Yo my man”
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. These three are such a classic duo!!
Trio... Dumbass
@@TheYorkMan LOL!!! Classic duo - ha hah. That came out funnier than an early scene in "Night Shift" where the dopey guy is alone in the morgue and is watching The Flinstones on TV and keeps laughing until he says, "That Barney Rubble. What an actor!"
You mean trio
taggart was not to be fucked with
I had to come back and watch this scene again. I never noticed before how both Foley and Taggart settle their differences like real men. It's quite possible that they were the only two in that entire office of that type. No wonder later they became like brothers.
Ronny Cox (Lt. Bogamill) doesn't play good guys very often, but he was excellent in this film.
He was a good guy in Deliverance, but unfortunately drowned.
Thought he did really great in the role also.
@G E T R E K T 905
"What did you think? - that you were an ordinary police officer? - your our product - and we can't very well have our products turning against us can we!"
@G E T R E K T 905 Robocop is great, as was Total Recall, but his Senator Kinsey from Stargate SG-1 is his best evil role ever. The kind of character you honestly worry might actually get his way.
@@samsonguy10k omg this is Kinsey? (Bogomil?) never connected them.

He literally did play a vampire in the 1995 movie "Vampire In Brooklyn".
Eddie Murphy at his best
Eddie Murphy is one of the funniest guys on the planet and I love this scene so much.
the whole cast was just spectacular bringing this movie to life and believable and i like it,my boy loved it,EDDIE MURPHY DESERVES TO BE RICH very talented
Eddie Murphy has got the acting chops to do literally anything. ... Seriously!!!
Eddie was 22 here and already a legend. How many actors that age can carry a movie as well as he did with BHC?
Leonardo dicaprio

Awesome scene to establish that the lieutenant is an honest guy
What a great movie!!!!! The cast the soundtrack and ofcourse Eddie hehehehe hahaha absolute classic❤️
This is one of the greatest films ever. Never. Gets. Old.
Also, I'm 46 so I'm typing this without glasses forgive me if this comment goes astray

How could Taggert by charged with assault? Foley instigated it by hitting Taggert first.
Good ass punch, I love the right Eddie wanted to throw. "after getting his breath back"
sube lildirty the scene does ahow the difference keeping things professional and personal he had no business punching him like that.....police need to the difference
Yeah, that sounded like a monster punch.
Guy Smiley but Axel deserve to be punched like that
It was a very entertaining movie. Even the small clips on youtube bring back pleasant memories of the first time I saw this movie.
Foley earned Taggert’s respect after he let it go with his boss.
The most stand up guy was sitting . . . That's ironic, yet powerful.
The first Beverly Hills Cop was the best hands down and one of my favorite movie👊
First film: Masterpiece.
Second film: Not as good as the first one, but it's still good.
Third film: Terrible.
DANILO VELJKOVIC I agree with you
pretty much but i wouldnt say 3 is terrible. just stale. i still watch it while im working on something else but mute it when the wonderworld song comes on
DANILO VELJKOVIC The third movie has zero redeeming qualities outside of Eddie.
3rd one is unwatchable. The amusement park scene is so fake.
The funny thing is I watched the 3rd one a bunch of times when I was a kid because my parents were always watching it for some reason. I didn't truly get the greatness of Beverly Hills Cop until I saw the first one way later.
To be fair.....
Axl put his hands on Taggart first
Eddie Murphy what a legend
Lt. was so impressed with the cops that Detroit produces he took a job as head of the OCP corporation in Detroit.
Do you always take a gun on vacation?
I don't know I never been on vacation before, LOL.
Danm... They don't make good stuff like this anymore. Such a classic.
1 of my favorite movies of all time EDDIE MURPHY IS THE BEST WHO DID IT
Even the edited for TV version of this movie is hilarious. That's one of the marks of a truly great movie.
I love the look on Taggert’s face and the way he rolls his eyes. 😹
Ronny Cox is great as a good guy, but he is amazing as a bad dude.
The start of a beautiful friendship
One of my favorite movie I never get tired of watching it.
love 80's movies..
The beginning of a good relationship
Taggert gave that man Axel a true gut check. The sound was so vicious!
the sound was hella! you could Axel expel air.
An early example of the awesomeness of Eddie Murphy.
1:46 I always loved how the camera panned from the left to the right at this part.
"Look, where I'm from, cops dont file charges against other cops...unless there is a promotional process going on." - Now that's more believable
Uh oh a real cop is here 👍🏽
Are they even good cops today. They do things that would have chaneges filed against them, but they stonewall average citizens from upholding their rights. Bunch of Gestapo/NKVD types. Murphy' character was the better man here..
He's on vacation!!!!
This movie is hilarious. Loved Eddie Murphy always. I watched it way back in the 90s and now reminiscing it again on Netflix now in 2024. I wish we can go back to the 80s & 90s when Hollywood really had superstar actors and movies with human stories far from the special FX and super heroes stuff.
Got to love his duet with Rick James in 1985 party all the time 💥
Best scene in the movie IMO.
Of course he brought his gun. The moment you become a police officer you can legally carry a gun in any state in the US, on or off duty, and most cops do.
You do know Cops have jurisdiction over certain places. But I don't that includes all over the US.
Cops have the right to carry a gun anywhere in the continental US. They don't have the power to arrest people everywhere, only Federal agents can do that. Carrying a weapon and arrest powers aren't the same thing.
Traye76 Oh, so basically when you're a cop, you can carry your weapon anywhere in the US, you just can't arrest people since you're out of jurisdiction, right?
mjbrock360 Right! That's why in the movies when a bank gets robbed, there's always a cop in line and he always goes for his gun and ends up getting shot. LOL.
Traye76 I see. But if that's the case, I don't understand why the BHPD took Axel's gun from him. After all he is a DPD officer.
THE CHEMISTRY AMONG THE THREE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!
"Nice punch you got there Taggert."
"Are you the man who wrecked the buffet at the Harold Club?"
Harrow Club to be precise
"Where I'm from, cops don't file charges against other cops"
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how we got to where we are in 2021.
Spoken by someone without the first damned clue. I suppose to you the no snitching policy on the streets which is why thousands of homicides go unsolved is a sign of honor to idiots like you.
Eddie Murphy has speaks his mind and he is totally wonderful and riveting prior to what he has been improving my life. Eddie Murphy has been better and he is going to become believable and tremendously blessed in all of his endeavors. God will always be there for you Eddie Murphy and I am looking forward to watching him in Coming 2 America on March 5.
Eddie Murphy was one of the best actors and characters on Saturday Night Live. Just see the one when Eddie played James Brown. That’s one of Eddie Murphy’s best. He didn’t need to do anything more on Saturday Night Live. That skit showed his true talent and range. That’s what got him into the movies. He didn’t even need to do a whole season or two or three seasons. That was the one right there. That one and when Eddie also did a skit of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood. Those were true Eddie Murphy Gems.
I remember talking about how comedians that need to drop F bombs resort to that because they don't have other options. But that line from Murphy delivered so effortlessly is one of the best delivered comedic lines in history. Written well, absolutely. It's a clever response to "foul mouthed". But without that delivery it doesn't work nearly as well.
Eddie owned the 80s. Nobody came close
That's a fact

Yes...he love tapped him on his jacket for God sakes....wth Axel!!
You know, in all these years I just now noticed that for the first time. Good catch.

As much as I love Foley, he crossed the line and I'm not surprised Taggart hit him. However, it's great they became friends later on even though they got off on the wrong foot.
Dominika Magdalena96 Why you say that? Not like you didn't see the previous scene.
It's called character development... Happens in most movies, if you take the time to watch....
